I had wanted a Panerai for a long time and finally picked up the 1312 a few months ago. One of the best things about this brand is the recognizability you mentioned, the community, and the versatility. The strap change system is great, I love not having to use a spring bar tool, and being able to change straps easily and often without the fear of scratching the case. I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist, I went to the store looking for a 42mm model, and found the 44mm 1312 wore smaller than the dimensions. Last week I purchased the 47mm 1389 Submersible, and although at the top end of what I could get away with on my wrist, I am really impressed at the quality of this watch. Great video on it, I am starting to see more content out there about the brand, and I am hoping they make a big comeback.

From all my watches including Rolex and Omega, I find myself always going back to my Panerai very often , every brand has their ups and downs , so weather some people love them and others don’t , as long as having one makes you happy , so who cares what others think . 😀😀

Nicely done Teddy. I am a Panerai collector, having six of them spread across the model range. I also own Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Breitling pieces. Panerai have just released 40mm Luminor pieces and will be phasing out the 42mm. They will then offer 47mm, 44mm, 40mm and 38mm models which can offer something for every wrist size or preference. One of the more fun aspects to Panerai collecting , that you did not mention, is the variety of watch bands and their easy interchangeability. Panerai has introduced an “Easy change system” of sorts to most of their models making switching up the look of your watch very simple. Being able to change the look of your watch in numerous ways makes it much more wearable.

The "Easy change system" many brands are adopting this method such as Nomos or even Cartier which you can swap without needing a tool. It's great to know Panerai is going the same route!

I acquired my first Panerai last year after lusting over them for years. It is coincidentally the P 1312 and it’s very quickly became one of my favorite watches. Besides for the aesthetics the timekeeping is flawless which is something that means a lot to me when I’m paying a lot of money for a watch. I’m happy to have found your channel here on KZbin and I have subscribed and look forward to hearing more about Panerai and other high end watches that you may be expert in. I had it on my wrist the last time I went to see my primary physician and she must’ve been looking at it while taking my blood pressure because she remembered to ask me what my watch was but forgot to record my blood pressure..

I have two Panerai and I love them. The first one is the iconic manual 8 days Luminor Marina sandwich dial. I feel extremely lucky to have one that I feel represents Panerai like no other. And I agree with you. I feel Panerai is limiting itself and paneristi with limited edition watches. They should have one Luminor, one sumersible and one radiomir that will always be available. I think everyone deserves an iconic Panerai.

For me Panerai has always been a grail since I got into this hobby, finally after 12 years I was able to afford one and I'm really happy with it. It's kind of a watch that could easily become a heirloom that you can pass on to the next generation. Due to its chunky and straightforward build it will look great even after years of heavy use. Most other luxury watches wont look that great after a couple years of use when the initial shine is worn of. When I spend a significant amount of my hard earned money on a wrist watch, this kind of longevity appeals to me and I think I'm not alone in this line of thinking.

I’m a Panerai wearer. I would never claim the brand is perfect, and would tend to say their watches are a tad overpriced. But especially career dependent, it is a watch choice that really works. I work in the world of firearms and that community loves Panerai. My submersible has held up well. Doesn’t keep perfect time, but I dig it

Am new to Panerai, and your point about them having too many models with only slight differences is TRUE! I got confused looking at their website. Even worse is that now some models have the sandwich dial and others do not, and I cannot tell clearly from photos, and their description does not specify.

I have four Panerai and love them (55, 112, 1024, & 372),. I have a lot of different brands, and some may be better "watches", but Panerai has a charm and a warmth that others don't. I prefer older, simpler models to the more modern designs. Also, let's not forget the joy of strap collecting!

While visiting a Panerai Boutique I somehow became convinced that a 42mm GMT was the watch for me. I bought it and wore nothing else for several days, but soon realised the watch was simply too big for me. Solid video Teddy. I have to disagree with you about your point on wearability. The Radiomir is a far more wearable watch than the Luminor. When equipped with the iconic wire lugs, they almost vanish and the watch wears similar to it's case width, excluding the crown obviously. Many people who are afraid of sizing seem to forget this fact. For example, the 45mm PAM 380 is a classic and elegant sausage dial watch. It measures 51mm lug to lug which on my 7.5 inch wrist fits well. In fact due to the nature of the lugs, it can easily double as a dress watch. That along with the 13mm case thickness and well, I think that is a wonderful entry Panerai for the hesitant buyer. However, overall, I do agree that these watches are very controversial and most certainly suit a bigger wrist. I am happy to have "the wrist" as I truly do love the watches made by Panerai. I also agree with your comment regarding the overwhelming reissues and similar models. To me, Panerai excels when they innovate with new materials, dial variations and when keep it simple (2 hand/3 hand). The high complication pieces are the ones that seem to be forgettable to me. Overall, I think they deserve respect for making a truly iconic case and dial layout. Most other watch brands simply imitate eachother and I find them to be quite lackluster. Cartier is another iconic brand that comes to mind and they offer delightful products if you are willing to climb up the horological/financial ladder. This hobby is about art. I am steadfast about this opinion. Many of us can go on about movement complexities and horological significance, but at the end of the day, that's all hogwash. We are energy. We are emotions wrapped in a skin suit. When we look at a watch, we visualize the watch. This makes me agree with your points about Panerai having many things going for them. Excited to see what the brand does in the present. Maybe you should become the CEO. I like your fan involvement ideas. Cheers.

Great vid. I love my PAM723 (44mm and rare w/bracelet). Really like what the brand is doing right now, adapting and adjusting the designs by reducing dimensions and making new models more wearable (38-42mm), for more people. Medium sized watches are on-trend right. Panerai cushion cases are gorgeous designs and the crown guard on the Luminors are unique & cool to the brand. Plus no other brand wears different straps better than PAMs. The one thing I’m not thrilled to see is the VERY low 30 meters water resistance on the new 38mm Due’s. Not a good decision to not at least make 100m and far off the brands legacy and heritage.

30m is what fake Chinese watches from Alibaba offer. What an absolute joke. The lever crown had a very specific function and made for the the excellent watertight performance. The history of Panerai is certainly not about high horology and polished movements and whatnot. And for military-descended watches to not have a seconds-hacking feature is downright criminal

@@michaelkalb2896 yes Panerai and Ferrari are both Italian breed brand; that’s all they have in common. It also hurts to notice there are several shady things going on in marketing the brand. In general there is a lot of bs going on in the watch world. Anything to sell watches. Those were the negatives. The positives: Since the first day I ever saw a PAM0051 I fell in love with the brand. I really like the white dial but the 3,6,9,12 design spoke to me as well. Picked up my second panerai this week, a radiomir base. Very happy with it, im a tall guy with big wrists, so the 45mm case works great for me, and i can dress it up or down with different straps. Hopefully this will be with me for years to come!

I have owned a PAM655 for a few years now and it is one of my favorite watches. At 42mm with the cushion case it is very wearable and incredibly comfortable. Only 11mm thick and I often pick it out to wear over my Rolex, Seiko and others. I have no interest in their larger watches though. The 655 is an incredible watch and I absolutely love it.

Count me as a fan! I am a larger wristed type, so the sizing of the Panerai range definitely works for me. I have a couple in the collection at present (685 & 524), with another half dozen on the "watches under consideration" list. I think they represent great value in the watch space!

Update... I swear the damn things breed at night when I'm not looking (if only!). There are now 8 Panerai in the collection, with a few others having come and gone since I wrote the above comment. A few really cool ones worth noting... the PAM 190 with the JLC movement... PAM 516 equation of time.. PAM 662 with the unique dial color. There are a couple of others on the horizon and then I might consider the Panerai end of the collection done. Also, Teddy mentions that many brands have their one iconic watch that really IS the brand. True. How many other AP's beyond the RO can most people identify? How then is it fair criticism of Panerai for having so many watches that look so similar? Isn't it actually an improvement on so many other brands that have the one iconic watch? Panerai has many iconic watches.

Great video. I agree with all your points. The big issue for me is size. I have a 7.25 inch wrist but I still won't own a watch over 42mm. They just look cartoonish after that, IMO. So, most models are off the table. I love the design aesthetic of the brand, though so I got a PAM574...Perfect size for me and an absolute strap monster. The only model I would own.

As a watch enthusiast, although active one for only a couple of years, Panerai is one of the very few luxury brands I really like very much. Panerai is quitessencially italian. The shape of the case, the dials, the measures, are really such wonderful ingredients for a very distinguishly product. And THAT is the very essence of Panerai: those are watches intstantly recognizable.

🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾Awesome review Mr B, I’m a proud owner of a Pam 359 which I’ve had for just under 8 months now which I love. Why did I go with the Pam 359? because it checked off mostly everything in a Panerai I was looking for, the sandwich dial, the thick 1940’s polished cushion case style, the exhibition case back and as small as it seems the TM & REG on the crown guard. The versatility that it has with straps are crazy which also really appealed to me. The Pam 359 is not your typical Panerai where it has all the numerals indicators on the dial, which it’s in a small class of all there pieces that do, which kind of makes it unique in the brand. I don’t consider myself a Paneristi yet not until I own a second piece, which I’m pretty sure I’ll be going after a Radiomir next, either a California dial or the Accaio with that crazy yellow/brown burnt dial🤤😍🤤, but we’ll see. Awesome review again my Friend, Happy Holidays to you and yours. 🙏🏾😌Be Safe;-).

I had a Pam00048, probably one of the most entry level Panerai's out there. Sold it, had a number of other pieces , Pelagos, Sub's etc, I got more compliments on my Panerai hands down, I longed for another for 4 years and have recently purchased a Luminor Carbotech ref Pam01661 and a 1950 8 day gmt, let me tell you I will have them forever🙌🏼 I have big wrists and yes, they are not for everyone. But if you have the wrist size, there isn't much as satisfying than a Panerai on the wrist...they still have that....Italian flare about them👌🏻

Agree 100% - I'm not a 'Paneristi' but this brand has nearly everything: a cool history, a unique and recognizable design language, brand recognition. I think it'll come back. When it does they might also want to 'pull a Rolex' and make them difficult to get. The main reason for Panerai hate at the end of the day seems to be the feeling that the brand is 'played out'.

My favorite watch brand. I didn't know about them until 2016. I was browsing the internet while bored at work looking for a black watch and saw the 441. I was like omg what is this. Looked them up and read everything about the brand. Went to a store and the 422 cought my eye. Sold every watch I own and went back and bought it a year later. Couple years after I bought the 932. Wear them both all the time and love em to death.

Panerai's design is distinctive, that's for sure. When I became heavily interested in watches around the early 2000's it surely was a out there in the center stage, I have a small wrist and they also where more coveted by the "bling" kind of person, also I come from a more classic watch history, grew up with Tag Heuer and Swatch, also a huge classic car fan mainly Porsche, so my attention was drawn more to brands like IWC and Heuer, where you can also find great design and aesthetics but more relatable perhaps to my hobbies and interests. Nevertheless I think Panerai has a very cool history and design language, they have big potential to dial in more and create very cool timepieces.

Teddy, kudos to your channel and specifically to this great video on Panerai. Like a number of the other commentators. I too have had visions of owning one for more than a decade. I got bitten by the watch collecting bug back when I was about 10 years old, putting all I had into a Bulova Marine Star. A huge investment for a kid that age. Ever since then I have been drawn to everything around a dive style watch. About 5 years ago I jumped into a Panzara Atlantic 45 which for me gave me a taste of the panerai size, shape and style. Every time I shop for a new watch, I pass by the Panerai shop/booth and wonder about making the purchase. Recently, I was able to purchase a Rolex SD43 from the AD. It's been on the wrist about 4 months and while I really enjoy it I do think it's got a very similar look which simply doesn't stand out. I've got my eyes set on a Pam 1312 / 1313 right now and your video has helped me get to a decision. Keep up the great content!

I love the panerai 1950’s case. The 44mm is simple, beautiful and balances on my 9” wrist. A lot of the watch commentators seem to have small (6.5”) wrists and criticize Panerai for being large; but those of us who have 7.5 - 9.5” wrists, find a Panerai is perfect.

I've tried on quite a few Panerai and I've been close to buying one. Unfortunately I just don't think they are worth the money. Its difficult to chose a Panerai watch over say an Omega Seamaster. It just doesn't make sense to pay more for a Panerai than an Omega or even some Tudors. The only other issue I have is that I fear it would be difficult to sell if I ever wanted too in the future. The market for watches sized 44mm on average and above is small. Plus, although I enjoy the design, some people prefer a more standard watch design. If Panerai could lower prices by 30-40% at retail and made more watches in the 42mm size with a thinner profile, I think they'd kill it.

I love the Panerai design especially the Luminor. I had a Sub and sold it with the intention of buying a Pam, but a house purchase soaked up the money. I'm not really a dive watch fan anymore but the Pam is one I definitely want. The Sub just looks like any generic diver, but the Pam's look fantastic.

I’m a big fan of Panerai. They’re a great option for someone who wants something outside of the norm. They have a model for almost everyone and (if you’re ok with buying pre owned) they offer a lot of watch for the money. That having been said, fakes are a serious issue and I’d be wary buying pre owned from anyone that isn’t a legit dealer

Lots of people buy luxury watches as investment. But majority of people buy Panerai because they love it. So in a way Panerai has a fan club loyalists that other brands don’t. Plus i stop at a coffee shop every morning that is near a big office building and look at all the employees there waiting for coffee, i can say that i stand proud when all of them are wearing Rolex and my watch stands out just because its a Panerai. Rolex in a way hyped their own watches so much that now i see it more than i ever saw Casios on wrists it became very common.

They're a fantastic watch and, like Teddy said, have their own unique design that you can spot from across the room. The fact he brought up Patek, AP, and Rolex in that same point is a testament to their designs. But definitely not worth buying investment-wise without a deep discount.

Yep, I was obsessed with the Panerai Design just over a decade ago. I LOVED the simple 'arabic' numerals and thought the 'pancake' dial construction was just gorgeous. Only trouble is at the time basically ALL Panerai models still used modified ETA movements, and mostly traded between $4k-$10k depending on it being a 'basic' Luminor, or a fancy 'Radiomir'. 'LUCKY' for me the 44mm+ case size looked comically large on my tiny wrists (even during the huge watch face rage happening at the time). And eventually I came to my senses and bought a HAMILTON KHAKI KING instead. Which is a watch that looks similar, used nearly the same Swiss Made automatic movement, and cost $500 rather than $5000 :) Not sure if those old 'PAM 000' models still hold their msrp value, but I still have the Hamilton, and if my model was good enough for House (Hugh Laurie's personal watch also), then it was good enough for me ;)

Great synopsis of the brand. I agree that the PAM community (Risti) had so much influence worldwide. They started even before the internet craze. The in-person get togethers were popular. The community got me into watch collecting in general and broader exposure to other brands. I bought my first Panerai in 2007 and then maintained my passion for this brand through the “straps” for my PAM233 for a few years. Although I don’t wear it anymore, it has great sentimental value to me and I will eventually pass it down to my son. Thanks for a great video

Although I love panerai watches a lot of the older models with the manual wind are faked and really good fakes too that are hard to tell from real ones for that reason I stay away from certain models also feel the carbon fiber models should be a lot less money and the ones to get in my humble opinion are the titanium chronograph with the zenith movements and newer in-house automatics in steel with a clear back .
