Thanks for your review. I've bought a R-911 just for the sake of adding an analog radio to my collection. I've received it some time ago and as I am just back from an evening SW listening session at an elevated spot 30km south of Paris, I must say that I am blown away by this radio. It outperforms my D-219 and even my R-108 on weak signals in the low bands (60m, 49m). It produces a clearer, much more natural sound that makes it for easier listening. I'm starting to like this little radio a lot. Yes, it has some flaws. Build quality is so-so, on mine the volume roller isn't straight. The tuning wheel is tough and the tuning scale is not accurate. But it has this unique look and it's a bloody good radio for SW.

I bought the Kaito version for the American market. Got the blue one brand new in the box for 20 dollars. At Wal-Mart I found a beautiful padded case for 10 bucks which seems like it was made for it with a pocket for four batteries and a 12 foot wire aerial I made for it using alligator clips. For those who love to chase tropical band dx notice that this little gem covers that 60 meter band. I have thousands of dollars worth of ham and swl gear and the performance of this little beauty amazes me. Fm can be improved sometimes by collapsing the whip to two sections. You can erect a decent size outdoor shortwave aerial but it should be inductively coupled to the whip as a direct hookup will overload the front end and drive the little guy nuts. Wrap an insulated lead in wire around the whip about 12 turns. Reduce the turns one at a time until you get clean signals without overload. I just love this little gem along with my Tecsun pl380 when I want a smaller radio that I can throw into a pack while traveling. The analog readout isn't very accurate but that is normal for most of these little analog portables. Also, some. 49 meter images show up at the top end of this 60 meter band but that is normal for the circuit type. I am always surprised at the mw and shortwave performance of this little rascal! For 60 meter tropical band dxing get up a good random wire outside high and in the clear then use the insulated lead in write as I have described. Have fun. Oh yes, batteries last a long time due to the fact that it is a pure analog radio. Good luck!

I have the Kaito as well. Bought it from Amazon a few years ago. I take it camping. Nice radio but the volume knob's gone a little wonky.

Hi. Do you think R909 is better than R911 on MW? about sound, selectivity, sensibility? They are both variable capacitor radios, are not?

The R909 may be slightly better.

Personally I would pick up a v115 because i can do most everything, but if you want AM/SW listening, this is the radio to buy.

I have a couple of radios that had a 'universal' box with different colored radios and check boxes on the ends. The packer would check off the correct colored radio when they packed it.
