I remember watching this as a kid the night it aired and believing it was due to his knee injury because I was a mark little kid lol. I know Shawn's knee injury has been disputed during this time period, but I thought the real reason Shawn "lost his smile" and was going away during this period was because he was a drug addict and went to rehab. He did fail multiple drug tests and it was well documented that he had a pill problem during 96/97 but Vince put up with it because all his other stars like Hall and Nash jumped ship and went to WCW. Besides Bret, Shawn was the only superstar Vince had at the time who could carry the company on his back and thats why he put up with Shawns drug abuse and his prima donna antics.

Don't know if you know this - Bret had already completed all of his dates for the year (number of televised and PPV matches he must appear in for the calendar year) by the time the Survivor Series had happened. Bret didn't legally have to even appear, but he agreed to. So yep, Bret could of just handed the title over or forefeit the title like shawn did every time he didnt want to lose.

I've always ran on the assumption that Michaels "losing his smile" was McMahon covering up Michaels failing a drug test, in order for he, and his golden boy (at that time) to save face, while Michaels went to rehab. But, that's just me.

Shawn once told Brett that he would never put him over, which led to the Montreal Screw job. Also, Shawn always seemed to find a way to weasel his way out of doing what he didn't want to do with the exception on having to drop the WWE Championship to Stone Cold Steve Austin, and the only reason why he complied is because of the Undertaker. Then afterword's he took off for 4 years due to a supposed back injury. But, with that said, in all fairness it was a miserable time for the WWE and there may have been some truth behind him "Loosing his Smile" Also I read his book a few years ago and Shawn admitted that he was not the easiest person to deal with as he referred to himself as a bear. And he also said that he had every intention of dropping the strap to Stone Cold although he said otherwise in the locker room at the time. To me he seems like a complicated man, but I'm glad he's in a better place and found the Lord.

Regardless of any situation with the Hulk deal, he was unprofessional in the ring, that's the issue. Business is one thing behind the scenes, that can be dealt with however wants, he choose to make a mockery of the match with his way overselling. Doesn't matter what was to be, changed, altered, etc. you deal with Vince and make your decisions before going to perform. Thats the pr+ck side coming out since didn't get his way. Shawn didn't go to Saudi to try to learn, or talk, or anything to do with his religion, it was for money, the end. He was asked many times to return for a match and said no, I am done, his absolute right, till way overpaying came from Saudi, and hes in. That's totally fine, again his absolute right if wants to make that choice. I mainly mentioned to make a point that he, like mass majority who follows a religion, is a hypocrite, just is. There not both wrong, what you see in the ring is what matters, whatever happens behind the scenes is irrelevant to the job to be done once out from the curtain. Hulk could have said screw your plans, i don't care. Fine, then Shawn can say I don't want to do the match, or what have you. You don't get to be mad and say fine, then be a comedian to make the match look like a complete joke. Shawn is in the wrong, had Hulk went out there and just flexed and no sold everything and cupped his ear all nite ,id say same thing about him. ...Pretty sure I said Shawn is flawed like all humans, and just my opinions, not facts...
