Just built one of these kits and I want to say a big thanks for making this video. Watching this before building was invaluable (even though I still installed the volume control backwards). The quirks of the kit make it complicated but in the end it's a great little AM radio!

the plastic tag actually reads “东方红” in Chinese, which literally means the red color in the east, and it refers to Chairman Mao in the old days, and you actually placed it upside down :-p! sorry for my bad English!

宋健 Srsly, you call EVERYTHING down there after Chairman Mao, even locomotives for your railways are named ShaoShan after the village where the Chairman Mao was born. We understand you admire him, but it is a bit strange for us westerners. And the people on Taiwan (aka the Province of Taiwan) like to call everything after Jiang Jieshi aka Chiang Kai Shek

You’re welcome. It’s very frustrating if you don’t know about them. 👍❤️📻

Interesting looking kit project, I agree very "retro style" right down to the single rear retention screw.

It does look a lot like a 1960s era transistor radio (except that most of them were vertically oriented unlike this TecSun). Similar fast tuning rate as back then too. Station crowding on the upper end of the dial is mainly due to tuning capacitor design. They sold for about $6 in drug stores like Longs. WB6FBF

Hi and thanks for the video. I see there are two coils .. would this radio be able to receive LWs with a switch?

Good video. Start soldering in the middle and work your way out unless a more complicated piece would warrant starting there instead. Then you always have good access to the small parts.

I hope that you enjoy the build and have fun with it. Maybe you could make a video review of the radio too. I think its a fun project , I just wish the instructions could have been better. Thanks for the comment and good luck.

+TheRadiogeek I may do a video, will see I guess. Looks fun, I am used to building kits so your video helped out with what looks like some missing information etc in the manual so that will be a big help now that I know what to expect and I have spare parts if any are missing. Thanks again.

I built this kit, it does indeed work, however, if you are in Australia, you will find its' sensitivity to be lacking somewhat........I went over and over my building of it, and it ocurred to me, that this particular kit only has 2 IF gain stages before the detector. (So what I hear you say) Well, pretty much ALL other AM broadcast receivers in the world have 3 IF gain stages before the detector.....THIS MATTERS!!! So when I see people saying that this is a DX'ers dream......I kind of giggle......the Chinese HX108-2 absolutely FLOGS this thing on performance, and is 1/4 of the price. Buyer beware!

Although I have assembled several AM, and AM/FM solid state kits, the missing 10K resistors , the lack of step by step directions and breaking off the PCB board for the volume control sway me from purchasing. For the price point, Tecsun could have done a better job, IMHO-John in Texas

Yes I do think Tecsun could have done a better job. I did hear that the kit now has the two missing resistors included but no other improvements.
