Teddy must have been brought up listening to great old country songs . His great cover versions pay the ultimate respect to the songs and the writers . Boudleaux & Felice Bryant , Everly Brothers and Leonard Cohen to name just a few . Teddy Thompson the real deal .

Buddy Holly is also a favourite of his, and that too shows.

This is one of the most beautiful, captivating songs I have ever heard. I have not heard any other rendition of it, and do not want to, because no other could match this one, with Teddy's haunting, heart-wrenching delivery, combined with the orchestral backing featured here. This video is perfect, going through the steps of a courtship showing dancing intimacy, her struggle with feeling he is not the one, and the final goodbye as he walks dejectedly away with his head down in despair. Don't blink at the end as the video fades out and you will see Teddy's sad face bow, reprising that goodbye scene. Another factor bonding me to the song is the fact that I and my family have spent many wonderful vacation weeks in Gatlinburg TN, sleeping in the Gatlinburg Inn where Mr. and Mrs. Bryant spent many off-season days (the Inn was closed during winter) writing many of their 800 published songs, including the TN state song, "Rocky Top," although I do not know that they were there when they wrote this song.

Kitty Wells had the first recorded version (ca. 1957 or so). Everly Bros. rec'd it in the early 60's. At least a couple others used it but have no recollection of who it was. Let Google be your friend, I guess?

It also doesn't hurt that his dad is a genius musician. Teddy had a wealthy upbringing and had access to every instrument he could've desired in his own home. Even if he was just Richard's step son, just being in that environment alone would have turned most kids into very good musicians.

Ridiculous isn't it? This seems to be the golden age for talentless, mainly females, egotists who are making careers out of strangulated tuneless noises that pass for music. There seems to be no place for beautiful voices and music at present. I hope you have checked out Teddy's latest work which is a wonderful Thompson family album with some wonderfully good stuff on it. Called "Family"

The first one i heard was "She still thinks i care" then Delilah. The voice is bloody amazing and i love how you can't put him into a box. Some of the stuff he sings is very country and some quite jazzy and then rocky like "Can't sing straight" As you can see i'm getting a little obsessed :o) Bought 3 of his albums this week.

Thanx. Great song, and I'm not even into country all that much! There's just something about Teddy Thompson's performance (and the unusual string quartet) that make it more universal than just a song geared strictly toward a country audience. That song is a potential cross-over hit if it's promoted to non-country stations properly, Thanx again for filling me in on the writers.
