Just to clarify for when you guys were saying the pitch might have been unfair on Richmond: Wembley is a neutral ground, it is used for big games such as cup semi finals and finals, no team plays in it regularly. And while pitch sizes can vary, during the regular season teams play each other two times, once at home and once away, so there is no disadvantage that way either. They just got hammered in this case because that's how much of a gap there is between teams at the top of the premier league and the division below them (which Richmond are now playing in after getting relegated in Season 1).

Also, Wembley is the home of the England National Team. It's a big deal for a player (especially an English one) to get the chance to play there. Since it's neutral it's only really used for important cup games, so not everybody gets the chance.

I feel like the unethical implications of a therapist dating her patient is worse than Rebecca and Sam, but maybe that's just me.

In America at least, a therapist is barred by the American Psychological Association from dating a patient or having sex with a patient until a minimum of two years (some states five years) from termination of therapeutic service has passed, or they will have their license to practice suspended or even revoked.
@aquele4virou3

Yes, Sharon and Ted is a HARD NO! Even if you stop seeing a patient, there’s like a timeline until it is ethical for you to date. As therapist, which is so personal, I am afraid it would be still be weird even after years and they are touching on that subject now in s3 which yikes. But Rebecca and Sam is very weird too, she literally owes him as a player and has power to decide his career and that is beyond the fact she met him as a teenager already as his boss.

@@aquele4virou3 I've never been to a therapist so ig I'm not very educated on why this would be wrong, could you elaborate?
@aquele4virou3
@aquele4virou3 Жыл бұрын
@@sammy_1178 Okay. For instance, it is established that a therapist (and generally, all health professionals) cannot really provide services for significant others and that includes family and close friends, because you are biased and you can be affected by those relationships outside of the professional one that will be established (for instance, a surgeon can’t operate on a family member because there are higher chances for mistakes due to distress). If we go to the basic principles of bioethics: autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence and justice. In summary, one shall respect the patient and their wishes, cause no harm, to what is best for them and what is fair in general (not prioritize anyone). A relationship between a patient and a therapist needs to be based on trust and to have in mind the benefit of the patient, the support needs to be impartial and unconditional. A therapist holds a great amount of power over a patient, they are there to guide you through vulnerability, to identify and modify harmful behaviors, to look through your traumas, all of it gives them a great deal of power that they should not use over you. It also needs to stay under privilege. Now, from the moment you established that sort of relationship, you are no longer equal, because you are trusting that professional to do all that: to benefit you and your health, to not cause you harm. To add a romantic element when the therapist has all that power over the patient is problematic. Now, some say after a few years, it should be fine, but I guess it would depend in the circumstances (maybe you two reconnected after no contact for years and the patient has evolved and moved on from the reason he searched for therapy in the first place, but I personally think there would always be an unbalance, because they know vulnerable parts of you in an analytical and professional capacity, and that can be used for manipulation). But yeah, while in therapy, to date your therapist is a huge professional breach and if a professional does this, they should lose their license. If you fall in love with a patient, you should terminate treatment with no intention of pursuing a relationship. Same if your patient fall for you. Even being friends is a fine line to walk. Sure, having a few moments outside of a professional environment wouldn’t necessarily be wrong, but you shouldn’t mix things too much. Lots of times your health is dependent on that person and it is their job to establish boundaries and to maintain things professional, no crossing lines.

one of the things that's really well done about the scene between jamie and his dad is that in a lot of other shows, they would have tried to play that as a triumphant moment - a "wow, he's finally beating up his dad and overcoming his trauma" etc kind of moment. but in the reality of these situations - and his specifically - it's so tragic when you actually see it. he doesn't feel good - he doesn't feel vindicated, or triumphant, or powerful. he's confused, and hurt, and afraid, and has just been humiliated in front of his team. of course that isn't a happy moment for him. really impressive writing. also really impressive acting from phil dunster. everything from the microexpressions to the tiny flinch as roy's about to hug him. should've gotten an emmy for this season.

A discussion, in text, between two adults who are unaware of anything about the other person (age, class, race, etc.), is about as far away from grooming as you can get. Rebecca freaked out (somewhat understandably) but the things she was saying are the kinds of things we all say when we want to make a point and we're having outsized emotions - exaggerated, played to the extremes, so far off that it's comical. To call this grooming just waters down the meaning of the word to make it almost meaningless, and that takes away the word's power, which we *need* in actual cases of real grooming. Grooming requires an adult preying on a young person (usually underage), lying to them, isolating them from their friends, using the power imbalance to make their target trust and obey them and believe everything their groomer says. It's a cult of one, and the groomer is the cult leader. This is nowhere near anything resembling grooming.

Pat is trying to talk about Power Dynamics, which can be problematic. If one person is in a definitive position of power over another (age, wealth, position), it creates a power dynamic where the "lesser" person in the relationship can feel pressured to comply. It is NOT the same thing as grooming, though.
@douglas2938
@douglas2938 Жыл бұрын
"Grooming" has come dangerously close to lose all meaning at this point, it's supposed to refer to unquestionably predatory behavior by one taking advantage of a minor over a period of time to only act on it afterwards and give it a veneer of legality. As long as they were already adults when the relationship started, age gaps between legal adults are a different thing altogether. With Rebecca and Sam, the main issue we all take is with the power dynamics in that relationship, a boss dating an employee can and usually does end very badly.

Right. Neither grooming nor the age gap are the issues here, but the balance of power between the couple. Rebecca owns Sam's contract AND his place of employment, so she has huge power over him. Even if she does not think she is exercising power it is almost impossible to act in a completely fair and businesslike manner between employees when you are sleeping with one of them, particularly in secret. It could prove a problem for the whole team, and if the press get hold of it it surely would.

Nah, she didn’t groom him. They were anonymously exchanging messages and he is of legal age. That being said, she should have told him no and gone away. It is borderline immoral and unethical, not just because of the age difference, but because she is his boss. If this was to leak to the press or something, it would be wild and also if it went wrong, she has a lawsuit in her hands (I don’t think Sam would do that, but he could). Also he is 21 now, but he was 19 in the pilot and she was already his boss and we don’t know when they met and how long he had been in the team prior to the series beginning, if she met him when he was a minor. Another point of view is that Sam went from Nigeria straight to Richmond, from living with his parents to playing for the team, so yeah, he is still in his formative phase, specially in living independently from his parents (while still very much attached to them in the matter of decision-making). Their situation is not the worst in this scenario, but it reminds me a bit of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his wife (except there was probably grooming in that case, but at the same time a director is a temporary boss, while a club owner pretty much owns your services). The fact that her goddaughter is closer in age to Sam than Rebecca lmao She has a crush on him too 😅 PS: Sharon and Ted is a NO!!! It’s gross, unethical, immoral and in some places even illegal. She is his therapist, she would lose her license minimum.

The grooming thing is just her guilt and fear talking. Their hookup IS unethical because of the power differential, but it's certainly not grooming. Ted and Sharon? Wembley is usually reserved for big English games such as the "League" cup final (it's not the Premier League it's a separate tournament) as well as the FA Cup Final. As well as some playoff games for lower league teams. And some stadiums being slightly bigger than others doesn't really make much of a difference here.

At that range with the amount of pace on a professional’s shot, it’s usually impossible to adequately see which way the shot is going and still react with enough time to block it. PKs are a bit of a mind game and you have to outwit the other player and anticipate what they’re going to do.

And with pitch sizes, generally a larger pitch benefits attacking teams who want to have as much space as possible. Small pitches are better for teams that think they'll be defending more than attacking. A club like Richmond would have a small pitch, because they want to deny space to their more talented opposition.

Grooming is when an adult knowingly messages/talks to/hangs out with a minor with the intent to get them to fall in love or have sex once they’re of “legal” age. It takes a long time could even be years. Rebecca and Sam had no idea how old the person they were texting was (other than knowing they were both adults since it’s an adults only app). So not grooming by any definition. Also: Leonardo DiCaprio gets shit for his dating habits because he ONLY goes after women under 25. He actively seeks out very young women and so far every time his girlfriend has reached 25 they’ve broken up. Could be a coincidence? Sure. But it’s the conscious active decision to only date

People are certainly entitled to their own opinions, but yeah, 21 and however old Rebecca might be is an issue, an imbalance of power (age, boss) regardless of gender. It would be worse if it were a man, because men already have more power in society, the imbalance would be worse. And not the same as Leo - with Leo it’s a pattern, and with Rebecca it’s an accident, but still. It’s a thing. And it’s on the older person to ask why they can’t meet people at their level…insecurity deserves to be examined, and luckily it’s Ted Lasso so of course they do.

It wouldn't be worse for a man. She is the owner she signs his cheques. She ultimately decides whether he stays on the team or not etc etc. What if he starts to play badly while they're dating and their team suffers for his presence would she let go of him and effectively fire him if that's what's best for her team? What if they have a bad break up would she unjustly get rid of him just to not be around him anymore? What if the rest of the team finds out and considers Sam having an unfair situation by sleeping with the boss? The amount of conflict of interest is insane and these are all things that need to be considered. Her having a vagina instead of a penis does not erase or diminish that fundamentally flagrant imbalance of power. Like it's actually wild the amount excuses people will try to bring out, I didn't realise the double standard was hardwired this firmly in people until this storyline happened and so many people online try to pretend like it isn't that big of a deal. And it's not the same as Leo you are right. It's much much worse. Leo is not their boss.

It is even worse to me because Sam was 19 in season 1, he has his 20th bday in epi 2 or 3, so yeah, Rebecca was already his boss when he was s teenager (it’s unknown how old he was when he arrived at Richmond, but he could even be a minor). Add that he saw as an authority figure and the team was his family as he was away from home for the first time. Even in season 1 he sort of implies she the head/matriarch of their team/family. As for long term relationship, realistically, even if Sam is nice and sweet, they are wildly in different phases of their lives and Rebecca is far too mature for him. He was a good rebound though, a way for her to feel appreciated after those awful years with Rupert.

To add to the conversation: There are variations to all fields in all sports with some having minor and some having major differences. In the US the sport with playing areas that change the most from location to location would be baseball where the outfields dimensions change dramatically sometimes. While a game may have set lines of play, those uniform rules do not apply to the stadiums or arenas which will result in more or less fan interaction or even balls hitting scoreboards hanging above the field of play. I am sure some viewers will have their own stories to share (i.e. the green monster in Boston).

Different pitch sizes isn’t that big of a deal. To be clear, the rules state that the “recommended” pitch size is 105x68 meters (115x74 yards), but allow changes if it is impossible to fit it based on the stadium size (you can see how this might be relevant when there is promotion and relegation). The shortest pitches in the Prem are 110 yards, and the longest are 116. Additionally the skinniest fields are 73 yards while the widest is 78. Most fields, however, are exactly 115x74 yards.

Very interesting how the men and women reacted to Sam and Rebecca. The main difference between Rebecca and let’s say Rupert is that Rebecca didn’t know it was Sam. She wasn’t looking for a younger guy. The person just happen to be Sam. As for Rupert, he knew how old the other girl was and went after her. He purposely likes younger women which is of some concern. The only problem with Sam and Rebecca is the power dynamic as Rebecca is the boss. The way they meet is not because they both didn’t know who they were talking to

If swearing is just words why would Nate get in trouble for swearing at the ref? All words are just words but we gave them meaning that's how language works, and certain words mean ill will and hatefulness towards others... And you can totally groom someone in their early 20's, it's more about maturity and the difference in the power dynamic than age. Just because it is legal doesn't mean it's not immoral, like when those creeps who made the countdown calendar for Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen for when they became legal. It is a bit of a double standard if it was an older man and a younger woman, but unfortunately a man in power has more power and support from all the patriarchal institutions around him than a woman in power has, so if something happened the man would typically get a pass or help covering it up or using lawyers to get out of it. All this to say each situation is different, I think Sam and Rebecca can be fine if they establish boundaries and are very careful and conscious of their influence on another.

I've heard that a goalie staying in the same spot is statistically the best option because they always dive to one side, therefore the kicker often kicks towards the center of the goal. It's the equivalent of a granny throw free throw in basketball, it's statistically the best thing to do but no one does it because you look dumb as hell when it doesnt work.

Man city doesn’t play regularly at Wembley, the game was FA cup final, and most finals of are played at a neutral venue so neither team has home advantage, the coaches said man city have an advantage on that bigger field because of their play style. And yeah some pitches are different dimensions like how baseball outfields in the mlb.

The difference between Rebecca going on a date with Sam and Leonardo DiCaprio is that he ONLY dates women who are in their early 20s because they are young. That was not the case with Rebecca and Sam. So, nice try calling it a double standard, but no dice.

ok football knowledge for Americans: there is minimum and maximum dimension allowed in football stadium, regulated by fifa, minimum is 95m long 65m wide, maximum is 110m long 80m wide,( around this number, not 100% sure) every team can build their ground inside those parameter's based on their playstyle, if u want possession football u need big field, if u playing direct football u need narrow and short field, thts why every field size is different

I agree, but this argument was dumb tbh. if she was 40 and hes 20 they are both considered adults and legal and very normal, same thing if the roles are reversed. I would find it weird if a 40 year old male/female texts a 20 year old only for sex, but for a serious thing, I think its totally normal (ofc if they both are actually good people and not monsters)

The power dynamics issue can be a tricky one but you can groom people who are much younger than you, I don't necessarily view this situation as grooming. He's a grown man a professional athlete, I think that however her being the owner of the team and him being a player is problematic far more than the age difference of two consenting adults.

Pat how can you trust a dentist if he also has to go see a dentist? Your brain literally controls every function of your being. Why wouldn’t we need to go see a doctor about that? Think of therapist like dentist of the mind but instead of cleaning teeth they clean up all the shit that clogging up your head. Your friends can’t be the only outlets for your emotions. Sometimes it gets to be too much for them.

While there are definitely power dynamic issues between a boss and an employee dating, the age difference does not cut equally both ways. There are plenty of 18 year old rapists that have assaulted older women. 45 year old women are not the same kind of threat to a 21 year old man as the reverse.

Not like there's a sudden cut off in maturity once you reach the age of 18. For me personally with such a large age difference and the relationship between them (boss) still can be icky even if the younger partner is legally an adult at like 21 vs 40/50+. I don't know what the exact legal definition of grooming is though. Someone aged 17 with a 21 year old defintely would be less worse if anything (depending on the context and their maturity) than that imo.
