One of the many things I love about this show is how Ted reacts when his folksy sttempts to connect don't land the way he means them to. Like in season 1 with the plastic army men and what they symbolize when he gives them-- but when he tries to give one to Sam, he politely refuses it because he'd rather not have a symbol of American military power. Most people would be hurt and offended, but Ted is just like, "Oh, right, imperialism. Gotcha." and moves on without holding it against Sam. What an amazing way to model being responsive to other people's persepctives.

Gosh, did I relate to that. I live in Sacramento, where hockey SO not a thing, and I, of course, am a Chicago Blackhawks fan. Three Stanley Cups we won in the last decade, and the first two I had nobody to share it with. My wife was working or doing something else. In 2015, though, she sat through Game 6 with me, with one of my jerseys on, just knitting. Then we took some of our kids and grandkids out for ice cream. Third Cup was the best.

I haven’t watched any of Ted Lasso besides clips here and there. My guess is that Trent has been around football clubs a lot for quite a while, so he has probably seen a time when homophobia was rife. I think the little smile is to say that times have changed and that football clubs might not be what they once were anymore for gay people.

I have a lot of my favorite episodes from this show, but this episode and this moment is by far my favorite 1. This was beautiful and got me to really think how I say I don’t care to things. On the nose. I've wondered how I would handle someone coming out to me. This is how you do it. You don't care that they're [gay, lesbian, trans, whatever], but you do care about them and what they're going through and what they have gone through.

Even on matters that are much less important, I've been learning to modify my language. When someone offers me a choice of things, I try to say "I don't mind" instead of "I don't care", because what I mean is "one of these things is just as good as the other, thank you for offering" rather than any unfortunate inference that I don't care about the things they're presenting.

I think its one of those things where Jamie doesn't need the C to lead. People look to him to lead because he is Jamie Tart. But Sam deserves the recognition and he needs it because while very good he isn't flashy like Jamie or Danny. And Sam is super mature on and off the field.
@gcbryan89
@gcbryan89 11 ай бұрын
Usually the longest serving player gets the captain, or the most influential. Let's disregard Jamie's first stint in the club as he was nothing but an arse. When this team first started looking like a lasso team, Sam was the main man (no idea why Dani Rojas didn't get that much recognition as an ace). And even after Jamie's resurgence, Sam was still one of the leaders in the dressing room. So yea, could have gone to Sam or Jamie, but Sam serve longer in this lasso team, so it's him.

In 2003, ESPN tried its hand at an original, scripted series called Playmakers, about a professional [American] football team. Like Colin's character arc, the team's fullback is gay and is outed by a magazine. Coincidentally, he is also the only member of the team to make the Pro Bowl, to be held in Los Angeles. At the first practice after the outing, he addresses the team by saying, "I guess we all know something about me now. Yeah, I am the best player on this team. Seriously, yes, I'm gay. But I am not going anywhere---except Los Angeles." [Paraphrased from memory] The team accepts him, but the league pressures him to turn down the Pro Bowl invitation. The NFL exerted pressure on ESPN to pull the plug on the series after one season by threatening to renege on the deal to move Monday Night Football to ESPN.
