While I mostly agree with many points, it really is unrealistic to expect the sort of prices we paid grey for the old Seiko 5s in today’s day and age. We were happy to pay $120 for an old SNXS on a grey market dealer but what were we really getting? A terribly outdated movement that couldn’t be handwound nor hacked, a godawful bracelet that made its way to the bin 10 seconds after peeling the stickers, basically no warranty to speak of and a mismatched case and bracelet. And we were happy to part with that money! Of course the retail price on these new releases is excessive, they are just released after all, but the watch has been improved and this has a cost, especially when taking into account warranties, which is something that tends to fall by the wayside when reviewing watches. Mark’s video on the issue was a real eye opener.
@taham334 ай бұрын
And now, you can spend three fiddy hundred pounds for a watch with a terribly outdated movement, a godawful bracelet that will make its way to the bin ten minutes after peeling the stickers, a pitiful warranty (the only good thing about the nh3X movement is that you don't need a warranty, but still) and a mismateched case and bracelet. Add a dive style bezel to add a little bit of randomness with the alignment and you got yourself a DEAL

After seeing these new models in person it felt underwhelming almost. For over £300 I would've expected a lot more. The value to be had with the older models is still by far the best selling point for me, They're stylish, versatile, and easily repairable. Something about the new design just doesn't click for me. Seiko's present such poor value for money in the modern watch market, it's unreal. I think a lot of people in this space have completely forgotten what made them so appealling in the first place: 1) They were cheap. 2) They were decent quality. We've now reached a point where Chinese watches can be had for way under 100 quid with comparable case finishing to a Seiko in the 200 or even 300 range, and if you're willing to spend the same amount of money as you would on one of these Seiko's, you could get something way more interesting with a better movement and finishing from any number of microbrands. They're good watches, but they just don't make sense anymore from a value POV and I don't get why people keep buying them these days.

Well, you could say they did this before adopting the model name instead of just the calibre name and case number. Just look at the 7009-3040 versus the SNXS79. As far as I'm concerned, I don't like glass backs as it was the steel backs that held the information that was important to collectors and paint on glass is just not as durable as engravings in stainless steel (yes I know there are sometimes engavings in the bezel for the glass back), and I hate the trend to dinnerplate sized watches though that fortunstely seems to be petering out. Having the seconds hacking feature is great, that was something that they used to always intentionally leave out of the Seiko 5 line though there was unofficial ways of getting the seconds hand to move backwards by trying to set the time back in time which the Seiko manuals advise against. It is time for them to move to sapphire coated glass though. Hardplex may have been better than the mineral glass that was common when it was untroduced but everyone has sapphie now and with that chambered cut, modding with a third party sapphire crystal though possible (you can either force a straight cut 2mm crystal or a 1.5 mm crystal in to replace the chambered 1.7mm crystal), is not a perfect fit.

Yup. You buy them, wear them, run the movement into the ground and then simply buy a new cheap watch 10 or 15 years later. That is why these price increases don't make sense (apart from inflation). They're not quality watches. And people pretend like there is this huge difference between 7s and 4R movements but at the same time deny that there is a huge difference between mineral and sapphire. All while Seiko are refusing to fit them with good bracelets which they can easily source from China where they already do most of their production anyway. Nothing can make a watch worth it's price or more like a proper bracelet. Solid links, screws, quick release, milled clasp and on the fly adjustment. And they are dirt cheap in China.

Ohhh ya thats why you can go to any mod site and get a sapphire crystal for $20-$40 or even cheaper of shopped over sea. So if they sell them for that cheap and make a good profit from them that means they are getting then cheap. Seiko could do it even cheaper so whats the actual truth on why they dont use it?

Glad you pointed out the triple naming on the website, it actually feels out of touch as I think it's the same group they try to approach with these names. I do not know where the price is going to land however I still think anything between 250-300eu there would be a market by value on just realistically adding inflation / the movement / the case. I'm just more in for that action from Citizen right now having two great small second everyday options out there (Tsuyosa small seconds & the new titanium small seconds) About your wife, assume it's the faux patina markers. Generally when people like a watch yet can't describe why, its the beige from the patina or a well finished watch (you just don't know how crisp metal can be before you see it with your own eyes), some assumptions here but where would we be without them! Thanks Ben!

I have 18 Seiko watches and just added two of this model to my collection, blue and silver (more champagne to my eye) and have zero regrets on my purchase. First, I'm in the U.S. and bought both watches for just under $300 each from two different sellers, so the price is significantly less than the stated one and my satisfaction is based on a watch that cost the lower amount. In terms of old versus new, I'd never own a non-hacking watch, so at any price the older watch was a non-starter for me. The lack of sapphire is always brought up about Seiko, and not one of my dozen and a half other Seikos has a single blemish in the crystal, so maybe this is not much of a big deal for basic wear in the usual day-to-day functions. I'm glad Seiko brought these updates out and don't feel "taken in" by the company.

I paid only the Aussie equivalent of £210 for the new one, so I think for the upgrades and different vibe being black dial with those cream accents, it was a good deal. Also the new one looks killer on a black leather strap!

Hmm, I have full confidence in Seiko!❤ And if they need to increase the price then I guess that it is really something they need to do.. Let me explain my view point: That is making me worried about the world currency and inflation issues instead than Seiko is milking us! That we have a big issue with our fiat currencies that is soon not worth anything. So I think that the greater issue is not Seiko it is more our currency that spirals down and is diminishing in value!😢 Or in another way to say it: If Seiko were priced in Bitcoin (satoshis) currency instead. Then for example then we would have a price cut (!) in the price tag of the amount of Bitcoin that the watch costs from Seiko! When Bitcoin value goes up and less is needed to buy the same watch and Seiko still get what they need..😅 The totally opposite to what is happening to fiat currency that by default ALWAYS go down in value more or less speed that is called inflation and faster decline is hyper inflation..😢

Just bought a Seiko snke 61 for 113, all of the cheap stuff, folded links, 7s26, hardlex, I am kind of charmed by it to be honest.

I think it looks great. It reminds me of the Orient Star Classic.

I think it looks great. And it is a sub 38mm. The comparison should not be the old price but rather what you have to pay elsewhere. Any other brand big or micro charges way more for vintage look, feel and sizing. Exceptions are Islander and Ali Express. Islanders become pricey when you ship them to Europe and Ali Express is a world I'm not interested in. In that competition clear win for Seiko.

I haven't bought a Seiko at retail in so long. Seiko have absolutely executed the main thing that kept them relevant in my eyes: value for money. I always consider microbrands over Seiko these days.

I'd perhaps consider, the champagne/beige variant, as it could perhaps make a half decent Datejust 36 alternative, and I really like a day/date function, but the lack of a sapphire crystal at this price point is truly criminal!!?

Seiko might not be trying to draw a connection between the SNSX87 etc and the recently discontinued SNXS 79 etc - I actually think its actually Seiko doing a re-release of the vintage 6619-8230 - when you look at the Seiko SNXS87 it's really a re-release of the Seiko 6619-8230 from the 60's.

I think it’s a really beautiful watch, at $200 I think this would sell like crazy. Too bad Seiko has no clue what we want anymore. Not surprised Seiko is still using folded links that look solid as every new Seiko five has a bracelet like that.

I love Seiko watches. I think this New "SNXS" is a great improvement. I like its design and i think it's the perfect "vintage" watch for a young man. I tried micro brands but it's not for me, i think these watches doesn't have the same flavour as traditional brands like Seiko.

To be fair over the last few years, I've leaned more towards microbrands using Seiko movements than towards affordable Seiko models. The microbrands use similar movements, but the rest of the specs are usually better and they are cheaper! Nicer dials, better bracelets, sapphire crystals, etc... I'm not precious about the brand name. Give me the nicer watch with the better spec.

I'm on your wife's side with this one in terms of looks: The SRPK is gorgeous while the original didn't do anything for me. I do prefer less flashy designs. Shame about the Seiko nonsense surrounding it.

The problem is people are looking at a bunch of old stock caliber 7S26 watches that had been on the market for a very long time and think that the next generation of watches with caliber 4R36 and 6R36 and other new movements should cost exactly the same at a time when the watch market is booming again.

Just bought this for £270 brand new. This watch just speaks to me in terms of dial design even though it’s nothing special… it has character through small details such as the orange seconds hand, the fauxtina lume etc… gives a retro vibe. The last gen is much more stale and boring albeit being popular imo. Bens wife has a good opinion!!
@TugboatBillSimpson4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video, Ben. Always enjoy your content. I have to say though, I don't think Rolex at all when I look at that watch. Maybe the masses who don't know anything besides what marketers shove into their face see it that way though. Thank God I don't understand. LOL
@allegedkurd4 ай бұрын
So it's watch for the same retail price inflation-adjusted. The very informative Long Island watch video on Seiko pricing aside, I would really like to see at least a sapphire crystal, as well as a better bracelet, but Seiko can't even get the latter correct on their higher-end watches

I do like these reissues, but the value of “new” Seiko releases seem to steadily go down. I think they are willing to lose some enthusiasts to gain more people who are just looking for a “great looking watch.” Thanks for your take on the watches!

while 18mm lug width is bad, it's better than the 19mm on the original "not badly made watch" - cmon, let's see the chapter ring alignment lol

The watch case is much improved, the movement is improved, the dial is improved including the lume, the hands finishing is much improved, the bracelet is much improved, the size is updated. The MSRP is not that much higher than SNXS, these new watches will sell for much lower in the near future, check put the srpg field watches you can get them any day brand new for around $150. The 5KXes at a bit around $250 are still way cheaper than SKX007 MSRP of $485.

Orient is new seiko with prices they are offering that's what i think
@JessicaKStark4 ай бұрын
This is kinda ridiculous honestly. Looking at US amazon right now, the SRPK87 is 300 USD. The same price that I paid for my SNJ025 'Arnie' 18 months ago. Admittedly the prices on those have also gone up, but when I went to check the Arnie pricing, in the second row down you have a Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive for 200 USD. Heimdallr and Steeldive continue to make better Seikos for the money than actual Seiko does in terms of their classic dive watches, it seems.
@d3xmeister4 ай бұрын
Please, Heimdallr and Steeldive are way worse than any Seiko I had. I have both. The cases are finished with an axe, the sapphire crystals are of the worst wuality poasible (transmission), the crown, bezels, everything that moves makes a grinding noise, and all kind of little “touches” that just scream “cheap Chinese clones here !” I have a Turtle Steeldive because I wanted to use its case for a mod (seemed rounder than other cases which I liked) and the Heimdallr is a MM300 homage made from Titanium that I also wanted to mod. Both were to poor quality to use their parts)

The fact that they changed the snk800 series so much instead of keeping it's looks while fixing it's shortcomings will forever be a gripe I have with them. Also the prices are just another level of being mentally challenged.
@cougarbatterieАй бұрын
I'm sorry Ben, but I must disagree with you with your review. I bought this same watch, same color and it's worth every penny. I got 10% off so I paid around 350€ here in France. The finishing of the watch is extremely well made, the indices are beautiful, the upgrade of the movement and the bracelet match well with the case and very nice looking. The dial is beautiful with this deep dark blue and raised creamy chaptering. An upgrade to a 100m water resistant. Overall, a very well balanced watch. For all these upgrades, isn't it worth the bump in price. Don't forget you're paying also the price of the newest released model. Of course in a couple of years, prices will go down like the moonswatch did when the hype settled down. Heck, it's a Seiko and it will resell very easily whenever you get bored with it.

7:22 they are in fact solid links. the seam you see is not as a result of the links are folded. If you look close you can see the side links actually form an H shape and are attached to the middle link from the back and that's why you see the seam.

I am not an expert and might be wrong but as I understand it, Seiko have killed or almost killed the Gray market. They are also vacating the affordable watch market........ I recently bought an SPB237 (Willard) for £1,120!!! And yes, is exstorsionate.... and yes I love the watch.... Seiko are a funny brand...... the community seems to forgive them for everything.... me included

If vloggers didn't hype up the brand the last 15 years we'd still be enjoying ISO certified 200M SKX divers at $150 a pop. Back then people suggested Seiko underpriced their watches. Now that Seiko jacked it up, people still complain their watches to be overpriced. Be careful what you wish for.
@drunksupportcharacter4 ай бұрын
On the face of it, people will pay regardless, its nice overall, it LOOKS like they did a bit of work considering the case is slimmer, but man, they deliberately dont put sapphire on these to screw you over, imagine if it was £400 with sapphire, simply more sales will happen because with watches, when someone wants it, they want it. As for myself, i would like it, but just if i dont feel like i get a complete package relative to the price, im less inclined to get it at all.

0:44 For someone who used to run a fashion channel you certainly have a peculiar taste in glasses. With regard to Seiko... if they had upped their specs and quality, I might not have minded the price hike too much but they didn't. I guess it's microbrands for me from now on. In fact, the only reason to buy a Seiko these days is to not get your arm chopped off by machete wielding watch robbers on your sightseeing trip to London.
