Netflix changed the world of entertainment -- first with DVD-by-mail, then with streaming media and then again with sensational original shows like "Orange Is the New Black" and "Stranger Things" -- but not without taking its fair share of risks. In conversation with TED curator Chris Anderson, Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings discusses the company's bold internal culture, the powerful algorithm that fuels their recommendations, the $8 billion worth of content they're investing in this year and his philanthropic pursuits supporting innovative education, among much more.

We live in a time when we have high quality and abondant entertainment directly at home. We can socialize and communicate with anyone on the planet instantly. We can transfer and acquire information like never before. We live in the era of Internet, and it is a magnificent tool. As any tool it can be used badly (excessive use, waste of time, hate, distraction...) but also with a conscious use of it, it is the most incredible tool. also very cheap. I am so grateful for this. We all live better than kings and queens used to not so long ago. Let's try to do something good for humans and the planet out of it.

One positive direction Netflix can go in moving forward is in reprising the second season (or third, depending on how you define them) of "The Get-Down", In doing so they could resolve the many cliffhanger plots left dangling at the end of the last episodic airing, finish the many storylines that were left still in mid-arc at that point, and give the proper closing to the telling of this amazingly well-done and highly entertaining mini-series.

I think there are two main reasons that Netflix has avoided the pitfalls of KZbin's algorithm driven descent into basal addiction: The most important is that Netflix is a curated service, and they don't pay producers to make surprise egg videos. And the second is that they optimize for more than watch time.

Licensing, Netflix tried to unite the library as much as possible, original work great for that because they release them globally. But let's say a local cable network in your country has the license over a certain show, and doesn't want to give it up. In another country, Netflix is able to acquire the license. Thus Netflix is only allowed to offer the show in that specific country

For someone who likes to discover and watch all kinds of movies, I find the netflix algorithm not working very well for me because the movies that the algorithm present to you are too confined and too focused. This is why sometimes I think netflix doesn't have a good selection of movies in different variety, which is not case. There should be a way to dial up or dial down the focus or the broadness of the algorithm search or recommendation.

I think he means every MINDLESS blockbuster movie. Netflix put all the businesses that had these films out of business, and now makes attaining them virtually impossible.

I have not watched this yet but will later. I had Netflix for 3 years and unsubscribed to them because its not a place to see great movies anymore, the focus is on Netflix Originals and THAT'S where the direction was strongly going. I didn't subscribe for that so I went to Amazon for my great movies that I do want to see.

Apple Slices Unite amazon video is horrible, it's a sweet incentive to their amazon prime and one day delivery, kindle package etc but to get it JUST for the movies? Definitely not worth it since you have to pay for half the other stuff you want. If they have it in America I'd recommend NowTV instead of amazon video.

I like Netflix but if it weren’t for the fact I watch it on my bros account I’d never watch. Honestly I’m content playing my video games, renting a new movie from redbox every now and then, and checking out movies/shows/books from my local library. TV ads annoy me, Netflix tends to have sequels but not the first in the series, and I just like to binge watch cartoons. I’m still really upset Netflix dropped futurama and family guy last year. I agree about the originals, I feel like (at least) half my recommendations are originals now. But amazon doesn’t seem to have a whole lot for me either or maybe they just fail to recommend enough shows/movies I like to me. I dropped it this year too because they got that new music thing and I refuse to even partly support it.

Regarding what he talked about the abandonment of Processes in the organisation, I think better than that, keep the Processes but also keep the info about why and in what context that Process was created in the first place, and an option/flexibility to not follow that Process if the reason/context doesn't apply to the situation at hand.

I must admit I worry that rich philanthropists try to spend money in a way according to their limited worldview, rather paying tax and letting society decide. I am not admonishing them but merely wondering- why so much charitable work in wealthy countries are devoted to health and education, when other countries achieve better outcomes with taxation.

Bob Dylan fooled the world for decades claiming to have written many of the melodies to his hit songs when in fact most of the melodies were from preexisting songs that he did not write, including Blowin In The Wind. In a last nail in the coffin scenario James Damiano's movie "Eleven Years" draws the straw that breaks the camel's back, rivets Bob Dylan to his secret past of plagiarism and rewrites musical history"......Virtue Films No artist can lay claim to the controversy that has surrounded the career of songwriter James Damiano. Forty Two years ago James Damiano began an odyssey that led him into a legal maelstrom with Bob Dylan that, to this day, fascinates the greatest of intellectual minds. Since auditioning for the legendary CBS Record producer John Hammond, Sr., who influenced the careers of music industry icons Charlie Christian, Billy Holiday, Bob Dylan, Pete Seger, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan , James has engaged in a half a billion dollar copyright infringement law suit with Bob Dylan. As the curtain rises on the stage of deceit we learn that CBS / Sony international recording artist, Bob Dylan not only used songs and lyrics written by James Damiano but also solicited Mr. Damiano's materials for a period of over ten years and eleven months. Bob Dylan's name is credited to the songs. One of those songs is nominated for a Grammy as the best rock song of the year. Ironically the title of that song is Dignity. The problem with this guy saying "information wants to be free" is the people who create this information need to make a living. Most aren't raking in billions as he put hit. Heck, most aren't even raking in millions. Instead of stealing the stuff you should only purchase what you really enjoy. I torrent the stuff for free, and if I enjoy it I truly pay for it. So far I've paid for numerous shows: The Waking Dead (didn't pay for Season 8 cause I hated it), I'm Dying Up Here, Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under, Vinyl (yes I enjoyed this cancelled show), and many others to numerous to list here. One show I didn't enjoy was Westworld so I didn't pay for it. The same concept goes for movies and games. Heck, I'll even sit through and click KZbin and other streaming site ads if the author and information is something I enjoy. The guy who started this post is a thief and probably doesn't have an ounce of creativity or entrepreneurship in his brain. Heck, he probably lives at home and can't hold a job or thinks he's too good to work for some places willing to hire him.

@Coeurlarme
@Coeurlarme 5 жыл бұрын
Which movies are you thinking about? Maybe you can help people discover these classic movies by naming a few here, and saying why they are great and who they might appeal to? Also, I think people can discover a lot of classic, and more importantly, great movies and tv shows, by just reading recommendation thread and post made by other people online. This is how I discovered my favourite shows and graphic novel. As long as people are sharing what they like you don't need video store to discover great stuff.

Coeurlarme I use to work at a video store. What I missed most was the discovery of a movie I never seen before. Movies from all over the world. Plus building relationships with store clerks gives a tremendous advantage bcz your out and about speaking to people. Rather than staying home flipping through what movies to watch. Netflex killed a culture of movie lovers. Like Criterion movies. One of my favorite documentaries that explores some of the movies I speak of is (The Story of Film: An Odyssey)...the video store I worked at was called Mondo kims...east village NYC it was famous bcz we had the largest collection of in the east coast. I met a lot celebs working there some of best times of my life I had working there I wish I could go back in time.

The interviewer made what should have been an interesting interview uninteresting. Shame.

Adam Datta sometimes I watch good ads. Rarely, but sometimes. Tbh I think it would be a good idea for advertisers to experiment more and push the envelop. Good ads of the future will barely look like ads. Also, 40 mph disclaimers at the ends of pill ads should be illegal.

If no one pays there would be no content at all... Without ads, no KZbin. This is reality.
