According to Mr. Mitra -- the future of learning is not a competition -- it's asking great questions and encouraging the answers. He reminds us that the most profound ideas are often the simplest. Thank you, Mr. Mitra.

This talk makes me think of the Khan Academy, a website that has a bunch of different curricula that anyone is free to study from. I'm currently studying math on that site. I did really bad in math classes in secondary school, but I'm hoping that learning it at my own pace will help. I have ADD, so school tends to be really hard for me; I tend to learn better when I'm studying on my own since I can take breaks when I need to and don't have to worry about stressful tests and quizzes while I'm trying to learn. I guess what I'm saying is that this kind of school could also be very helpful for adults, not just for children. Some of us don't do very well in a traditional school but learn very well in a self-directed environment. I hope that this kind of school becomes established. In fact, I hope that this idea of self-directed education becomes more widespread. It's a very valuable idea for the future of education.

Loved this talk! Love the wise man! He literally answered all the questions I had on this topic about "boring education" and "lack of motivation". I kept smiling all the way through the video out of delight and enjoyment. I want Sugata Mitra and Salman Khan to be a ministers of the education in the world, because they not only know what they are doing, they also love it!

Excellent talk! I completely understand this teaching method. I use it EVERY SINGLE DAY as an adult. Problem, research, solution. Not Problem, go to school to learn 10,000 useless things barely associated with my problem, focus group, solution. Collaboration, idea sharing toward a common goal...great stuff.

If you read more extensively about these hole-in-the-wall projects, you'll actually find that most failed. Many computers were vandalized, computers broke down (without anyone to fix them), and electricity was cut off when bills weren't paid for the excessive usage. Here's one such piece about what happened. donaldclarkplanb.blogspot.com/2013/03/sugata-mitra-slum-chic-7-reasons-for.html Mitra is a wonderful speaker - inspirational and thought-provoking. But his presentation masks the reality of these sorts of endeavors.

Tom Buckley The whole webpage that you linked the blogger never talk about anything that is of concrete evidence against his whole idea. The idea that computers breakdown with no one fixing them, and electricity cutout when the bills were not paid. All those come down to funding and running a proper system. Computers were vandalised that‘s why when you noticed him saying at the end of his speech you need real life mediators.

An exciting concept for learning in the 21st century, "a school in the cloud." Found Mr Mitra's talk inspiring and entertaining. As a retired teacher and grandma I endorse the fact that the best learning happens when students are inspired, encouraged, and praised for their curiosity and discovery. Modern day technology inspires excitement to learn. An engaging teacher /facilitator/grandma is an important part of the process.

30 years ago, University of Georgia's science education philosophy was to capture the imagination of middle school learners (especially females) by making science hands-on and fun. Every year since then, I've incorporated ideas and activities to achieve this goal. SOLE is yet one more way to capture the minds of our youth.

This is an amazing proposal! I truly enjoyed this TED TALK and its radical view of education. As a secondary school teacher, my feeling is that before we built the School in the Cloud, we need to reimagine our schools. We should be there to provide a positive environment rather than threatening children with exams and distrust. After all, exams are too frequently a way to instil fear. Surely we should start by celebrating our students and facilitating their learning. We only prepare them for this every day more uncertain world if we teach them how to think for themselves!

I found this to be a little eye opening for how slow are education isn’t changing! And still doing the same things 200 years ago in school. So having children or student teach each other and learn with others can make it easier to learn? My favorite teachers are the ones who propose a question while not telling you the answer. It gets you really thinking. I find preachers or pastors do this a lot when talking anything Christian related. What if we had students work together like a group project on homework forcing kids to learns with each other.

I think Sugata-san's idea of a new kind of school is very good. I think in the future we'll be pretty useless and just learn to read. When we need something, all we have to do is go on the Internet to solve our doubts.

Thanks for this amazing Ted Talk, I really enjoyed it. I generally agree with the idea being proposed. It's specially interesting for me because I was home schooled, I studied at home until I was 12 years old. And I think, the actual way to educate the children is not the best, it could be so much better, mainly because of the way to evaluate, the exams. The exams make a lot of pressure on the children, and at that age they shouldn't have that pressure. I really hope that in the future, the way of learning changes and that the children go happy to school.
