How does a fact become a misconception? Dig into the world of misinformation to see how facts can become distorted and misleading.
--
In 1901, David Hänig published research that led to what we know today as the taste map: an illustration that divides the tongue into four separate areas. It has since been published in textbooks and newspapers. There is just one problem: the map is wrong. So how do misconceptions like this spread, and what makes a fake fact so easy to believe? Joseph Isaac dives into the world of misinformation.

@@snowylilac371 actually you might want to stray away from 7 as well. Notice how ted, Kurt E. Clothier, and you, used 7 as a "random" number? 7 seems more random because its prime, its not in the middle between 1-10, but also not one less than ten or one more than ten. So it seems random, but conciously avoid using too many 7s

For a huge concentration of mistruths look up: political campaigns and psychology... One big mistruth is the calorie in - calorie out model on losing weight made popular by coca-cola et al. I thought maybe I did something wrong and some sugar fell on front side of the tongue. I tried it many times but every time I could taste it. my guess is because people need to confirm their thoughts and get a ‘nod’ on their thoughts, so they feel they do the right thing. and sometimes the information is just not enough, and people are feeling sad that they can’t confirm what other people are trying to confirm, so they give a quick possibility to them, but when they gave it, people who receive the input are impatient and taking the info as fact rather than a possibility, and for them the info is credible (even though it’s not), and they spread the info as fact to other people, and it spreads. and misinformation getting bigger. and social media take parts in spreading it a step further, because people could easily inform more misinformation like they could easily inform valid information. gotta come back to see if my prediction is correct. edit: so it was about tongue, I got some things right. the media of misinformation turned out to be news and tv (not social media), and turned out umami was the fifth taste. and it mentions a healthy skepticism when it comes to understanding new things which is kinda relate to how I had skepticism about my prediction/guess as it could be correct or not.

This just reinforces my conviction to never trust sources that based their information on something written in a language that is not their own. Many things get lost in translation. One of the reasons why I keep on learning new languages is to finally check the original sources for the things I have learned in school. Right now, I have just been reading 'The Art of War' in Chinese and I have to say that the original source is more fun and a lot simpler. The English version actually contains a lot of interpretation that does not exist in the original text.

Speaking of misconceptions, you said "comprised of" in this video. The simplification of "composed of" and "comprised" into synonyms is a good illustration of the points made above. The words are related but describe two distinct cases: The parts COMPRISE the whole. The whole is COMPOSED OF the parts. Easy litmus test: If you hear "of" after "comprised," it's being used wrong.

I always interpreted the tongue map as where the tastes are felt most intensely because I was never even taught the concept at school. I first learned in college that gustatory buds, which are alllll over the tongue’s surface, absorb chemicals in food and communicate with the brain to interpret the flavor. THEN as I was researching on my own, when I observed the map for the first time (didn’t read about it, sometimes I just search for diagrams on google images to study) it was pretty obvious what Hänig meant. It’s a shame that first thing I learned isn’t taught before the map. If it was, there would be no misconception because it’s common sense.

I don't understand why schools teach us misleading information. When i was in highschool, i realized that a lot of misleading information were told when i was younger (midschool, elementary school, before school). I was upset, some came with an argument "it's more simple or easy to understand" Regardless of the truth of info. One thing that they don't calculate is how people tend to believe the first information

I remember a grade school textbook with the "tongue map". Though it had the disclaimer that all sensations could be perceived in the tongue, though the basic ones (4 at the time) were stronger in those four regions. Maybe the idea that people thought you could only perceive taste in four distinct regions of the mouth is itself a misconception? I mean, anyone could put a sweet on the back of the mouth and see for himself that's not true.

Ted Ed always create a Interesting content! Thanks for your information. I agree that we have to try to maintain a healthy skepticism due to misinformation . Nowadays there are many ways to find the information sush as social media but we cannot verify whether is reliable or not. So, we should have media literacy even tho in the real world we should listen carefully and not be persuaded.

The problem exacerbated with social media and internet. There is so much news and data that one comes across every day it is tough to trace the origin and do fact check etc. Then there is public perception , many versions of "fake news"/"misinformation" told 100 times with 1000s of people every data eventually turns into fact. In this case many choose conformity over enlightenment.
