Austin had great potential, but the main reason he became one of the biggest wrestling stars ever was Vince becoming the Mr McMahon character! Everyone was tuning in to see Austin kick his ass and cause mayhem!

Mr. Mcmahon certainly helped but that Austin 3:16 promo was fire, WWF had never seen anything like it, it was as consequential to wrestling as Hogan turning heel in WCW.

based on what though. If we're talking merchandise sales, you're probably right. But if we're talking about ratings, you're probably wrong. So by what metric are you comparing the two?

Hogan was the biggest draw at house shows and merchandise. Nobody was ever close to that. Rock and Austin did great on PPVs and ratings. But it's not like Hogan was not drawing at PPVs. WWF was always bigger than WCW. IT had a much better reach. WCW had a small reach before Hogan. Hogan took WCW to new heights. But WCW was still a smaller promotion than WWF. WWF was drawing pathetic because low card wrestlers like Bret and Shawn were main eventers. Despite having a reach they were flopping. Once both jobbers left the main event WWF got profitable.

@@Anthony-fw4tt Hogan Vs Savage drew nearly 8 lakh PPV buys in 1989. That's technically more money by inflation than any PPV later. And Wrestlemania 3 drawing maybe 70000 fans plus because of Hogan in 87. Even though WWF says 90000 plus was a huge feat for the 80s. A Canadian House show drawing 67000 fans. Bret Hart didn't even draw half of that in Canada for WWF or WCW. Even Rock, Austin or Cena could never draw that no without WWF being a brand as well as Wrestlemania. Hogan made wrestling huge like him or hate him.

Actually that's where you can debate that Austin had a higher peak than Hogan. In terms of TV and ppv ratings and merchandise he did. He was a huge draw star for house shows too and helped save the company from near bankruptcy to surpassing WCW and eventually even buying it. Hogan came to a very profitable WWF back in 1983. Very different circumstances. Now Hogan had a longer stay at the top because Austin's career was cut short to injury. Hogan also had an amazing run as Hollywood Hogan in WCW.

C'mon, Austin is not bigger than Hogan or The Rock. Those guys were on SNL and in top movies while wrestling. Austin was a man eventer for some of WWF's biggest years but then Hogan and The Rock got booked above him. I'd argue Cena is a bigger star than Austin. Austin was more OVER than those guys with hardcore WWF fans.

Austin sold more T-shirts than any other wrestler though and still does, I think he had the mainstream appeal to normal blue collar guys who didn’t even watch much wrestling that the other guys didn’t, he may have not made too movies but you saw him in way more TV commercials, reality shows, etc.

@@mikeg2491 You're right, he appealed to older guys. But Hogan appealed to kids and Rock appealed to men, women and kids. Austin is the biggest merch seller but a lot of that is because the skull shirt's design is greater than other shirts. He was a big draw but was didn't draw as much as Hogan, Cena or Rock who had way more WM main events.
