I am a keyboardist now. I bought this book in the ‘80s, I think. I have been a guitarist for about 50 years. It has been seminal in my thinking about jazz and all harmony, thank you for reminding me about this great source. Every day I learn something new, the main thing is to persevere. Keep up the great work. Whatever happened to Ted Greene?

Thank you so much, @bobgobknob, for sharing your journey! It's amazing to hear how Ted Greene's work has influenced your musical thinking across instruments. You’re absolutely right - learning is a lifelong process, and perseverance is key. Ted passed away in 2005, but his legacy continues to inspire so many musicians, myself included. I’m honored to be a small part of helping others rediscover his incredible teachings. Keep up your own great work, and happy picking!🎸

Thanks for bringing something new to the plate Looking forward to more of Ted Green‘s excerpts. I don’t plan on learning 1000 new chords, but to understand melody movement will be helpful. Even if a few new ideas emerge for me, just means I have a bigger playground. I have lived with Chord Chemistry since the 1990s. It was suggested by a certain Mr Tommy Emmanuel. So glad I met Mr Greene through his book. Voice leading was the breakthrough to me - because music needs melody or it is meaningless to most listeners. So substitutions become truly life-changing if YOU COMPOSE, not simply COPY others. Ted explains himself if I do the repetitive work of playing through his wisdom of examples. Derive your own method, and keep writing for the guitar, your way. Then you become a musician. Johnny Smith and George Van Eps are other massively brilliant players to learn from. (I know, there are many great players).

@SophiaFakeVirus-ro8cc That’s awesome that Tommy Emmanuel recommended it! 🎸 Don’t worry if it feels impenetrable at first-it’s a challenging book, but we’re breaking it down step by step together. Stick with it, and I promise it’ll start to click. You’ve got this! 🙌 Keep that book off the shelf, and let’s dive in!

I think the first few chapters of Mick Goodricks chord almanacs are a better starting point.

@javierrodriguez4218 That's a great perspective! Mick Goodrick's approach is indeed invaluable, blending seriousness with a touch of humor. His chord almanacs offer a unique foundation for understanding harmony. I appreciate your insights-perhaps we’ll explore some of his concepts in a future video!

Anyone have advice for learning how to read sheet music for the guitar? Book or video recs?
@JasonCareyGuitar9 күн бұрын
@willpulier Thanks for the great question! Learning how to read sheet music for guitar can be a game changer. There are a few classic books like Modern Method for Guitar by William Leavitt that are great for getting started, and some Mel Bay publications cover it too. I'm also considering starting a new video series on the basics of reading music for guitar - would that be something you'd be interested in? Stay tuned, and in the meantime, feel free to check out my current lessons for tips that can help with sight-reading! Happy Picking, Jason

Greene's notation uses "7 with a line" to signify major tonality, which is pretty awful. So at 2:18, the notes D Gb Bb F are intervals of M7 m3 p5 M2 with respect to an (implied) Eb root. Choosing this sequence, in this key, with these voicings, as the example for his first page seems to be an act of sheer contempt.

@blipblap614 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I understand that Greene's notation can be challenging for some. It certainly has its quirks, and it's great to hear how you're breaking down those intervals with us! As for the choice of examples, it's interesting to consider how different perspectives can influence our interpretations. I'm here to explore this journey together and appreciate your insights!

Way,WAY over my head! I'll just stick to the "cowboy" chords, and using the caged system. I wonder how The Beatles and other bands from back in the day ever managed without this. Thanks anywho, but it's a hard pass for me. Cheers!:)

I totally get it, cowboy chords are the heart and soul of so many great songs! And let me tell you, I absolutely love diving into some flatpicking bluegrass with those same chords. It's amazing how much you can do with just the basics. The Beatles and bands back in the day made magic with simplicity, and there's definitely no wrong path. Appreciate your comment, and thanks for checking it out-cheers! 🎸 🤠

It was good when they came out, but it is anachronistic now.

@ZRJZZZZZ I appreciate your perspective! While some concepts may feel anachronistic, I believe that timeless principles of music theory can still inspire creativity today. It’s fascinating how classic ideas can evolve and find new relevance. What aspects do you think resonate the most with modern players?

Rhythm, tempo, pitch, tuning, dynamics, tone production if they can hear when they can hear. It’s what I struggle with.
@JasonCareyGuitar17 сағат бұрын
@@ZRJZZZZZ You’ve hit on something really deep here! What you’re describing-rhythm, tempo, pitch, dynamics-is all part of the same interconnected web. The ancient Greeks saw music as a study of time, space, and number, a reflection of the harmony of the universe. It’s interdisciplinary in the purest sense, and that's why we feel it so strongly when we play. Hands-on learning, especially across cultures and styles, helps us understand those principles not just intellectually but through real-world experience. Keep pushing through-it’s all part of that universal journey of hearing, feeling, and discovering the world through sound! Thanks for being here and happy picking! - Jason

Those are with physics and sound in the nearest called the dynamics of sound which I have been studying since I was 12 or 14. I can play any guitar in any genres, except gypsy jazz, with great competence.

@@JasonCareyGuitar It starts off with: "here is the Major scale, and here are the open string names", then jumps to " play 2 different notes in a chord with one finger, one with with the lower joint, and with the finger tip" 😂. I think it's the ebook version of the paperback on sheetmusic website.
