www.ted.com Jane Poynter tells her story of living two years and 20 minutes in Biosphere 2 -- an experience that provoked her to explore how we might sustain life in the harshest of environments. This is the first TED talk drawn from an independently organized TEDx event, held at the University of Southern California.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/tra.... Watch a highlight reel of the Top 10 TEDTalks at www.ted.com/ind...

This is a fantastic talk. She has good energy. With regards to the biosphere project I found the role of the soil within the enclosure particularly interesting. Essentially it was the microorganisms consuming organic matter within the soil which caused the CO2 problem. I wonder what would of happened if they put more thought into engineering the soil. I would love to have that job. This is just so interesting. :D

Why did the biosphere projects stop after one failed attempt ?
@271gadget
@271gadget 9 жыл бұрын
***** Wasn't really sustainable, Jane did not mention everything which happened. At one point she cut the tip of her finger of so went out of the biosphere for medical attention... Also the 8 members were not scientists so they did not entirely understand it all. At another point the scientists outside began pumping oxygen in and carbon dioxide out. Hence, this all defeats the idea of sustainable.

@@whitepeoplergullible9241 you can, they use it for other earth science projects now. I guess it was decided it's better put to use for other purposes rather than just continuing to put new people in it and experiment with a closed system again. But if we need it for that purpose again they could do it, the buildings are being maintained and they could go ahead and shut the doors again. Maybe one day we'll be looking to setting up a colony on the Moon and they'll do this experiment in the Biosphere with more scientific planning.

The idea was great and I think it should be attempted again with the lessons learned from the first experiment, but they need to do things right: 1. Put real scientists there. Most of the team in Biosphere 2, including Jane, had next to zero scientific background. 2. Don't try to fake the experiment like they did in the original one, using some resources from outside like... oxygen! 3. The biospherians don't need to me military personal, but they need military training. Jane was the first failure of the experiment when she cut the tip of her finger in the first 2 weeks, forcing her to leave and later return. By the way, when she returned, she brought new resources from outside. 4. Also, the need to someone (or at least 2 people) with some type of medical training. The fact the Jane had to leave the experiment because she cut the tip of her finger was embarrassing.

The goal is kind of weird, so why didn't they have tundra, why didn't they have an ice landscape? I mean, these are also areas on earth that take up a lot of space.
@2pua3
@2pua3 2 жыл бұрын
Part of it was finding biomes that would compliment and help each other. For example, the Desert was a fog desert, so it was more "wet" than a normal desert. The tundra wouldn't have contributed much and would have been difficult to maintain, esp because everything was interconnected. The biomes weren't separated. I also imagine logistically, it would have been a nightmare. The Sonoran Desert is *hot* and the cooling was a closed system. How would you keep it cold enough sustainably enough?

Why do we make coffins so comfortable? They always look pretty damn cozy and they cost a fortune, but I'm not quite sure what the benefit is. I think I'll go with cremation and save some space for the living. PS That solar radiation will cause some gnarly sun burns. I think there are some ways colonists could cope on Mars but it's all theory. One low tech solution is burying the colonies under a few layers of Martian soil. This could help but well need more than this.

I think there's a misconception here. Concrete absorbs CO2 to form Calcium Carbonate. It's not absorbing oxygen, just CO2 but that is equally bad because, plants need CO2 to survive and if concrete absorbs it, then you start to get a biosphere system failure. The main culprit of what was causing loss of oxygen was due to bacterial microbes in the soil which was consuming oxygen.
