In the show "Ted Lasso", Ted is a fish out of water as he is an American football coach hired to coach a fictional English Premier League team. In this scene, Ted reminds us all to be curious. I used this clip to share about how leaders can be curious in their ministry. Watch the clip and see the reflection at ymsidekick.com/2020/11/09/the....

This speech is also for the bar patrons, the citizens of Richmond, the players, Rebecca, and Trent Grimm. When Ted is talking about 'Be curious, not judgmental, he is basically talking to EVERYONE at the same time, not just Rupert. They all underestimated him.

Both agree and disagree. From a meta level, as a TV it definitely is what you said. But I believe in the world of the show, Ted isn't being snarky or clever or anything. He feels bad for Rebecca and is trying genuinely just to teach Rupurts something. That's what makes this so wholesome for me. He's not dunking on the bad guy for the sake of it. He's trying to help even the worst person.
@Fakeaorta

@@MrOmgwaffles Yes, Ted is standing up for Rebecca at the same time he is talking about what everyone except for Coach Beard thinks of him as a coach. Rebecca later admitted she hired Ted because she thought he would fail. At the moment Ted thinks she also has faith in him. Ted most likely would have challenged Rupert even after Rebecca's confession.

I’ve watched this scene dozens of times. It’s one of my favorite in the whole series. But, it just occurred to me that Ted foreshadows what he’s gonna do to Rupert when he asks about snooker. “Snookered” being a term for being lured in to a trap unknowingly.

Could be wrong, but calling him “rupe a dupes” made me think of the “rope a dope” strategy, too. Sure felt like Ted was giving multiple hints that Rupers should take an out if Rupert would have listened instead of being so arrogant.

I wonder if it's difficult for Rupert to not admire Ted in this moment and think he may do well for the club. It's really such a surprising and symbolic scene. This adds to the fact that even the lads who commonly root against for him cheer for Ted when he wins. I feel like he has the look that he respects Ted from then on, even if sometimes his character masks it.

I think the wonderful fun of the writing is that Rupurt, much like real narcissists, just can't see how Ted is being so chipper and wants to take it as a challenge or fight, when really Ted is Trying to diffuse the situation and teach him something.

What I love about this, is that even when Ted wins the match, he's not a dick about it. It. All he does is give Rupert that look, tell him good game, and then he's on his way. Way. He's back to drinking with Rebecca and the rest of the bar patrons. He's not like haha I won in yout face. @@hastyscorpion they are different questions. Rupert asked if he liked darts, not if he played a lot which is very different. I love football but I’m not good at it. Ted answers the question truthfully, he’s more of a cornhole man. It’s possible he loved darts when he was 10-16 years old as it was tied into spending time with his dad. When his dad passed, it’s also possible his opinion of darts changes as it could be a painful of reminder of what was taken away from him.

He did ask if he liked darts but because of Ted's mannerisms around being a naive American architype it was in Rupert's mind that regardless whether he liked darts there was no way he would be good, let alone good enough to win if challenged so Rupert can get a moment over him. If he was curious when Ted said he did like darts Rupert would have then gone on to ask about whether he played alot or how good he was, rather than being arrogant and judging thinking he's a bumbling idiot so won't be good. It still works ultimately, the real tragedy of this scene nobody seems to notice..."Double in, double out"...which means ted getting the bullseye bust him lol.
