I fucking HATE people who only went to medical school so they could make it rain in a five star hotel room, and I don't want ANYONE to go into medicine because of that. I'd rather have a doctor who was obsessed with bugs as a little kid, who did well in science because he genuinely liked it, and who continues to study up on medicine after graduating because he has a genuine passion for the topic. I want a doctor who likes being a doctor, not some douchebro who just wants to own a bigger house.

A school's job should be to introduce kids to a wide variety of subjects (including carpentry, anatomy, physics, art), find out what they're interested in, and connect that with job opportunities. People who love shop class should be encouraged to become carpenters, stonemasons, and welders. People who love anatomy, biology, and chemistry should be encouraged to think about studying medicine.

I've heard this comment of black students to other black students. They would tell students who were learning and succeeding, they weren't "black enough". I wasn't sure if it was just failing students trying to keep others from succeeding because they were jealous, and trying to guilt the good black students into giving up. It would be nice to see black people succeeding more in education and careers. That will give them the human dignity of accomplishment, so they can enjoy a job well done. If you read developmental psychology you'll see that IQ is not a static measure. If you don't practise it will stay low. Who fares the best on that curve? Those who begin practising early, well Asian-American home culture is strict and puts lots of effort into education early on. Thus is it a wonder they are on top? But if you grow up around people who do not value education... look in the UK there are a lot of young working class white males who experience the same exact problem, they are falling behind. The environment where they grow up is toxic, the mentality pulls you back into bad behaviour where education is viewed very negatively. They'd rather listen to rap and smoke blunts than do math, you don't need to do that for a long time and you've pretty much excluded yourself from a good future. But fixing toxic mentality seems to be really really difficult in human societies. I am sure that racism did have an effect why these toxic mind sets got to the point where they are now, but how do you undo the damage? How do you make a kid in inner Detroit pick up a math book and not a gun? Especially as they see one or two like Chief Keef who has made millions, this math book is not going to get me laid or money they think, and they are right it won't right now, but sure will in the long run. But in that environment you might die the next day, so why bother with long term goals besides you'll probably be bullied if you'd even try. It is an endless cycle, I think the best solution is to move out if you can, somewhere you can isolate your children from those influences.

Inner City schools don't really educate their black students or prepare them to compete in the real world with White/Asian Students and Black Parents pretty much give their children the bare minimum in life then expect their black children to be able to compete with White and Asian children that have been giving all of the resources and education tools to succeed in life. Black Parents do a pretty shitty job at raising their kids and majority of them raise their kids in poverty. Barely any money set aside for their kids college tuition, no money to start a business, little to no wealth for their black children to inherent and they rarely educate their children and expose them to the most lucrative jobs/industries but try to push their kids into sports/entertainment instead of technology, law, business medicine, real estate, finance and investing. If you compare the amount of time Black Children watch Television, play video games vs White Kids and Asian Kids, you will see the huge disparity and one of the main reasons for lack of prepartion for adulthood. Black Parents don't really educate their children on building credit, managing money, opening bank accounts, applying for loans, opening businesses or the importance of saving and investing money to build wealth. Black Children are basically setup to fail and the worst part is Black Parents aren't even smart enough to realize their setting their children up for Failure. The day that Black People start to prioritize education, morales, values, principles over materialism and useless entertainment, that's when they will begin to prosper as a race of people. This is not 17 or 1800s, we have access to the internet, at this point, being illiterate academically and financially is a choice. Cultural attitudes make a difference. Black Hip-hop music culture immortalizes drug dealers and murderers. On a 2013 album Jay-Z, one of the country’s richest and most popular rappers, referenced one Wayne Perry in a song. Perry was a hit man in the 1980s for one of Washington, D.C.’s most notorious drug lords. He pleaded guilty in 1994 to five murders, and received five consecutive life sentences. (from book "Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed")

Norris Cool - White kids started using drugs. We also had some songs that glorified mass shooters, and then treated them like movie stars in the media by obsessing over their every word. Result? The odds of a white person becoming a spree killer went up. Ditto for black kids and run of the mill gangster bullshit. If you idolize any kind of behavior in the media, there are going to be kids who mimic that behavior. If you don't want white kids to use drugs and shoot up schools, then don't fucking idolize that behavior in the mainstream media. If you don't want black kids to deal drugs and become gangsters, then don't fucking idolize that behavior in the mainstream media. This is a really necessary conversation to have. And you have a very honest and thorough approach with respect to this dilemma. African American males are lagging behind their female counterparts in education, and it is not just mere coincidence. What also come to mind besides the lack of influence and visibility of black males in the STEM fields is also the presence of very negative role models in the music and entertainment industry. This includes many, but indeed not all, rappers, actors, actresses, and atheletes.... I've often wondered why our society does not highlight prominent scientists and inventors in the same way we do those in the aforementioned list......and if we eventually began to, what would be the public perception of this new kind of "entertainment"?

Although I work particularly with African American and Latino young men of color, the conversation about education and America's lack of performance in that critical area is well documented. Merely read, "The Declining Productivity of Education," by Brookings: www.brookings.edu/blog/social-mobility-memos/2016/12/23/the-declining-productivity-of-education/ If you are interested in learning more about our work, feel free to view our "White Paper." www.weshall217.com/white-paper.html It was amazing to me the number of racist comments attributed to this post pertaining to the academic challenges experienced by those who come from economically challenged environments. It was as if to say whites are fairing so much better academically - Read, "America Is Falling Behind On Educating Its Kids:" By, Harold Levy: www.cnn.com/2016/12/21/opinions/america-invest-again-in-education-levy/index.html Keep in mind, the biggest gap in America is not the achievement gap, it is the "Economic Gap." Both blacks and whites, those who come from affluence and those who come from poverty, struggle in the area of finances. The wealthiest 1% of Americans control approximately 50% of America's wealth - while the average American cannot put his hands on $1000 in cash that is not attached to a bill or debt. Can that failing also be attributed to ignorance, laziness, fatherlessness, low IQ, inability to learn, only wanting to play basketball, or simply because of your racial makeup? This is serious work that directly impacts the lives of these young men, their future possibilities, their families, and communities. Do I expect that the aforementioned comparison will lessen the hate-laced entries? No. But for those of you who are earnestly interested in positively adding to the discourse I hope by providing you a comparison that you can identify with (economics and how the misunderstanding of mastering it is not attributed to what race you are, etc.), may provide a starting place from which you can entertain the idea that failing to understand the significance of education and its enormous impact on your future financial well-being, is not a question of IQ as much as it is a reflection of a need to provide our children with corrective information that will help them make the critical connection between a quality education and their overall future financial independence. Join us in helping districts reshape the way we educate our students who are disproportionately impacted by poverty and under-resourced schools by visiting; www.weshall217.com/white-paper.html and sharing the link with decision-makers within your district. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our children and positively impact the future.

Here's the thing: Football and basketball don't put food on the table, yet black students are VERY engaged when it comes to those topics. You're NOT SUPPOSED to love math, science, English, or history because it puts food on the table. You're supposed to love those for the same reason you love football and basketball. It's interesting. It has a lot of history and depth to it. There are a thousand ways you can use the lessons gained from it in your own life, as you would with a "team sport" like basketball or football. If you're studying because you want money, then you honestly deserve to remain poor. Greedy people don't deserve to be rich. Passionate people do. People who can leverage their passion to make the world a better place, in a noticeable way, deserve every bit of the compensation they get. Not because they studied math, but because they LIKED it. Even if it didn't lead to fame and fortune.

Well, this speech was made at least three years ago, I see. Has the "education problem" among inner city single parent black kids improved or further deteriorated since then? Is there any remedy that's been successful at attenuating this problem - other than remedies that seek to paper over the issue, such as school boards adopting a "no expulsion" policy? The big difference between kids in my day and today is that we were subjected to that thing called "tough love." It instilled in most kids, even the most rambunctious, a sense of boundaries with responsibilities and consequences. The "victimization" doctrine prevalent today absolves kids (and parents, and school administrators) of responsibility and notion of consequence. The essential ingredient to becoming an acceptably functional human being (or dog, for that matter) is self-discipline. Always has been, always will be. Back in the day, those who were conscientious enough to eventually realize this truism sought that discipline by joining the military, if they didn't get it in their upbringing. Any proposed remedy that doesn't have "discipline" as its core principle is rubbish to my ears.

My point would be they make money by keeping us divided and as many of us ignorant as possible. Interesting world we live in...

From the time American black men got off the boat, he has been programmed to distance themselves from books in order to make fast money. The slave owners did not want to breed intelligence. They wanted to breed strong black men for the plantation. After slavery, the black man worked as a sharecropper without getting paid. He was too tired to go to school. The black Woman had to step in and perform odd jobs. But while she was performing odd jobs, she went to school. That is why black Women have black Women have higher rates of tertiary education attainment than American black men. It’s because they have no choice but to get an education. In the 80s, the NBA would draft Black American men with 4 yrs of college. Then, the NBA would draft players out of high school and make Them the star players (Lebron James, JR Smith, Dwight Howard). Nowadays, the NBA drafts black men in their freshman year of college and makes them Multi million contract stars (Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony). The message is pretty clear. An educated black man is not in white supremacist narrative

Most teachers are white most black children have a hard time because of the teachers. Black male are the farthest removed from relating to white female teachers. Black females somewhat relate to her because she is female ,white males relate because she most likely looks like his mother or family member. I have 3 children 2 boys and one girl they had an while female staff with 2 white male teachers even though the student body was 90% black. My sons struggled tremendously with white female teachers and did much better with white male teachers problably because my sons could better relate to the male factor.

The disconnect is that blacks culturally value education differently from other races. Blacks see education merely as a means to a better job and avoid/escape poverty. Other races while also embracing this idea they further see education as a means to better their society. Case in point; the attitude of many educated blacks aren't so different from the uneducated ones, many even develop worst attitude problems. While there is a tendancy for more professionalism and calmer deportment from the educated people from other races. This affects if your society improves or not because it addresses issues such as conflict resolution etc which is lacking in black communities globally. Hence the reason that success in many middleclass black homes dont trickle down to the next generations. Its like you have a middle class black family with successful parents but the kids act like thugs or involved in crime. However here's the twist: where are the educated black professionals and academics?.... Nowhere to be found....so in their absence black kids look up to Rap artists and Sports figures as their models. So how do you convince black youths that education is the key when all successful educated blacks are all indoors, sleeping or caught up in some public scandal?

Yes, if you're a lower advanced form of human being then I guess food and money would be on your mind as a child if you were poor. That's where white people and all other races are different from blacks. We think about ways to help each other while black kids do exactly what he stated. They think about food and money. Basically themselves. This doesn't belong in TED. We all grow tired of the excuses.

You have got to be fucking joking. Can you not understand that if you live in poverty and come from nothing that ofcourse money and food, 2 vital necessities are going to be on your mind. The people that go through this have the mindset and drive to chase success because they have nothing. If I got to feed my family I will do whatever it takes to get it. There is no such thing as excuses if my motherfucking stomach is touching my back Nobody ask to be poor or to have shitty circumstances and if it is so easy to get by in this world why are so many people homeless, sick, dead and in jail. You really should look at things with a more open mind

My first impulse was to remove many of the shortsighted and racist statements from this thread but I figured every statement has value, no matter how ill-informed, racist, or insulting. As an African American male educator, who made it out of poverty and the built-in societal snares, I consider myself best-suited to address this issue. The question is do I have the time or space to do so. In a nutshell - "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still," - that is to say, for those who are predisposed to propagate an ill-informed idea - they have totally bought into - there is nothing anyone can say that will dissuade them of their short-sighted reality. America represents systemic racism. You can see the evidence of it by how the system deals with policing. A terrorist is wounded, so he can be interrogated -a white woman who is shot by police, unjustifiably, ends with the firing of the chief. A black man with his hands above his head is shot dead in the street - not to mention a 12-year old boy holding a toy gun. You may recall a time when it was illegal for blacks to read --- wait for it. Have you ever considered the reasoning behind not wanting blacks to read? Ponder that for a moment. What would be gained by preventing an entire group of people from learning how to read? And, to further the intent - add a death penalty to any of them who were caught reading. Are you just reading or really processing the aforementioned inquiry? Now, for the real racist's they will propagate the historic timeframe between slavery and modern day - and point to the fact that blacks now receive the same education that their white counterparts enjoy. But upon closer examination we know that to be false. As I began - I do not have the space or time to delve totally into this debacle but I will leave you with a closing thought - For those of you who are familiar with the "Growth and Fixed," mindset, you are aware that the mind is unchallenged in its enormous capability to grasp and comprehend complex equations. The brain also accepts patterns of behavior and subtle nuances that are introduced and reinforced, as real. Those nuances can and will live for centuries (alas, Willie Lynch) - until met with an unbalanced forced. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the mental capabilities of young black males (this will shortly be proven out) - they are perceived as one of the greatest threats to the American system (for reasons I do not have time to fully engage). In time, the full wealth potential of the black community will be galvanized and directed for the uplifting of black America. When those resources are channelled toward a specific end - that including creating educational systems that speak to the unique mind of our males - you will witness a movement of intellect unforeseen. For now, however, all too many of our young men have not broken out of the mental chains passed down through generations of the most atrocious system ever created and enacted on a people. So for those of you still bent on spewing your racist bile - have at it.

Wes Hall Wes. Do all the people like myself who witnessed black attitude in the classroom first hand have a valued opinion. It's not about poverty but social values. Miss behaving black kids hold back other students. It's a deeply rooted cultural issue on both sides of the pond.
@jimlamanna97126 жыл бұрын
Wes Hall you are an example and a role model. but you're also a unicorn. your people are the reason. they created slavery and still do. not to whites anymore. to each other and the Arabs. but you know this, right? Or are you a liberal, Democrat, that needs to defend 8 horrible years of a failure (Obama) merely because of his race? Google up the Saan people from Somalia. they live in trees, sticks and stones for tools, haven't ascended to even metallurgy abilities. oh, and they're black. Don't label people racist because we don't need advice from lower grade humans. If you want us ignorant humans to listen to you Oh Wise One, try elevating your race to AVERAGE HUMANITY. 57 shot in Chicago this weekend. all black like you. Pathetic. your education hasn't done anything but make you into a fancy excuse riddled fool. blame yourself and your own people. then educate. White people are scared, disgusted, repulsed and disappointed of your race. why aren't you. Pathetic. name 1 successful black controlled nation, city, town on this planet. There isn't a single 1. not 1! pathetic. racism exists so that you have a career fighting against it. You can walk through my neighborhood. Maybe get questioned. Vice versa? Death is my result. why? George Bush's fault? pathetic.
