Inverting The Pryarmid was a famous book about the revolution of tactics in soccer from a defensive strategy to an attacking strategy so,the title is a reference to this but applying it to success. This is why Americans need to learn about soccer because it is a far better sport than those crap American sports.

Whenever I see this episode I just look at Nate. Everything he rolls his eyes at. When he confronts Ted I remember that he’s confusing Ted with his dad. He doesn’t see Teds panic attack as a mental thing but as a weakness. Ted however is understandable in not confronting Nate - he knows Nate is hurting and he understands.

And I think Ted eventually recognizes that this stems from that issue. Nate says that Ted should be home, emphasizing "with his son," that is where he belongs. Right after that line they shows Ted's expression and for a brief moment it hardens as if to say "how dare you" as an almost reflexive response, but then immediately softens as he realizes this isn't really about him.

One interesting things about Nate saying that Ted abandoned him is before this episode, that last time we see Nate and Ted have a personal/one-on-one conversation is Season 1 Episode 7 when Ted yells at Nate while he is trying to sign the divorce papers and then apologizes. I think this along with Ted hiring Roy made Nate feel abandoned. In addition, Nate sees Ted as a father-figure so Nate can say and project all of the issues he has with his father because a lot of the issues he says he has with Ted are actually issues he has with his father..

Nate has had moments of being domineering and even outright nasty even back in Season 1. His harsh critique of the team pushed them to win in Liverpool, so he thinks that kind of talk is acceptable. He regularly was harsh to William and insulted Colin’s skills and position on the team just because he teased him a bit. Combining that with his insecurities, desire to be respected, and growing resentment of always being associated with Ted instead of being acknowledged for his merits have led him towards this path. I don’t know what Rupert said to him at the funeral, but it definitely lent a hand as well.
@laurelf.2057
@laurelf.2057 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think the roast in Liverpool should be held against him. He never intended to say it to them, he only did because Ted agreed with him about all of it and said he should do it. If Nate is getting blame for that then Ted should be blamed too. Also, saying Nate was "teased a bit" by Colin is WILDLY underselling it. Nate was physically and verbally harassed for MONTHS by Colin, Isaac, and Jamie and only got a respite from it because of Ted's intervention leading to Roy giving Colin a concussion. There is no planet where that behavior should be considered "teased a bit." Nate being rude to him once - for which he apologized - is far less than what Colin deserved to be honest.
@efrainlagunas
@efrainlagunas Жыл бұрын
@@laurelf.2057 sorry, disagree with some parts of what you wrote. First, your point on the harsh critique during the Liverpool game is wrong on twofold: 1) the og comment didn't say it as blame or to be held against him, but more as an unfortunate/wrong lesson Nate took from that 2) it was still Nate who wrote it, even if he never intended to say it out loud himself, it was still his intention to have it spoken out loud. Personally, I believe in that moment Nate did understand what was the takeaway from it, but as he grew more spiteful and insecure, it warped his perception and he took the wrong lessons from it as that now is what fits his worldview. My memory of Nate being rude to Collin is that he did it far more than just once, but he only apologized for the one that got him trouble. It's understandable Nate would get revenge because Collin did bully him harshly and like you said, it should not be tolerated nor be minimized.

@@efrainlagunas Thought crimes do not exist. Nate cannot be criticized for something he thought but never intended to actually say. Should you be criticized for having an ill thought about someone if you don’t actually say it? And again, Ted AGREED with Nate and told him to say it. There is no evidence Nate was continuously mean to Colin, and certainly not to a fraction of the degree that Colin was to Nate.

@@laurelf.2057 Sorry, I'm not arguing with someone who manipulates and ignores my words to fit their agenda. For anybody else, no one here, atm, said that was wrong of him to do. Just that Nate took the wrong lesson there. Also, NO, that wasn't a thought. He wrote it down for Ted to say it outloud, BUT that's beside the point because it wasn't wrong. No one was at fault there. It's just a shame Nate may have twisted what that special moment was now that he's in a bad place mentally.
@laurelf.2057
@laurelf.2057 Жыл бұрын
@@efrainlagunas Sure seemed like blame to me. Regardless, I don’t see where he took some horrible lesson from it. He’s (unfairly) mean to Will for other reasons - the team welcomes Will immediately, whereas they treated him like shit, and Nate doesn’t see that it’s because the team has improved not because of anything Will did differently. He’s rude to Colin - ONCE - because Colin tormented him. Should he, as a coach? No. But it’s completely understandable and I don’t fault him for it. If he were berating and personally attacking everyone, that might be one thing, but he doesn’t. ETA: Also, if we’re playing the unethical coaches game, what about Roy? He refused to coach Jamie for six weeks because he was petty and had the power to do so - and would have gone on doing that if Jamie and finally Ted hadn’t forced the conversation - refused to listen to him for even longer than that, and even all through season 3 continued to be dismissive and antagonistic.

Nate’s character arc in this season might feel a little clunky or forced but if you go back and watch knowing how Nate feels, you will see signs of it early on. He tried being a firm boss but came off more demeaning. He felt replaced by Roy as a sign that he wasn’t good enough. He didn’t feel taken seriously when he was laughed at for saying he’d talk to Isaac. Or when Roy first came back to coach, after a goal Ted walked right past Nate to shake Roy’s hand and the camera focused on Nate’s expression. All Nate wanted was to be scene and to be recognized primarily by Ted and his father. But yeah he absolutely should go to therapy.
@UCFJayBird

This. It's a common complaint that people find Nate's change in attitude forced, but if you go back and watch from the beginning and really pay attention to Nate with this in mind, you'll see so many small things that build into this. I've found that most people just don't like it because we don't want Nate to go down that path. We want him to be the nice guy who makes good. But this is more complex and probably the best writing the show has done besides how they deal with mental health issues and Ted's panic attacks.

I've seen you guys comment in a couple of episodes about the goalkeeper on penalty kicks and how bad they look. That's actually pretty common. Blocking a PK is one of the more difficult things to do in sports, and it usually relies on luck. The keeper pretty much has to guess which direction the shooter will kick it, and hope they guessed correctly.

I love that they're loving the show, but I do worry they're missing some of the themes "I was never going to let anyone get by me without knowing they might be hurting inside" - Nate has clearly been hurting since the show started. That doesn't excuse his actions of the last few episodes, but it does contextualize them, and its important to understand that rather than writing him off "Success isn't about the wins and losses" - Jamie was the best person to take the penalty show, and he knows that. But over the past two seasons, he's learned that giving Dani a chance to feel better about himself was worth more than the risk of losing the game

When higgins was talking to Keeley, the first two things he said seemed like he was off, but he was purposefully exaggerating - 'oh because itll be like a betrayal on the level of a greek tragedy!', as in, 'it's not that bad' he was being roundabout to make he realize instead of telling her straight up. With Nate, that's the product of very low self esteem, an extremely fragile ego, where every perceived slight is like a HUGE deal, and A LOT of jealousy. Really brilliant writing with his character. This isn't a guy who Ted can just fix with one speech or conversation. Even his reason, that Ted gave him attention and then somehow 'abandoned' him, wow, wasn't expecting that. He was head coach of UCLA basketball for 30+ years, easily one of the greatest sports franchises in the history of organized athletics: at any level and anywhere in the world. Their success was truly unfathomable. You can find a copy of it online; it has all the fundamental ingredients of a successful team. I think the sad part is that Ted's whole philosophy requires Ted, but his own mental health needed to come first at some point. Like the Normies are showing and other reactors, knowing someone is insecure and understanding it are two completely different things. Nate got dependent on Ted and when Ted needed to focus on himself, Nate felt abandoned. All his insults and bullying Nate unleashed on Ted in that scene were just empty words that Nate got heated and lashed out with. It's not right, it's not fair and he does need to apologize, but someone like Ted can parse through it and wait for the apology because he's already forgiven him.

"Ted abandoning Nate" so, this obviously didn't happen from the audience's point of view. We know Ted has just been dealing with his own (big!) issues, but it was pointed out by Nick Mohammed in talking about season 2 that they intentionally did not have a single scene with just Ted and Nate talking together - only in group settings. And Ted several times brushes aside Nate or his ideas (like when Nate offered to help with Isaac). So, while WE know that Ted didn't abandon Nate, it makes some sense from Nate's POV. Of course, that DOES NOT excuse what he did, but it explains it somewhat...

Respectfully, I see where Nate is coming from. Ted got picked for this job without having a clue about the sport while Nate was getting a fifth of the attention for doing the actual strategizing which was just one instance of disrespect too many for him. Saying his feelings are wrong bc u don't agree with them is disregarding the whole message of Ted Lasso, "be curious not judgemental". I think the viewers and the Normies were in a similar boat because Ted lasso as a show has been focusing so much on other characters Nate's fallen to the sidelines, were basically in Teds position when hes confronted but instead of showing the same empathy and restraint for Nate you wanted Beard to fight him. As someone with anger issues I understand how easy it is to get worked up but Nate made points. I think it's interesting that we all extended kindness to Nate in season one when he was getting bullied but now that his personality has been negatively impacted by that bullying we turn on him. Even Ted had to notice how snarky and rude Nate has been all season and didnt say shit, essentially letting Will become a new Nate. Thats the sad thing is, I do think Ted has abandoned Nate because even if he didnt need encouragement he needed guidance, someone to help him realize he was on the wrong path, and nobody was there for him.

Just wanna point out that Ted believes his father killed himself because Ted didn't tell his father how important he was...so Nate saying that to Ted would have felt pretty devastating from Ted's perspective.

The root of Nate’s problem was Ted hiring Roy after hiring Nate. It was not that he felt threatened by Roy. He took it as an insult. Nate believes he is a tactical genius., and Ted promoting him was recognition of that. So why did Ted hire Roy? What does Roy bring to the table that Nate doesn’t? In Nate’s mind, absolutely nothing. Nate took it as a sign that Ted does not believe in Nate. In Nate’s mind, Ted has such little faith in Nate that they need help from a washed up ex player. That’s why Nate feels like Ted abandoned him.

The key for me to understanding wtf was going on with Nate this season was the spitting. We see it depicted twice to make sure it's underlined, but it's the first time in the restaurant bathroom that I think back to. Where he tries out Rebecca's trick of making himself bigger, but he doesn't feel it. What DOES work for him is spitting on his own image, of what he probably sees as the part of himself that is weak. A way to push himself forward and degrade what he sees of the meek and lovable Nate from season 1, so he can "be a man." Because he doesn't know how to express that part of himself in any kind of healthy way. Nate is a man who has been belittled in his professional life and minimized in his family and personal life, (fathers is the prominent theme of the season) and this sets him up as a ticking time bomb. Ted is possibly the one positive male role model that Nate's had in his life, but it's too little too late. He's overlooked and ignored by his father, he spent his career in a locker room being belittled and dominated by the footballers he's worked with, this is the majority of time where Nathan Shelly has learned how to "be a man." There's not much mystery then why he goes on to treat Colin and Will the way he does once he gets his own position of power. And that speech in the end. There's SO much of his speech that has nothing to do with Ted, like it's directed at someone else. (Again, fathers are the theme of the season.) "You abandoned me." "I worked my ass off trying to get your attention back." "Without me they would've shipped you off back to f**kin' Kansas where you belong *with your son*." His father doesn't show him attention or affection, never taught him how to be man in any kind of healthy way, and now Nate is expressing his masculinity in all of the unhealthy ways he's learned from everywhere else.

Thankyou for saying this, I felt exactly the same about Nate. That bathroom scene absolutely took me out. I instantly saw what was ofcourse with him . Yes, his father was to be blamed completely for never loving his son. I am glad they reconciled in the 3rd season. We all cried there ❤

Nate very much reminds me of one of those people who don't deserve to progress in the world, because the moment they do they start to show their true colors. I've known people just like this, where they're so pitiful until the moment they get a taste of success and then you start to realize something terrible has been unleashed on the world and others. It's super fucked up, but it does happen.

A person who has been starved for parental approval his whole life, like Nate, sees the lack of constant attention and approval as abandonment. As soon as Roy was there to take up some of Ted’s attention and love, Nate felt deserted and slapped. Of *course* it’s his own issue, but it takes a lot of maturity & perspective to see that. Nate was persistently infantilized until Ted met him. You don’t throw all that off in a season and a half, not without help.

IMO, Nate the character dyed his hair because seeing someone with gray hair being a kit man would make it seem like he was too old to be a kit man. Once Nate got promoted, I feel his self confidence grew and he felt like he didn't need to do that anymore. So by the end of the season, he's looking more like his normal self. But, I could be wrong. Ted was taking the place of Nate's father with showing attention and giving him positive reinforcement. Now Rupert has got his claws into Nate. Sad to see Roy and Keeley on the rocks.

Actually, I watched the whole series once. . .then when I told my family about it, I watched it all agian. . . And pretty much from season 1 Ep 7. . . You can see Nate subtly decline and turn inwards. Then, in true to life fashion it seems to all explode at the end. I felt blind sided about it like you guys did. But then upon re-watching I was like. O shit, there it is. And theres another. . .and another.
