So glad you are doing this. Ted was my second guitar teacher. All I can say is he tolerated me as I learned things like "On A Clear Day" with chord melodies. Ted did teach me "Little Wing", for which I am forever grateful.

Wow, that’s incredible, Gary! What an amazing experience to have had Ted Greene as a teacher-especially for songs like "On A Clear Day" and "Little Wing." Those are such timeless pieces, and Ted’s chord melodies must have really brought them to life. I’m honored to be sharing his teachings here, and I’m so glad you’re finding value in this series. “The key word here is patience”. That’s so true. You play these exercises over and over and you’ll start to take new turns off the trail, and realize Ted wanted us to find our own trail the whole time. So cool that his materials are working their way across the world, as he was one of a kind and his holistic melodic approach is a beautiful thing.

@scrapkingfilms You captured it perfectly-patience is everything with Ted’s work. It’s like he mapped out paths for us to walk, knowing we’d find our own twists and turns along the way. His holistic approach truly does invite us to explore and make it our own, and it’s inspiring to see how his legacy is touching players everywhere. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful reflection, and I'm glad to have you along for this journey!

Thanks for your comment, Vincent! 🙏 You're absolutely right-some of these shapes can be tricky at first. Don’t worry! If they feel physically challenging, try simplifying them or focusing on just a few notes from the chord until they feel more comfortable. Small steps lead to big progress! 💪 Also, I’d love for you to join us at 7:30 a.m. EST for my free Guitar Warm-Up Livestream happening five days a week for the next year. Thanks for the video. I took lessons from Ted at Ernie Ball in tarzana when I was 13-15 starting in 1967. He looked exactly like he does on the cover of Chord Chemistry and played the same tele. I was too young to really benefit to the fullest and ended up going the sex,drugs and rock n roll route. When I came back to the guitar in my 20s I was amazed at how much I remembered from my time with Ted. I was also lucky with my first teacher, Duke Miller, whose studio became Valley Arts. Many L.A. session guys studied with Duke Miller including Lee Ritenour who was in my first band, a trio playing Kingston Trio and Pete Seeger folk songs. I still play every day.

Wow, what an incredible history you have with Ted! It’s amazing how those early lessons with a teacher like him can stick with you, even after years away from the guitar. Sounds like you were surrounded by some serious talent early on too-Duke Miller and Lee Ritenour? That’s truly remarkable! I really appreciate you sharing your story, and it’s great to hear you’re still playing every day. That’s one of the best things about the guitar-there’s always more to learn, and it’s never too late to pick it back up. Thanks for being here and following along with the series!

I found this book very helpful as an essential reference today that I go back to. Because as you read I think I understand much more than before than when I read the intro to myself which I have done 3 times before. There are ahah moments when you grasp things and grasp why the book is laid out in its particular fashion so thanks for reading the table of contents. Learning the fret board coming up next has a profound statement that I could not avoid and many guitarists do and that is to simply learn the names of the notes everywhere on the fret board. That was key for my own jump and major progress in playing music.

I have lived with Chord Chemistry since the 1990s. It was suggested by a certain Mr Tommy Emmanuel. So glad I met Mr Greene through his book. Voice leading was the breakthrough to me - because music needs melody or it is meaningless to most listeners. So substitutions become truly life-changing if YOU COMPOSE, not simply COPY others. Ted explains himself if I do the repetitive work of playing through his wisdom of examples. Derive your own method, and keep writing for the guitar, your way. Then you become a musician. Johnny Smith and George Van Eps are other massively brilliant players to learn from. (I know, there are many great players).

@@JasonCareyGuitar Thanks so much for your reply, Jason. I know it might sound like I'm making excuses, but I'm 68 years old and have shortish fingers and a bit of arthritis, so some of those stretches can really hurt. Maybe if I'd started working on such fingerings 40 years ago.... haha 🙂

I totally get that some of those stretches can be tough, especially with shorter fingers and arthritis, but remember: there are always ways to work around them and find more comfortable voicings. I'm kinda excited for this. I bought Chord Chemistry a few years ago and it remained unopened beyond a quick leaf through - until now that is. To say that this book feels intimidating is an understatement, so I am grateful to see someone walk through it in digestable chunks. You have a sub, sir. Looking forward to what you produce. edit - you seem to be interested in what version - mine is the Alfred Music reprint (prob the most recent printing) of the 'Dale Zdenek Publications' version - runs 109 pages and appears to look like a photocopy of the original.

Even if a few new ideas emerge for me, just means I have a bigger playground. It reminds me of what Uncle Larry said once “you only need one note from a chord, in a chord progression to be ok” I might have butchered it, but I got the drift. Thanks Jason

I mean, it kinda makes guitar playing rocket science instead of just learning tunes and interiorize the sound of the chords. I find it easier to think there's just minor, major, dominant and diminished chords, now the extensions are gradually added as your ear and fingers get used to it.

@danielmendez3098 That’s a really interesting perspective, and I completely get where you’re coming from! Ted Greene’s approach can definitely feel like "rocket science" at first glance, especially with how deeply he dives into theory and voicings. But I think that’s one of the beautiful things about Chord Chemistry-it offers a treasure trove of ideas for when you're ready to explore them, even if it’s bit by bit. Your method of focusing on the core chord types and letting the extensions come naturally as your ear and fingers adapt is a fantastic approach too! I like how when you play a note in a key(interval) the note kind of implies the chord. For instance, If I'm playing in C, and play a 7th.. that one note by itself almost kind of sounds like it's diatonic chord. So the Bmin7b5 is kind of implied just by playing the B.. it will sound like it needs to resolve. Different chords have different stability. It's all about tension and resolution. Music that is. Inversions are cool but I agree with Ted. It's not nearly as important to be able to play every inversion as it is to know the chords in a key and their function. Like your chord might have a note in it that doesn't belong there but it belongs in the chord that you're gonna play next so when you play that next chord it all makes sense. Congratulations. You made somebody go " what the hell is that" and then go "oooohhhh I see what you did there". That's called tension and resolution. You just made music. The vii° chord sounds terrible but it man when you hit the I chord you are home safe. Cadences. If you know cadences you can make music. The V Dominant to I chord the perfect cadence. The IV to I chord is a plagal cadence.. not as strong of a resolution as the perfect cadence. Which isn't as strong of a resolution as the vii° to I chord.. because the 7 is all dissonance. The 1 has none. It's safe. It's home. You can't really play a wrong chord if you know how to resolve it
@JasonCareyGuitar
@JasonCareyGuitar 3 ай бұрын
@JawnCoffee I absolutely love your insights on tension and resolution! 🎶 You're right-understanding how notes imply chords and how they function within a key is key to making music. They used to call this book "Chord Catastrophe" back in tha day !

@g-love6507 Haha, yes! Mr. Greene himself had a sense of humor about it and often called it 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲. Despite the nickname, it's incredible how much knowledge is packed in there. Thanks for bringing up the good ol' days!

The "kinda interesting" chord at 2:45 (D, G♭, B♭, F) is exactly the voicing of the second chord in "Stairway to Heaven" but it's in E♭ minor instead of A minor. Did he do that on purpose?

@mbmillermo Great catch! 🎸 It's funny how the first chords in the book parallel "Stairway to Heaven." Whether it was intentional or not, it’s a fantastic way to start exploring voice leading. The chord shapes really pull you in! Thanks for pointing that out - always fun to make those connections!
