The tenth type of collector rides around London on a moped admiring other people’s watches, and adds their watch to their collection. These mad lads are really dedicated to the hobby.

Did you see the news item a couple of days ago, with the under cover cop posing as a lone semi drunk with an expensive watch clearly on show in one of these robbery hotspots in London? He was ‘befriended’ by a guy & then a gang appeared to wrestle the watch from him. They were then ambushed by a number of police, who made arrests. Apparently incidents of watch crime has allegedly been vastly reduced since.

The Value Buyer has a slight twist type to it: the Spec Sheet Hunter. This collector wants to, not just find bang for the buck, but wants to stack stats and list them like they are building a fantasy sports team or justifying why something for “under X dollars” with “sapphire, Swiss movement, finishing, dial treatment. . . et al” makes something not just a better value, but THE best watch you can buy for the money. They aren’t brand obsessed, they just need to fill the sheet with numbers to show that they came out ahead.

A minimalist collector here, the main reason being that I don’t have much money to spare for watches (actually, do, but I tend to not spend much on accessories) so I only brought a few that I really wanted (I even normally took one or more years to decide to buy just one watch) most of them are quite pricey. And as old saying “buy once, cry once.”

They're usually the type to ask on forums/groups "what am I missing?" or "what should I get next?" and therefore end up buying a watch based on other people's thoughts or to fill a supposed gap, rather than actually wanting a specific watch because they like it...

great content. Another Category: the collector who attaches watches to other interests. For example, really into film, collects watches featured in favorite films. Really into adventure sports, collects watches that reflect the values of that sport. I partially fall into this category, and two of my favorite watches are the Hamilton pilot day date, which I wear, and the original murph, which I gave to my daughter away at school. It's a connection to the watch that goes beyond anything else. Perhaps one more category - the anti-trend watch buyer. This buyer refuses to buy a Tudor, and really likes the Hamilton field khaki but waited 2 years to buy it.

I was a “flipper” when I started. I fell in/out of love with watches and sold off a lot of mostly entry-level pieces. The only “expensive” watch I ever re-bought after selling was the Oris Aquis Cherry 41.5. I moved on from it so I could get into a Tudor. But I miss it, so I ended up saving up, getting another one, and I’m happy to have it back.

The tool watch category had me laughing uproariously. Perfectly skewered; guilty as charged. And yes, I’m wearing my Fortis today. Touché. Corollary to finding reasons to use a watch for its intended purpose: using a particular activity as an excuse to buy a watch to use for it. I wouldn’t know anything about that….. 😂

Hey teddy, you could add a few more types of collectors: 1) complication / movement collector (collector who needs to collect at least a piece in each different complication 2) metals collector (watch collector who must collect ie a carbon; stainless steel; titanium, gold, rose gold etc… and this applies to dial colours (maybe it can be also broadly categorized as an aesthetic collector which also applies to pple to collect bedazzled / prefer unique or trendy/new designs Have u met pple who do that?

The Checklist Ticker - the person who wants to collect all the types of watches, colors and features they feel they need. Types as in dive, GADA, sporty, casual, dressy, strict dress, flieger, field, features as in moonphase, chrono, GMT, manual/auto, textured dial/guilloche, asymmetrical dial, mini rotor, dial rail, applied indices, lume, different fonts of numbers and different shapes of hands, and finally, colors as in at least white, black, grey, blue, green and possibly also red, purple and glacier. I'm sure someone of this type could pack this many features in less than 10 watches.

I’m a Minimalist!! I put everything in my Tudor North Flag back in 2017 and since then never bought any “major” watch. Even though I’m still checking watches and dreaming about “the next one”. I’ll build my collection around three criteria: countries (owning one watch from Switzerland, Germany, France, Japan…) complications and caliber (manufacture). But in the end it’s more a love at first sight relationship with watches and the “next one” may not fall in any of those criteria! 😂

Ah yes the fun collector. I have a Swatch Clearly Skin just because it’s fun. In a way that’s also true of my Bulova Lunar Pilot. I waited two years to get a Neptune MoonSwatch ‘cause I thought it was fun. But it had too high an unobtainium content. In the meantime the price of the 45mm Lunar Pilot kept dropping. So my other fun watch is a Lunar Pilot.

Great video, thank you, Teddy! On the (sub)category of minimalists who know more about other peoples' watches and appreciate them from a far without necessarily owning them - I call them 'watch enthusiasts' as opposed to 'watch collectors' - their collection is quite limited in relation to the general 'watch collector' as they do not collect outside of their small ultra curated collection and at the same time they admire and are engulfed in the world of watches, which is also freeing if one of the reasons for this approach is strictly budgetary! This distinguishing between the two is for me one of the pearls of knowledge and deeper understanding of this hobby :)

I would argue the "watches are no longer tools" crowd are the ones only buying Rolex, AP, and other luxury brands. While those brands are made to be durable, they're priced for wealth and status whereas Sinn, G-SHOCK, Scurfa, etc are produced with use in mind.
@curlyman7
@curlyman7 7 ай бұрын
I feel like you can argue against buying a Sinn as a tool watch. They still cost thousands of dollars and do the same thing a 200-700 watch can do. I feel like the true tool watch guys mainly buy g shocks, Hamilton khakis, Scurfa as you mentioned, iron mans, and have a much more digital based collection.

After watching this video, I can consider myself as a “tool watches are still real”-type of collector. Been heavily using my diving watch for diving despite there are lots of diving computers out there. I have my dress watch specifically used only for formal events. I’m now considering to buy GMT watch to tell different time when I’m abroad. I’ve been longing to buy the most popular Omega, Speedmaster Moonwatch, but I still can’t find any reason to use the tachymeter for “its intended purpose”. I never need to calculate car’s average speed or any of those. Anyone can help me to find a practical use of Speedmaster so I can justify buying one?

I’ve been saving for a year to make a big watch purchase. First preference goes to a PanAm GMT, if an opportunity presents itself. More realistically, I’m looking at a couple references, leaning toward the 34 OP in black, their GMT LN, or the Submariner 124060. This might just be a three watch collection to strive for, plus a grail.

I would consider myself an "Aesthetic Collector", though the main part of that has been the dial. Since I was a kid, I've always liked Citizen, Bulova, Longines, Cartier, and Omega, though budget restricts my buying! Since I started watching your channel, I've found interest in Tissot (ironic since I can't stand Swatches!), Muhle, and Junghans. Prior to watching, I had just worn my now 14-year-old Citizen Eco-Drive to death, so naturally the first watch I bought after watching and reading your stuff was a PRX!

I am finding that my watch collecting journey has led me down the path of colorful watches, either dial, strap, bezel or any combination of them. The end goal is to have at this time at least a quantity of 3 watches that are green or blue or whatever color I am currently interested in. I have no other specifications needed for a watch to spark my interest beyond color. This has provided me a ton of fun watch shopping.

I also like new watches for the fact that they are far more robust and do not need to be treated with kid gloves , in the main ! All the best Teddy from the UK!✌️

#25 Business bonding I love watches and using them for building business relationships, always selecting carefully the watch matching with the journey. Watch owners are always desperate no one is recognizing what piece they are wearing on their wrists and always enjoying small talks openings about their watch of the day, it makes them happy and this way they always remember you, that's how you became important in their books. Works both for opening and dodging discussions, great manipulative tool.

This is such a great video and spot on content! Now off I go to TRF to stoke the flames of fire with "Rolex isn't a tool watch anymore" and "Apple Watch is the modern day tool watch"

Lol blegh. It's much more comforting to think of gshock as the modern tool watch, if only because it will still work just as well in a decade or two.

I’m definitely ‘The Minimalist’. I have 6 watches, and I use all of them. My favourites are my Omega Speedmaster and Casio AE-1200WH. They are total opposite ends of the cost spectrum, but I wear / enjoy both as they serve a different purpose.

Teddy, I found your channel a few days ago and Im hooked, I would love to get your thoughts on Bulova watches... debating between a Marine Star or an Octava as my "gateway drug" into higher end watches
@speedracer2please
@speedracer2please 7 ай бұрын
I can't speak for Teddy, but I think Bulova has a great history and some really interesting models, mixed in with a ton of lower quality watches made for mass appeal. But see if you like their Hack, which they made for Allied soldiers in WW2. Or the Lunar Pilot, which was arguably the first watch to survive the moon. Or the Jetstar, it anything else with their Precisionist movement, which is the smoothest, most accurate quartz movement you can buy new. Or the "Devil Diver," their legendary dive watch with water resistance up to 666ft!

There is the “Movement” collector. This is the collector who appreciates technology and craftsmanship, and collects a watch with every type of movement. Digital, quartz, automatic, kinetic, solar, mecha-quartz, micro rotor, etc.

Funny but i did go through a phase of collecting sweeping quartz, high beat automatic, electronic accutron, seiko stepper motor, and was looking to add a spring drive, in search of sweeping seconds. 😂

Nailed it. I sometimes think of the Isaiah Berlin essay the Hedgehog and the Fox in thinking about watch collectors. Foxes jump around from one thing to the next, so for example, your box checkers, your flippers. etc are Foxes. Hedgehogs focus on one big idea. So applied to collecting, Your vintage grouches, your one brand collectors, and your minimalists, more Hedgehogs.

My collection style is based on a combination of owning iconic, different colors, mixed watch types (diver, dress, beater, etc.), diversified sizes/shapes/materials, limited editions, and all need to be wearable...at or below 20 pieces in quantity...prices range from $150 to $30,000 per piece. Not sure what this collection criteria is called, but I love being a collector!

GREAT video. I'm a Value buyer / Fanboy. Love Seiko, sorry guys, LOL. I do not have many watches, 5, and one Digital, a Samsung Frontier S3. My first watch was a Seiko, right out of boot camp in 1986. and still have it. The pride of my collection is my Dads Glycine Airman, 1961, Automatic. I have my brothers Citizen Eco Drive, my grandfather was a fan of citizen watches. I like value, but, won't just drop 500 bucks on a watch. It would really have to grap me, and some of the really high end watches don't appeal to me. Been reading through these comments and it's been kinda cool hearing other points of view. Cheers
