Single Note Soloing Vol. 2. Is also a must too. Completed them both. The Altered Dom material is vital in these books.

Vol.2 is just out of control!

These are great books by Ted Greene. I have both. Another couple of books along this topic that are worth checking out are Jazz Improvisation For Guitar by Garrison Fewell. There's also 2 volumes; A Melodic Approach, and A Harmonic Approach. The 2nd one is not about chords but rather how to improvise single note lines with an emphasis on using harmonic ideas such diatonic substitutions and upper structure triads, 7th chords arpeggios and a whole lot more. Excellent books imho. You might consider reviewing them if you haven't already.

great book! it makes me feel very anxious though whenever I see it though, so much stuff, which isn't a bad thing, its just hard to know where to start!

What book would you recommend as a substitute to "Chord Chemistry"?
@FlaxeMusic5 жыл бұрын
There is none. Chord Chemistry is essentially the most complete dictionary of chords, it's not a method.

Ted Greene is the Yoda of guitar.

I've always wanted to sit and transcribe his counterpoint videos, but as a rule I don't do things for leisure that have (to my knowledge) already been done. Those videos are incredible.
@Milankoful8 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about his "baroque" videos on youtube, there are transcriptions by Will Kriski on some of that, and it's on Ted Greene's site. So you don't have to spend a lot of time transcribing all videos.

Ted should be studied by absolutely anyone who wants to be a modern guitar player. All his books are must haves.

Funny, I really liked Chord Chemistry. In terms of other books since, you might be right, but I haven't come across one like it. I learned a lot from the section at the back where he goes through the blues from its simplest to its most complex forms. And conversely, I never cared much for Single-Note Soloing: I prefer to get a single concept and permutate it myself rather than play though countless examples, unless you're talking about something like Slonimsky's Thesaurus. Which is why I think The Advancing Guitarist is probably the best book ever on the subject. The seeds that book planted have kept me going for years.

these are great vids, Levi..thanks.. I did 4 private lessons with Ted Greene during my year at GIT.. the Modern chord voicing book is the real "sleeper" of the series....
@LeviClay8 жыл бұрын
I can't decide if you mean sleeper as in, it sends you to sleep, or like a sleeper agent, in that it contains many secrets very few people ever find out about haha
@slugmojo8 жыл бұрын
lol... it's always taken a 'back seat' to Chord Chemistry... and it really has about 500,000 great ideas as far as chord melody goes.. just a FANTASTIC BOOK that you should also do a vid for.. ;)

I have it, I've read it, but I've not really studied the material in it because I find Ted's chord diagrams really hard to work with.

Levi Clay I remember as a teenager my classical teacher 'gave' me his copy of Chord Chemistry, I guess to placate my desire for 'some' modern influences. "If you're done with this in less than two years you'll be glossing over stuff and you'll never 'get it.' " He advised me. Mixing in reading it at school, bus etc & slow, patient study with the instrument in hand (never neglecting my classical studies - Oh no, not allowed !!) was the only way that it eventually "clicked' & all that work paid off. This isn't a pick it up & grab a bite book but rather a great work by a master pedagogue/player that just can't be rushed, no matter how many musical miles you've travelled. One really has to take a bite, chew, digest - really understanding that bite before moving on. I'm in my fifties now & I've still got that tattered, dog eared, godsend that worked for me. I still use it with my students but only the serious, long term 'stayers'. Everyone's different & what works for one person won't for another.

Cool will have to check this book out. What do you think of Ted Greene' Modern chord Progressions book Levi?
@LeviClay8 жыл бұрын
si dog I have it, and have read a small part of it, but I find Teds chord diagrams pretty hard to work from if I'm honest, so I've not put enough time into it to act like an expert on it.
@dimevh848 жыл бұрын
cool, thanks for responding Levi, sorry for the questions but whats your personal favourite chord book? .
@LeviClay8 жыл бұрын
si dog don't be silly! If I didn't want questions, I'm in the wrong business haha. In all honesty, I've never used a good chord book, I used what I learned about theory and the fretboard to come up with my own comprehensive system for chords (I know it sounds like I'm selling haha) and that's the 4 part LickLibrary series, the chord encyclopaedia. I'm not saying there aren't any good ones (I actually enjoyed a lot of the ideas presented in Vic Juris's mel bay book) - I've just never got enough of them to have a strong opinion.

Four-part series? I have Volumes 1 and 2, and I thought that there was only one more to come. Will there now be two more to complete the series?
@LeviClay8 жыл бұрын
I filmed part 3, but it was over 3 hours long so we couldn't fit it on a DVD so it got split into two Part 3 - extended harmony Part 4 - altered harmony and advanced concepts

How about: Joe Pass Guitar Chords; Joe Pass Guitar Solos; Joe Pass Chord Solos; Joe Pass Guitar Style.
@TheCampbellcomic5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the version. Carol Kaye rewrote the books with more 'authentic' Joe Pass fingerings used on the various phrases. The original has some Joe elements, but listening to his lectures you notice how much writing was put in from the collaborating writer.

I remember an article about jazz books for guitar written by britsh jazz guitarist Ivor Mairants for Guitarist magazine in the late 80's where he mentioned that only about 20 to 30 percent of the musical lines presented in those soloing books are any good.The rest are really filler for the book.This then raises the question of which musical line examples are "good" and those that aren't.Well if you aren't sure then just use your own ears to decide what you find good to listen too.
@LeviClay5 жыл бұрын
bingo - stating that as fact means the writer didn't get the rest. He doesn't like some of the lines... cool... I bet there are people who love all the lines he hates, and hates all the ones he loves.

Which chord books would you recommend over Ted's Chord Chemistry?
@LeviClay7 жыл бұрын
I sound like I'm pushing my own stuff here, but my Licklibrary chord encyclopedia is where I point people. I've read a LOT of books, but I can honestly say that I never found a chord book that grabbed me, and when I got to the point where I had a good understanding and started organising and applying it all, I stopped looking.
