A music that was developed out of the pain of slavery and being segregated and persecuted and lynched afterwards. That's not too much to ask for, is it? This song is a masterpiece. The man playing the Gibson Byrdland is a master guitar player and is second to none. This man is a living legend. In 300 years people will think of him the same way people of today think of Beethoven or Mozart or Bach. No human has ever controlled tone in a guitar better than this man. He can make it cry, or sing like a song bird or growl like a wolf. This man is a guitar virtuoso. He is the motor city madman. This man is Theodore Anthony Nugent.

Ted gave him the Harold Robbins Custom shop guitar , which Ted traded to Steve. I have been to his home in Jackson Mi deer hunting, and he came to our bear camp in the U.P to hunt black bears and shot a really nice one, but most of the time he wasnt nice and pleasant not that i noticed. Ted has always been one of the greatest guitarists in the world. Never got the accolades he deserves. The crazy wild man routine and his politics have hurt him but he doesn’t care. The thing that always amazed me about his guitar playing is that it is almost effortless. He knows that guitar like you know the back of your hand. He is a virtuoso and so many people will never know it.

I spent time hanging with Ted after a concert in the early 80's. He was completely down to earth, polite, and fun to hang out with. I used to jam with Johnny Sauter, Ted's bass player on Weekend Warriors.

Seen him all over the Detroit area...high schools...Second Chance in Ann Arbor and Toledo arena..Full Tilt Boogie Ballroom...always right up there in the front. You know Dina, there never was a guitarist that could carry off a 12 min workout like Hibernation.. I don't think he plays it live so much these days. First time I saw him in London on the 'If It's Too Loud You Are Too Old Tour' .. he certainly did then and of course the immortal and definitive version on Double Live Gonzo was close after. The reason no one else could do a 'Hibernation' is that Ted really feels it and plays his heart out. Inspired stuff and knocks me out as much now as it did then. Yeah, no one else touched a Byrdland lol! No one, couldn't handle it. Hibernation is a staggering and beautifully put together piece, in the days when Ted never mentioned the old hunting business, it was more symbol and metaphor plus awesome attitude. The Double Live Gonzo version is the one that really smashed through the Van Allen belt of guitar work. :-)

Just in case you missed it, that man is playing an electric hollow-body through a wall of Fender combo amps, with only a volume knob & his fingers to control the madness!!! Ted definitely respected Hendrix’s guitar playing but you definitely said it well. This song pushes the line between music and art. So many emotions. So many stories the mood of each note tells. Hendrix definitely could rock some blues in a dreamy way but I agree with you; this song wouldn’t come out of the feelings of Hendrix’s. Only Ted could truly feel the vibe of this song and rock it.

Saginaw Civic Center, Summer 83 "World Penetration Tour" after first hearing him in the UP in 1976 and waiting for the moment I had my own license and car... I got tickets 1-6 when the box office opened. When you could actually still do that... Saw him many times subsequently all over the country while I travelled for work. One time in Concord CA I was in a record store and heard he was playing that night. I looked into the tickets and got two tickets in the front row, center...held back until two hours before the concert opened for people who WORKED and weren't sure they could make the concert. Everybody in the first two rows were working stiffs who got off work and checked to see what tickets 'were left' ! Great way to pay back the fans.

I saw Ted Nugent last night in Wichita with my 13 year old son. We stood up against the front stage barrier right in the middle and watched and heard magic. I'm glad he didn't talk politics. He let his guitar talk. He is every bit as charismatic, just as much a virtuoso, as the first time I saw him play in 1980 in the Omaha Civic Auditorium when I was 16. I'm glad he is still rocking, just like always. Keep it up, Ted.

Hibernation effects me like almost no other music. Something in that tune hits me to my soul. I've seen Ted live 5 times and will ser him again when possible. Don't always like his lyrics but feel he is one of the greatest.

Dammmm...I saw Ted 3 times, 1978, Philly Spectrum, and twice in Michigan, Ann Arbor and Detroit, in the 80's. This man can play a guitar! This particular post is amazing, it sounds just like the studio version. If you can play this good without hiding behind a studio, you are a great guitarist. It happened at Cal Jam 2...Ted's ego was over the roof, Derek and Rob had been booted from the band by Ted and Ted never did produce a top album, except for Wango Tango, but his approach to music had changed. It became all about Ted and the music wasn't the same. No longer were classics being written, now it was stuff like weekend warriors, state of shock, flying liplock and the like. There was no more grown up rock like, Great White Buffalo, Hibernation, Stranglehold, Workin hard playin hard.

Straight into Fender twins at extremely high volume using his controls, fingers, and creative mind. He used to mark the feedback points with tape then later memorized where the sweet spots were on stage. And for the record, Ted is deaf in one ear now. This piece was one of the turning points in my guitar playing career. 5 yrs old in 1976 when I first heard this. Been playing ever since! Every great guitarist knows this man is a force to be reckoned with and the greatest NorthAmerican on the planet, i first saw him at the vbcc in Huntsville Alabama with foreigner as opening act, my ears are still ringing, Cliff Davies shook my 12 year old ass hand and gave me his sweat soaked towel in gentlemen fashion as I hung over the balcony behind the stage as Ted was removed from the feedback drenched stage, i saw how he ran the show then and until I met him 30 years later around 2006 on a hunting excursion on his ranch in Michigan, diligent and professional yet mind blowing with the sense of integrity all Americans should strive for!

It's amazing how he confronts the feedback, tames it, and rides it like his b*tch. Many would be intimidated by standing directly in front of the amplifier stack and let the feedback build momentum where there is no room for error. That's where Ted chooses to make his stand as if in battle chipping away at the silence that once occupied that very space until it becomes a sculpture of defiance against the nothingness that existed before. Worked in bars with live bands for a decade before I got tired of the tug of war between raising children and working nights. I have had many friends who performed fulltime back in the 90's before karaoke replaced them because it's cheaper. Even now I have a young neighbor who recently lost his voice singing death metal to which I pointed out the different tricks of the trade to sooth his vocal cords, tea and honey etc, and showed him the DVD Unledded with Page and Plant and how Robert used female back up singers (one of which he later married) because he can't hit the high end of his vocal register. He was too young to see such an evolution in a musical career so it was new to him. I was just being poetic to show my admiration to that window of time called the 70's.

And also what I mean by it "blowing him up" is that his ego also cost him his band. Never was the same without Holmes and it hurt Ted. He blew away all his money and then he was humbled and his music was never the same either. These things happened because of an over blown ego. So yes, his ego blew him up and he was never the same. He could have been on top longer if he would of took care of his band instead of wanting to step all over them. He had to be the star and he took it too far.....a lesson to us all.

I saw Nugent twice in the seventies and the time i saw him at Soldier Field in Chicago, he was waist high in plastic gallon water jugs we had all tossed on stage. 80, 000 fans rocking out in the summertime. They heard him 40 miles away. Great show and Lynyrd Skynyrd was there along with 38 Special . Six dollar ticks back then, in 1977.

funny you mention this, i have allready searched such an article/lesson to do that, did not find it, but ted uses the sound you get when you hold the guitar to close to an amp when volume is up, how he does it..... i dont know my skills are not at that level :) also you see him finetuning the guitars sound i suppose he takes al on one humbucker with tone at 0 or 10. :) but thats speculation :)
