Mine works fine on four penlight batteries 🔋. Black with leather case. They are heavy for their small size. 2 1/2 “ speaker 🔈 six transistors one thermistor one diode. High sensitivity.

I have one of these. And I found antennas on Amazon that plug into the headphone jack. Would those work on this? I'm totally new to radios so I'm sorry if it's a dumb question. Any info would be awesome! Thanks!
@m26a1pershing7Күн бұрын
The headphone jack should only be for a headphone output, the AM antenna is already inside it (that big metal bar on the top). In theory all you should need is a battery. Good luck!

The Ribbon Cable "connection" that controlled the display was GLUED into place, with all 3 of mine going BAD (like the majority of other owners), as the glued connection worked its way loose over a very short period of time. The company basically "Washed their Hands" of this HORRID DESIGN, and if you were out of the 1 year warranty period, you were left with an overpriced boat anchor! Some people have had limited success with heating that joint in order to re-melt the glue and thus reattach ribbon cable, with success rates varying. C. Crane should be ASHAMED to have "Signed Off" on such an inferior design, but then I'm sure it was CHEAP to produce. Had it been an $18 radio, vs a $180 one, then the "Cutting Corners" may have been understandable, but considering what people had to fork over for these, there was ZERO EXCUSE (imo) for this obvious manufacturing shortcut!!

@11:50 There is a timer circuit for the backlight to the right of the slot where the red case comes through. It has two transistors, two resistors, and one capacitor. What happens when you push the backlight, capacitor C8 charges quickly up to 9V. The resistors compose a voltage divider for the transistors and the voltage of C8 biases them to the on state. When you let go of the backlight button, the 9V charge starts dropping due to the small current of the resistors, and eventually drops to a point the transistors are off. I made modification to my backlight brightness by adding a 750 ohm resistor in series with one of the backlight leads, dropping current from outrageous 40+ mA to 6 mA, which produces plenty of readable light and saves on battery usage. Also, I wanted to extend my backlight "on" time, so I replaced the 0.2 uF capacitor "C8" with 2.0 uF. Now it lasts over 1 minute instead of less than 10 seconds. Can always be overridden by turning off and back on. That variable resistor adjusts volts.

Love vintage Sony radios and Walkmans. I just started looking for these on eBay and just bought the fm Walkman STF- 16W. So now I have the big for these vintage Sony radios and Walkmans, this model came into my eBay feed and one for only $5. Oh and the first one the SRF 16W is only a fm radio and I like tjos later model bc of it having am and fm, but I think these radios were just added am to sell more units back then and why you’re not getting very good am stations. Also, I love the yellow water proof line and had many back when they were new and seems Sony always when changing models and styles had a yellow version. In fact grey even made a rigged line and saw a rare small boombox from their rugged line. The only thing I don’t like about the yellow Sony line is that they cover the buttons in a softer water proof covers that wears out and over time eventually wears out. I wish they stuck with just the hard plastic bc it makes the radios look old and worn out. They did the same with their bathroom radios and used a softer plastic button covers that would wear out. What’s the yellow radio day? Are the yellow radio for safety is bc I know other companies started making yellow radios in the past. I just got from the thrift store a wind up emergency Aiwa radio on like new condition with a light and it’s blue. Anyway, thanks for making a video in this radio and I think I’m gonna grab that one one eBay before someone buys it.

Oh and back when a radio was everything when you were a kid. I was lucky to get this tip of the line Sanyo boombox with the detectable 2 mics and loved that unit. It had a light, different bands and I even plug a turntable and worked like a high end stereo and sounded great.

Just like many of your 'seasoned' readers, I used one of these rockets for late-night listening as a kid. Ground clipped to the bed spring, of course. From southern Oregon, it would pull in the big stations in San Francisco, Seattle, and Salt Lake City on a good night. I rigged the earphone cord with a paper clip and some washers to retract to the bedpost when I nodded off and the earpiece fell out. Not burning up 9-volt batteries kept me out of trouble with my folks.

I have this meter and was wonder. What do you set it on if you have 2200uF cap or 3300uF cap? Is 20mF alright to test these on? I got a reading of like 2.25 on a 2200uF cap set on 20mF.

I,ve had mine for a few years and bought it solely for listening to F.M. while walking (works great). I also useit to capture distant A.M. stations using the various bandwidths... .AAbatteries are readily available and inexpensive to replace.That,s my take on the 380. Thanks for video!

I got the same unit in 2019. The AM band is really good. Didn't care for the MP3 player, though. The Tecsun Q3 is far better. Tonight I forgot to turn it off because the display blanks out so I had to charge the battery. The display stays on if you're using the line in for a device speaker. Great choice of color as it is probably the natural color of the plastic and won't show light scratches too easily. Great video!

Thank you for the video. I had the same experience with an EBay seller who sold me a Channel Master 6515 that "works perfectly." Not the case at all but since it was in good cosmetic condition and came with the original leather case, presentation box and earphone I decided to keep it and not say anything.

Not saying it will but there is always a chance that these stations will be retired for good (the trend by transportation agencies these days is to retire these TIS stations). We should be ready to speak out against ending this service should it effect the Mackinac Bridge station. This service is iconic and NEEDS to stay.

Just so you know, the "crack" on the bottom side of the handle is not really crack. It is where the piece of leather ends meet. It appears on all the radios. You are correct in that many have a crack on the top side of the handle due to aged leather and stress from stretching often.
