You can't leave out Buddy MCgirt, he was a master fighter and trainer that knows defense and offense. Getting fighters to listen is the hardest part. Cus demanded excellence and loved Tyson. There are probably others still around. Defense isn't taught much anymore. Floyd is an excellent defensive fighter, and has never stopped in the gym. That is why he can still beat just about anyone. I would love to see him fight Lomachenko. That would be an interesting fight. At any age.

They are still teaching it , just so happens that Tyson has been the best exponent of it, but the Catskill gym is still going strong.

This style is extremely hard to master as well as physically taxing in a 8-12 round fight. It took a perfect storm of things (shorter fighter, freak of nature athlete, a boxer who was willing to learn one of the hardest styles of boxing) like Tyson to master it. Just like well never see a fighter fight in the Philly shell as well as Mayweather, no one will ever be better at the Peek-A-Boo then Tyson.

Well Done, Teddy. The peekaboo learning curve is steep. Many fighters will give up before they fully understand the key principles of the style. I think this is largely due to a lack of coaches who know how to teach it. When most people think of peekaboo boxing, they think of Mike Tyson, and rightfully so. Tyson displayed, for the entire world, in spectacularly brutal fashion just how effective the style can be. The problem is, while Tyson is solid proof that peekaboo boxing can be a viable style, even at the highest levels, his idolization has unintentionally led many boxers down the wrong path. Here’s why: A lot of boxers who try to incorporate the peekaboo style try to mimic Tyson. The issue is that Tyson’s style was a flavor of peekaboo that was tailored to his unique physical attributes. His exceptional speed and power allowed him to slip punches at high volume and capitalize on counter punching opportunities that the average peekaboo fighter would have difficulty with. The fundamental version of the style takes advantage of a high guard with minimal openings for opponents to attack. If you strip away the exceptional speed and power of fighters like Tyson or Patterson you would have a more modern example. One such example is Winky Wright… Strip away all of those preconceived ideas of what you think peekaboo looks like and work on the core principles and philosophy that Cus engineered.The secret is in the details. Learn to hold your gloves at the exact angle needed so punches either can’t fit through or they glide off the outside of the glove and miss. Here’s a few quotes from Cus himself that should give you an idea of just how dedicated he was to the peekaboo fundamentals: “Now, in my style, you cover up all the time. You never gamble. The right arm is always covering the liver, the left, the solar plexus, and the hands are protecting the chin.” “You gotta be protected, not part of the time, not most of the time, but all the time. You cannot gamble by using open stance because every time you gamble and lose, you get hurt. And when a fighter gets hurt, he is intimidated. He thinks he is tired and covers up.” “Always keep your chin tucked down into your chest. I don’t care if you are running roadwork or just walking around school or watching t.v. Keep that chin tucked down and your eyes looking up and out.”

Stay on the grind my guy . I started off boxing at 11 my uncle's and almost all my older cousins were competing in gold gloves - armature local boxing - also some in early mma so it was part of growing up in E side of st.paul Mn . Got away from it in h.s with wrestling and football but picked it back up in early 00's while in the USMC. The peekaboo style is not for everyone. Master the heavy bag I mean really master that.Also master your dead arm. How many pros only fight with one hand. If your power hand is your right hand then your left is your dead arm. Use the heavy bag and over time your left will be as good if not better than your right.Also use your jab and time it so the right hand is right behind it. SHARPEN YOUR TOOLS FIRST ! He also had trouble with Terrel Biggs. No Biggs isn't either of them, but difficulty with opponents when the discipline and skill are in tuned with each other is the nature of my comment. Tyson COULD lose to both Lewis & Holyfield in a potential Prime matchup, BUT, both of them COULD ALSO lose to Tyson if he Atlas & Rooney are together with him. Atlas provides the discipline and focus. Rooney provides the encouragement & emotional support. BOTH had his front & back from wicked ass Don King. I'm a fan of all 3 of them. As for Holyfield's elite competition, well that has nothing to do with indvidual matchups. Bowe, Moorer didn't want no part of Tyson. Bowe and Tyson were both from Brownsville Brooklyn as well. Friends. Just like Shannon Briggs from Brownsville. Tyson's main foes in that era would've still been Lewis & Holyfield anyway. The worser Tyson was in 1996/97, aithoigh still formidable. Still wins for Holyfield. Of the 2, Lewis is more difficult for Tyson. If you knew history, the reason Frazier & Norton never fought is because they were, wait for it, "friends" and just didn't care for Ali. Copout right??? I've never oncce heard Morrison express he wanted to fight Tyson. I'll check on that. Mercer would've fought anyone, TRUTH, but I don't recall either side express anything. Copout right??? Althogh Lewis was able to handle him as an amateur sparring, he still admits the difficulties of fighting Mike. Same possible scenario. 3 fight rubber match. Let's not act like what I said isn't reasonable considering the positive path Mike was on with both Atlas & Rooney in his corner simply based on what actually happened. I'm not the only person who's ever done that while still respecting the other fighters.

@Jews Did 9-11 So I checked up on the Morrison vs. Tyson fight. Morrison was supposed to make $38M to fight Mike in 1996 but he suddenly had HIV. It's speculated that he even had HIV because prior to that potential fight, and after, Morrison stayed on and off of drugs and drinking. As for the Tyson vs. Mercer fight, that fight was to take place in 2001. Lennox Lewis had a judge help him prevent that fight so he and Tyson could fight instead. Tyson really wanted to fight Mercer and he was gonna get $5 M even though the bigger payday later was with Lewis later. I've been knowing about the Tua situation, but he got to fight Lewis for the title and he used to spar with Holyfield to get ready for Tyson. Bowe was friends with with Mike and he had already quit anyway. Shannon Briggs was like a lil brother to Mike. Still to this day. It's on video. Mike was afraid of Foreman. King was gonna make the fight, and Mike said, "I'm not fighting that fuckin Monster". Foreman as recent as 3 yrs ago at least said "I'm glad he was scared because I wanted no part of Mike". As I said before about Moorer. He wasn't havin it. Cooper could've fought Tyson too. It just didn't happen.

With peekaboo, if you aggressively move in to striking distance, the opponent with throw a left of a right. If you dip left, right or under as you move in the opponents territory, 9 times out of 10 the punch will miss you, then you come up on the inside with punches. Then everytime you punch move your head, so the counter also misses. You can then stay in the pocket. I always found peekaboo was about drawing fire from an opponent on your terms, rather than being reactive, thus enabling a fighter to stay agressive

Yeah man spot on. Ive trained for the past 15 years and fought (amateur) and ive studied boxing my whole life. Il say that the best style in boxing is peekaboo. I used to think it was the philly shell/ detroit style because ive always been a huge fan of james toney, but after a long time i came to the conclusion that it is the peekaboo style. Purely because it is the most offensive and defensive style of fighting. Slipping, bobbing n weaving and shifting to create angles for the objective of throwing combination as ferousiously as possible is the Cus style. Moving after you hit is also imperative.. if u watch old tapes of tyson training u will hear Cus shouting “move you head” and “punch with both hands”. That was his main advice/criticisms to Mike. And that just shows the importance of what u are saying about moving your head by slipping or bobbing to get into shooting range hopefully evading the shot and countering instantly. Man i could go on for ages talking about this so i will stop here haha. I just think Cus was extremely special and we should still try to keep his style alive. By training or just transferring knowledge like this.. anyway Peace to you 👊🏾

Hello, everyone. I've never boxed, so great respect to those that have. I'm only a spectator. I'm so glad those four gentlemen came together when they did. Cus 'D' Mato, Teddy Atlas, Kevin Rooney, and of course, Mike Tyson. What a team! What an exciting fighter they produced. For me, no other heavyweight fighter has moved and shadow boxed like Mike Tyson, I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw him in 1986. No one ever wanted to dominate the World and did, like Mike Tyson did. I've never seen before or since, the excitement, the intrigue, the apprehension of when Mike Tyson climbed into the ring in the early part of his career. He won many of his fights by the fitness and condition he got himself into and his ring walk, and from staring into his opponents eyes, flexing his neck muscles, flicking his head from side to side. Just unbelievable. Mike was the perfect specimen, exactly what you'd expect the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world to look like. Mike lived that position in time, and cared and trained so hard to be that person. When Mike was fighting, with the technology you had back in those days, you couldn't look away for one second, or you'd miss something. Mike was such an exciting fighter to watch. I so miss those times now. For whatever reason, its not same now. At one time, Mike was fighting every month. As Mike grew older, as we all do, his fitness and athleticism lessened from that youngest heavyweight world champion of all time. Obviousy a fan, I don't think he should be judged on his fights with Lennox and Evander. Great respect to those gentlemen, they'd never in a million years have coped with a twenty year old Mike Tyson back in the day. It was upsetting to see the end of Mike's career as he was so much better than that. With huge respect to many other heavyweight fighters at that time, for me, there's never been before or since, a Mike Tyson. That's what Mike set out to do and that for me is absolutely what he acomplished. Absolutely no doubt, no question whatsoever. This is just my own humble opinion. A great, great time to see and live through.

If anyone's interested, Mike Tyson was cornered by Rafael Cordeiro for his exhibition fight with Roy Jones Jr. Great matchup I would say. Cordeiro trained a bunch of demons from Brazil and is well suited to helping savage men fight.

Both Teddy and Rooney were brilliant trainers for Tyson, but Teddy would have been a better trainer for Tyson in regards to longevity/longer time because of his psychology. He would have connected well with Tyson when he went to the dark places in life and made him come back again...

Teddy, there is no boxing/mma coaches tht can break things down (in enough debt) in a film sesh, And not much emphasize on the mental aspect or MENTION it as MUCH as you do. Maybe there is but how u EXPLAIN things can be the reason why I understand you more than some. I love your style of coaching, it actually motivates me more in life and in a sparring session. I wish I was born bacc then bcause it seems like the morals were more out there and when you speak, I see visions in my head when you explained the peek a boo which also lead to me thinking about life in a way. 💯

Left out one of the key ingredients to the peek-aboo that out of all the fighters that used it before Mike, didn't even do....and it's probably because Mike was one of a kind and this style was perfect for HIM. This component is the Cus' D'amato "shift" or the footwork that mike used that enabled him to create angles so that he could attack from wherever he was positioned; he'd actually switch back and forth between orthodox and southpaw-- which really left no weakness/disadvantages since he had power in both hands. Cus was a smart man who created a unique style and found the perfect boxer to pull it off the most proficiently, wish I could have trained under him--genius trainer and philosopher!

The best thing about the peekaboo was how you were able to combine the offense and defense, the way you could make the opponent miss in order to set up the big punches. the way Tyson and Patterson would weave those hooks, jab to the head to get his opponent to become defensive, and then the D’mato shift to open a hook to the head. It was all about manipulating your opponent, making them miss to them open up a shot, the sheer aggressiveness and relentlessness. People often mistake it as just a “brawling” style, without mentioning the fact that a lot of strategic thinking goes into fighting with this style.

I remember people making fun of Tyson in early interviews when he said "I'm impetuous" . They thought he either didn't know the meaning of the word or was mistaking it for a different word. Well look it up. He knew EXACTLY what he was saying . That attitude is built right into the style. You can't separate the two. It's aggressive , intelligent and single-minded at the same time.

Tyson from 1980-1990 was the best we ever saw. He was so dependent on Cus, that when he died, it opened the door for Don King to own Tyson. Tyson with Atlas/Rooney would have been DEVASTATING for 2 decades.

N Cuz had to severe ties with him because Teddy put a gun to Tyson's head and threatened to blow his brains out if he ever came near his underage niece again. All these men are great men... but no man is perfect. Tyson was 14 at the time but boy was he an animal. The irony is Tyson wouldn't be Tyson if he didn't go through what he went through as a child.

One crucial point is that when you get in close, you want to always be trying to get behind them like you’re skipping around ‘em. As you’re feeding them the hooks, try to get your leading foot as close to behind them as possible without sacrificing your footing or your balance! If they manage to step out and create a distance, windmill straight jabs at them until they back off completely, then charge in, faint the jab until you’re close and repeat.
