The authority of the state and the national government is contested, and states defend themselves through their representation in the Senate. Senators represent the state's interests, not the people's. They were originally elected by state legislatures. Confirmations should go through the house, but it's debatable if they even represent their constituents anymore. Their interest seems to be in whomever makes the most political contributions.
