While discussing the boxing careers of Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas, Teddy Atlas suggests that Tyson, although a great talent, lacked resolve. Teddy argues that Tyson's first real challenge resulted in the biggest upset in sports history - losing his heavyweight title to Douglas in 1990. Despite previously failing to live up to his potential due to a lack of resolve, Douglas managed to do so in this fight, as the memory of his recently deceased mother gave him strength. Teddy points out that while Tyson was known for his explosive talent, he lacked the "engine" of character and soul that successful boxers need. Teddy suggests that Tyson's six losses represent the only real fights he had and are indicative of his lack of resolve when faced with real challenges. Mike and Roy forever my favorite boxers of all time but the way Teddy broke it down about Buster Douglas having that one night of greatness just truly made me appreciate and respect Douglas and how important that moment was for him personally for the first time ever.

Douglas dominated Tyson that night. Controlled the fight until Mike caught him with a solid shot in the 7th or 8th round. He got up in time, bro. Then went back to work, and got Mike a round or two later. Mike managed to get up, but he was rocked. Ref stopped it right there, and he was correct. Mike was reeling. Douglas was heavier than Mike, and showed real heart to come back from the knockdown. Something Tyson could never do. Teddy is spot on with his description of that classic. Tyson is a top-10 heavyweight of all time, but Douglas was better on that night!!!

I believe Teddy Atlas is speaking on what he knows about Tyson. Being that he was his original trainer with Cus D'Amato before they fell out. However, Tyson still had talent and became one of the greatest fighters ever! Again, I believe that Teddy is speaking on the mental aspect of Mike. I still believe that he was a great fighter, but I understand what Teddy is saying.

That is absolutely true. About a year ago I was watching Tyson's first fight after he fired Rooney. I didn't know that was his first fight after firing Rooney while watching it but I have watched every Mike Tyson fight a number of times so I know his style before and after Rooney. While I was watching the fight I was thinking "Man Tyson is fighting like crap in this fight, what is wrong with him?" I thought no way is Rooney his trainer the way he is fighting. I rushed online to see what his first fight was after firing Rooney and sure enough that was it. Tyson became slower, just trying to head hunt all the time and it's well known his training discipline went down. Tyson needed a controlling trainer that he trusted to keep him focused on and at his peak level and he was never at his best again after Rooney left. Still good but never at his elite level ever again.

Or like Tyson mentions in his book that after he won the title at 21 he no longer loved the sport and felt there was nothing left to accomplish. He was just boxing and going through the motions after thst and seen he could knock guys out without hardly training. Wow, so well said. I was never a huge fan of Tyson for this reason. I felt Tyson in his prime, deep down was a pretty troubled man, and many of his fans were seemingly seeing the savagery of Tyson as a reflection of who they were or wished to be. To me Tyson was kind of like a child, and to be honest, I worried about him. We are fortunate that he survived and is doing great things, being a good role model.

I love and respect Teddy Atlas, he's a straight shooter, (no pun intended) and no nonsense kind of guy who knows his stuff. As much as I love Tyson, Atlas isn't wrong.... However, I have to disagree with Teddy's point that Tyson never overcame a competitive fight.. Yes, most of Tyson's fights were like what Teddy said BUT Um, Tyson vs Ruddock wasn't a cake walk. Donovan Razor Ruddock was one of the hardest punchers in that time. Sure, he didn't have a great resume' and had defensive flaws but he was no tomato can and had a decent record.

I'm not sure everything is in absolutes. He overcame Ruddock, who in both fights was spending the bulk of the time getting his butt kicked, with it looking better because other than the Douglas fight, we were just used to straight domination. He landed a few good shots while never looking the part of an eventual winner. I'll grant you it shows Tyson wasn't a sheer frontrunner. But for right or wrong, boxing greatness at its highest level needs to come with that little X-factor that shows a fighter winning a fight against another great fighter, winning when it looked like he was gonna lose, or winning as an underdog--things he never did.

I'll never forget seeing Mike lose that fight and I agree with Vlad I'm 47 I saw that fight on TV at home with my parent's And my Mom and dad were both huge boxing fans and got me into it and Tyson is my All time favorite. My Mom noticed immediately that Mike looked weak that night and didn't have the fire in his Eyes. We didn't know that Mike was High on street drugs and didn't train but Mike underestimated the wrong man Douglas mother had just died and He swore He was gonna win for Her and He did He didn't just beat Mike He beat the Heck out of Mike.

Tysons first count was as long there is a KZbin split screen count of the two and they are exactly the same. The difference was Douglas was coherent and ready to get back up, was watching the refs count and could have got up at any time. Tyson staggered to his feet. A lot of people who dont know boxing history. The fact is Mike was undefeated with Cus D'Amato's training protegee Kevin Rooney. He got rid of Rooney because he started getting influence by afrocentrism and black muslims and wanted to surround himself with black men. He fired Rooney without even telling him why and still never apologized to him. And then he got his first loss right after firing Rooney, who had Tyson in insane physical shape. Like Teddy said when Mike was a kid he was "easily misled". Thrn after that loss to buster it was all downhill from there. From prison to drugs and all the other losses.

This guy is an all-time great trainer and one specifically who in fact trained Mike. His opinion is a valid one and he's not lying on him. Mike's issues were deep-seated and like Teddy said, he was one of those types in his younger days that if you stood up to him and had elite level skills yourself you had a chance against him. In the case of Douglas he shouldn't have had a chance against him but Mike underestimated him, let his ego get inflated and didn't train anywhere near as hard as he should've for the fight. I said it about the second Roberto Duran/Sugar Ray Leonard fight; any king that doesn't keep prepared to defend his crown isn't worthy to sit on the throne. At that point in time, Mike wasn't anymore...

During the 1984 Olympics Tyson and Holyfield had a few sparring sessions. The few observers at the time said that this was just about as good of a boxing exhibition as you could see. One other thing came out of all of this. All present at the time agreed that Holyfield consistently got the best of Tyson. Teddy Atlas is right. By the way Tyson didn't want any part of a prime Riddick Bowe. He claimed that they were friends. All of the more reason to make a fight because each man could have a nice payday. Ali would give certain fighters a shot so they could get a payday. That's not uncommon. Mike was menacing and spectacular but he never had a victory over any of the top contenders of his generation.

Atlas was actually right here. When i was young i thought Tyson was superman & unbeatable even after he lost. But then i got older & got into boxing & actually became a real boxing fan & not a casual. I went back & watch all Tyson's old fights before Douglas & realized he was actually fighting ALL BUMS. & It was the record padding process every boxer goes through to make them look champion ready. Even Douglas was a bum but that night he wanted it more than tyson. Everytime Tyson faced REAL CHAMPIONS he lost. So actually he looked good against bums but could never overcome real champs. Ali had a fairly steady and loving upbringing and Angelo Dundee was in his corner till the end. Joe Louis had Jacky Blackburn in his corner. Tyson had a traumatic start in his first 12 years and 6 years later Cus died. After the Tubbs fight his professional support crumbled. If Cus lived till the end of Tyson's career he would've retired undefeated, probably somewhere in the late 90s having defeated Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Bowe etc. So having said that despite his horrible upbringing in his formative years, he would've been great till the end and probably be mentioned by all boxing fans and historians as the greatest ever. Quite weird that Teddy Atlas (who is a trainer) never mentions this. Maybe he doesn't wanna see these solid arguments

That fight showed Tyson would have troubles with a George Foreman or Sonny Liston. Big guys with jack hammer jabs. Angelo Dundee called the outcome too. I don't think Tyson quit in that fight --he was getting his ass kicked for 10 rounds but he never quit.

@@michaelloughrie5519 It's a 3-4 round fight in 1974 or 1987. 1974 Foreman by KO 1987-1992 Foreman by KO. Not only that but I don't call 1970-1974 Foreman prime. Big George became a much more relaxed fighter after he returned from a 10 year hiatus. But against Tyson it's Foreman by KO regardless of which version gets in the ring. BTW- Buster Douglas performance against Tyson was likely the best performance by anyone in a heavyweight title fight. Buster boxed on a dime that night.

And a lot of the reason they didn't offer resistance was because of how good Tyson was. But there are no fighters who are put on the absolute top shelf who failed to deliver in just about every competitive spot they were in and historically, you can't not count that against him.

Buster Douglas was huge tho dude had a 83 inch reach and even though Tyson lost he was fighting back and got up when dropped by hugs shots. I think Teddy just mad that Tyson abandoned him and stayed with Cus. Mike Tyson lost to Buster had mostly to do with the fact that Tyson got too comfortable knocking guys out easily that he began to abandoned his great technique like head movement, combinations, body shots, using his jab to nullify his opponent jab, and leaping forward with the right cross to close the distance and hit his opponent. He became 1 dimensional fighter who just simply came forward with no head movement and throwing one punch at a time with no technique. And plus after Tyson got with that sheisty promoter Don king, he also left his old trainer Kevin Rooney. Despite all that Tyson did manage to drop Buster and should have got a KO but the ref did a long count, cheating Tyson out of a KO win.

I think Mr. Atlas is perhaps, in my opinion, over-complicating the Tyson loss to Douglas. I see and respect his thought process but I think it is simply that Tyson underestimated the skilled, motivated, and prepared James "Buster" Douglas and came into the fight expecting to easily overpower the little-known contender, but he was caught by surprise and was not able to adjust. Tyson is not the first "great" to underestimate an opponent and pay the price for it. Look at Ali/Spinks and just what happened with Fury and Ngannou. I believe Tyson had a rough night, but it doesn't mean he wasn't a great boxer. I always thought that if Tyson Douglas II happened, Tyson would have gone into the fight more educated on Douglas and also physically ready to fight hard and stop him. But that's just my opinion. You can probably make a strong case that the one factor that held Tyson back from being considered an ATG was his discipline and consistency.

Tyson wasn’t able to overcome resistance in a competitive fight. Buster Douglas whipped his ass for much of the fight but Tyson did endure and drop him in the 8 th around. However, Tyson went on to evader Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. And Tyson quit 3 times (biting Holyfield’s ear, not getting up against Williams, and not leaving the corner against McBride )

The main reason for these things is Mike Tyson had absolutely no desire to be fighting. He actually hated it at that time and was only doing it for a payday. Now if you took Mike Tyson with a fire in his heart in a passion for boxing, all of these guys would have probably been knocked out. How you feel about what you're doing dictates the outcome and we can all think of examples in our own lives.

In fact, every time he fought a great fighter he lost by getting knocked out and he never went the distance in any of his losses. You can’t say that about other all time great fighters. During those days Mike used to be my favorite boxer until my older brother told me that Mike really wasn’t fighting anybody and then challenged me to look at the fighting records of all the fighters Mike had beat, especially the ones he knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round. The results were shocking. 90% of those guys were straight bums. So much so that Mike was able to have a fight every 2 weeks in padding his boxing record. Go look it up for yourself and take your emotions out of it. Mike just might be the most overrated heavyweight of all time. He was a good fighter, just not great.
