That was kinda cool - I can imagine all drill presses going this way eventually.

Yeah, but it's taking forever. Right now only Nova is doing it. Stupid anti-market, capitalist patents!!

Could you tell more about your tach I try to get more infos and photos or videos . My VFD will be 220 volt single phase to the VFD 3 phase and I like your set up but would like to see more details.Thank You.

The slow speed would be good for large holes in difficult materials such as stainless, etc. With a standard drill press you struggle to slow it down enough. It would be awesome if it still had its intermediate pulley.

I threw a automation direct .5hp motor and gs1 on a HB mini drill press, not really neccasary, but its badass

Great build! I just got the same vfd yesterday and getting ready to install on my drill press. How did you wire up the tach, start/stop switch and pot to the vfd? Do you have a schematic or pic? Again great video and build!

The tach is powered from the +24 volt supply on the VFD. The switches can be connected one of two ways. They can be set up to sense 24V when the switch is closed, or they can be set up to sense that the switch is grounded (common) when the switch is closed. I used the common, freeing up the 24V for the tach supply. The pot is connected to a separate 10V supply and wired to the 0-10V input terminal for the analog input. It is all detailed in the user manual. Not every drive is the same. Some do not have a separate power supply and do not have the capacity to run the tach, in which case a small external power supply, like an AC wall adapter or something can be used.

planning on doing the same thing on the new drillpress i ordered the guy selling me the VFD giving me a hard time though wants to know if it can run on 230 volt per phase (live in the netherlands , different voltages here) must think its an industrial motor or sumting

Thanks for the response Randy. I'm still a little confused about the start stop switch. If I use the common for switch, is that the only wire I run from VFD (wire from common on VFD) to switch and where after that? S1??

The manual should show connections. They are pretty simple. Common from drive to switches, one line back from the other side of each switch. But please read your manual as it may not have the same wiring options. They are all a little different.

Just wondering if you could lead me in the direction of the Tach & Pot you got off of eBay. Thanks in advance for your time. Looks great by the way!

Nice build! I did a similar install on my Porta Cable DP. I use this DP for metal work and just wanted to tell you that I use spiral taps and the DP power taps great! I do have some annoying vibration in my setup, I think I will try it without the "Jack Shaft" intermediate pulley shaft, like you have. Thanks for the inspiration!

I am in the process of refurbishing a 1967 Rockwell 17" and moving all the VFD related gear onto that machine. Built like a tank and runs silky smooth.

Yeah, I've been thinking of getting rid of my Porta Cable (Lowes bought) DP and going with something like a Clausing. You can't beat the old stuff! Wish I realized that a few years back!

So glad I found this video. I have about the same model Delta I am getting ready to do the same thing with. I just bought a motor and ready to order the switches and tach off Ebay. Did you use a 10k linear pot? Would love to be able to email you if I have any questions.

That really slow speed would work good with a tapping head.

I have a 0.75 kW drill press. Should I get a 0.75 kW VFD or go a size up and get a 1.5 kW drive?

How did you wire the tack to receive ~15 VDC power from the VFD?
@FixthisCD

+Chad Vrla I'm not sure which model he is using but there is usually a 12 vdc terminal on the vfd. just make sure the tach doesn't draw too much...my guess

thanks so much. is the high pitch ringing a side effect of the VFD? is that common with all of them?

Not sure I hear what you mean. At what time spot on the video do you hear it?VFD's can create hi frequency audible noise but I don't notice it on mine.

I'm wondering if you like tinkering better with the tools than actually using them? I'm not being critical, just an observation on watching all of your videos.
