This Nivada Grenchen keeps popping up in my radar, can't escape it, I think I'm hooked. I really like its old-school looks -- incredibly true to the original -- and I appreciate the original designer's audacity in jamming together three different watch types into one do-it-all. Also thankful for the size -- when I first saw it I would have guessed that it would be far too big for my 17cm wrist, but not so, especially with the manual wind being slightly thinner. Hoping to get one on the wrist at NYC's Windup Watch Fair in October.

@@calebnewton_ It was in my radar during many month and finally I bought a Super Antarctic green lume. I'm not disappointed! The watch is beautiful, works perfectly. You really have the feeling you wear something much more expensive when you have it on the wrist. For me this is a superb watch, well done Nivada (and the lume is very powerful on this model)

Really like the Excelsior Park! I picked up that the guy responsible for these also had a hand in relaunching Vulcain. I have a Vulcain Meteor III from the 60s I bought a while back. In the shipping from Switzerland, something appears to have happened and it's not running correctly, but it was in such beautiful condition that I decided to keep it and get it repaired. The movement was an ETA so I'm crossing my fingers it can be fix (or an ETA movement can be found to replace it if necessary).

Excelsior Park rings the same bell as Baltic and Habring but still does it its own, very elegant way. And NG is really in the domain of its own. Both watches are great additions to any collection, especially at a price point. And I really like this path of our little useless watch hobby: dig and find something really interesting instead of going default path most of the times.

Nice to hear your transparent reviews on some more niche brands - if you can do more of these from time to time, then I'm sure the community would welcome the change. I would consider micro-brands like VERTEX (Revival of a British watch with bags of history), AIRAIN (French Type-20 redition) and the LEBOIS & CO CoLAB Heritage Chronograph ... both coming out of a company in the Netherlands.

I don't think they'd be considered unknown brands. You think about the Valjoux 72 and how so many look at it as some sort of pinnacle in terms of chronograph movements. But honestly, it's another off-the-shelf movement. The Daytona is the only reason anyone ever really thinks about it. The Excelsior Park movement was a much more refined movement than the 72. But because Rolex isn't attached to it, people don't think about it.

Well, up until the 70's watch company were mostly assembler that acquired parts from third companies so many brands will have very similar models as they shared suppliers. For example the famous Patek chronograph 1463 "Tasti Tondi" shares the same cases and dial with watches sold by Movado or Mido (that also now share the same nickname). Excelsior Park is known for making in the 40's and 50's its EP 4 caliber that was housed in their own models but also supplied to Zenith and others.

So... Part 3/3 here... so I am back to the dilemma... what to get :)... Some time passes by.. and then.. I see the brand Invicta... They remind me of.. BVLGARY.. just strictly design/dress based watches - most of them... with nice quartz movements by.. SII - Seiko Instruments :) !! which I applaud them for... and I remember maybe 10-15 years ago.. I saw a huge but nice chronograph.. invicta... and it happens to say Russian DIver on it... I researched it.. and the true story goes.. that in 1959... USSR (CCCP) couldn't make diver watches for their divers.. and I believe Invicta got the contract and created a few... ANd what happened since.. is amazing... They became very popular... and many watches/models were created based on them.. even chronographs... They all say: IMF CCCP - for the name of Soviet Navy is direct translation... Some Swiss movent diving pieces even have a saying on back 'Come Hell or High Water... ' :).. Those Navy folks are rather particular... :)... So... I Amazoned a chronograph.. unfortunately, it wasnt swiss... yet quartz.. which was fine.. since it was a gorgeous timepiece... however.. the super big CROWN.. You can probably put a quarter egg in it :).. oh... and it screws to the case.. all divers watches of Invicta do - and have a very nifty mechanism to do it - please check it out.. Rolex should check it out... they can learn some from Invicta... a thing or two re. the boring and outdated screw crown that they build for couple of Centuries now :).. the only issue with gorgeous Invicta crown was.. that unfortunately it was TOO BIG.. and anytime I'd bend my wrist.. it would scratch my hand from the top.. and unfortunately I had to return the watch.. althugh when I first seen it.. 15 years ago.. I could NOT take my eyes off it !! so then.. what watch should I get.. I knew I want it Russian 1959 Diver one.. FOR SURE.. it even include it the emblem of russian Nave.. which is half of the divers suit with old metal helmet... which I didnt know about.. Again.. to make the long story short :)... GOD helped me on this one...:)... I start searching for ALL russian diver... and... VOLA.. I find the piece that I am exstatic about.... Unfortunately.. it ened production like in 2011.... :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( What to do ?! So disappointing.. it was one of the more gorgeous Diver pieces I had ever seen !!! MSRP was $495.. pricy.. for that time.. yet they probably went for $200-250... yet.. they had significance... Imagine Rolex... their ads are ZERO about watches.. but 99% of someone accomplishment.. and 1% thaty they were or used Rolex in it... which I doubt.. since whom would scratch that Rolex of theirs :).. in harsh enviroments especially... Well... low and behold... I decide to search the Web... and before getting to eBay... the Fate takes me to... East Coast... where I find a small site.... with the NEW WATCH THAT I WANT !!! I fell almost off the chair... and get this... the price.. wasnt 250.. or even 200... not even 150.. nor 100.. it was... $75... They had not 1... but EIGHT of them... all new.. all from 2011.. collecting dust... I bought one... and then.................... As anyone remembers Columbo... Carsini Vineries epizode.. with remarkable John Pleasance :).. when buying $5,000 bottle of vintage wine he said.. and I quote... "..My Dear Karen (secretary with Him).. its not that I could affort or need to acquire this rare, expensive, exquisite bottle of vintage one... (it was huge size.. he held it packed like a baby in diapers :)..) - I JUST DONT WANT FOR ANYONE ELSE TO HAVE IT :))))))))..... Since those 8 precious babys... were sitting somewhere... awaiting their Fate... dusty.. and sort of... 'unwanted'.. since so many years went by.... And since... I purely and decided for certain.. that I did NOT want anyone else to have them... so I bought ALL OF THEM at that price... and gave as presents to my family and friends :)... !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did also find 1 fancy model with gold plated case and blue dial... so I left this one and all black models for me... In fact just a few weeks ago.. I found blue and black bracelets for them... Whats ironic... Producer Michal and Jacob of J&Co met on J's plane... and the bracelet that was made for Michael was EXACTLY THE SAME AS MINE :)... only that one was gold.. but of course :).. and mine in black steal.. but it wasnt painted.. they used a process to bond the black material on steel... Quality bracelet I must say... 5 rows of little links... looks good on both watches.. Since their original straps.. are thick and nice.. but after a while... U need to replace them... Anyone interested or curious.. check the model out: Invicta 22015 Men's Russian Diver Quartz Black Leather Strap Black Dial Watch (Black Steel) Invicta 22010 Men's Russian Diver Quartz Blue Leather Strap Blue Dial Watch (Gold plated) Ohhh... and the crown... nifty mechanism on both... but buth crowns are at 4pm marker :)... so does NOT press on Your wrist - I realized thats why most Seiko divers had it also at 4pm... didn't realize it before.. since there was no issue to my wrist :)).... So... the point... Its all about MEANING & INTERPRETATION... Above watches make me remember and reminisce about my Father In Law.... who past away.. a while back.. yet was a great guy.. who spent 10 years on a ... Submarine.... hence... light and precious Memory of Him.. are in these watches... ohhhhh...and guess what... they even put A MOVING ANCHOR ON ALL MODELS ABOVE... AS A SECONDS HAND :)))))))... HOW COOL IS THAT :)))))))))))) ?!?!?!?!?!? Teddy.. please dont laugh at Invicta... With Seiko movement.. they may last as long as those higher priced brands... and with less expensive maintenance.... Aren't You GLAD I did NOT service Rolex.... - Look how much JOY and MEANING I GOT IN RETURN.... Please make an epizode re. watches and MEANING behind them... I bet they will be just as fascinating... as epizodes re. regular watchs.. (YAWN :)))))...) if not more :)))... Of course I say this in owning Sub for 30 years :)... it was a present from my X... and of course.. it means less now.. for obvious reasons :).... HOpe You Guys enjoyed the story... as much as I loved writing it.. :)...

I bought a Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic a few months ago to be my everyday "beater" watch, since it sort of looks like an Explorer. After receiving it, I decided it will not have any scratches if I can help it.

I too purchased the Super Antarctic in the white lumed version for the Explorer look. Which lume version did you get?

@@millersciencesms762 Yellow. I second guessed my decision shortly after getting the watch. I wasn't completely in love with the yellow lume and brown strap combo I wore. But once I swapped out the brown strap for a black one, it felt more appropriate.

@@peproni379 I have received two replacement watches because of mismatched lume on the hands versus the indices, and crown issues. The third one still has the same issues. 😮 And on the wrong strap. Customer support is completely unacceptable, along with QC and fulfilment. I won't buy anything more from them.
