So which milk is actually best for you? And which uses the fewest resources and produces the least pollution? Jonathan J. O’Sullivan and Grace E. Cunningham dive into some of the most popular milks to find out.

On an economical level, I think it’s also important to factor in where you live! Take rice milk from countries big on rice production, and coconut milk from tropical countries for example. @@crabjunie I don't know where you live, but soy is grown a lot in Europe, the brand I use is grown in France, so it really depends where you live but soy can be super easy to access locally. @@cablesandcrochet Whoa that’s really cool, great way to save up on groceries then! I live on the other side of the world tho so our situations are really different haha. Oats aren’t agreeable with the Philippine climate so we don’t grow them commercially, just rely on product imports. Soy is a bit better off, but local soybean production is low and we still also rely on imports. Rice and coconut milk aren’t as popular here as soy milk, but I’m hoping that’ll change sooner or later because those are the crops we grow in abundance 😊

I think. it's also important to consider the ethical aspects of production too. For instance, dairy milk involves the enslavement of sentient beings, who are continually artificially impregnated to induce milk production, and then have their calf ripped away from them as soon as they're born. But wait, there's more: if the calf is a male, they will usually be shot on site or shipped to a slaughterhouse for veal. Aaaaand, once the cow has gone through a few pregnancies, which has usually worn her body down so much, leading to troubles standing up or infections, and her milk production declines, she is finally shipped to the slaughterhouse as well. It's best to avoid causing such direct pain and suffering to sentient beings!

Plant-based milk can be pretty expensive depending on where you live, but I've found that oat milk (and lots of other plant-based milks) are very easy to make at home. You can save quite a bit of money over time, by making it yourself. Another added bonus is that you avoid any unwanted additives. The only downside really is that you miss out on some added nutrients, however, you can find them in many vitamin supplements! I would definitely recommend trying it out!

Well, they did It cleverly. From a nutritional point each has their pros and cons, so no one comes at a head, but if you're talking enviroment, cow milk Will never be as efficient as plant based, just beacuse physics. The clever part was being completely neutral and state all the relevant facts, of both sides, in an unbiased way, hoping the people understand them and create their own opinion. They could have just put the side they were most interested in (like many do) but that would be way worse. That would be influencing your viewers by hiding key aspects of the conversation.

@@parnianx to be fair, if they did start talking about all the health problems that have been associated with dairy consumption, it would have given the impression of bias against it and turned many people away from hearing the rest of the more relevant facts. Personally I don't care if dairy is as healthy or as unhealthy as anyone claims. All I need to know to not want it, since I have allowed my empathy to override the cognitive dissonance I had years ago, is that it comes from animals. Environmental impacts and exploitation of animals in creating dairy milk motivated my transition to plant-based options. For cow milk, one strategy to increase output is to keep the female cow in a continuous cycle of pregnancy through artificial insemination so milk is being produced. Additionally, they are separated from their offspring shortly after birth, which are destined for the same fate or shipped to be slaughtered for their meat. A lot of non-human animal suffering is made invisible to us because we benefit from it, but we can rise from our own ignorance.

Yeah, it's left quite unclear. I believe those 4km2 come from this eq. : (kg of food for the lifetime of a cow)/(L of milk produced byy the cow in a lifetime) if all those kg of food where to be grown at the same time. In reality, the soil used o grow wheat and other grains for cattle is reused several times a year, so thats why we can produce millons of L of milk with such a "small" land area. Tho, using directly the grains to produce some "milk like" beverage will allways be more efficient both in water, energy and land usage.

@tekeyia9279
@tekeyia9279 2 жыл бұрын
@@dinonoobster4460 To make cow milk, you need land for both the cows and the crops, and those crops are not for human consumption. 50% of habitable land is used for agriculture, and of that 77% is for livestock and their feed. Only 23% of crop land is for human consumption. And you do not need pesticides to grow crops; ever heard of the term organic, no pesticides are allowed. Also you do not need excess land just for a plant product to have added nutrients, those are added in the process of making the product; also if you are eating a plant based diet then eating a variety of plants will be enough to get the nutrients you need. Cows produce the most greenhouse gases by the way, so cutting down on dairy production would help with climate change.

It’s a subjective stance, depending on how much you personally care for animals or not. People *need* to care for the environment and our health to ensure the safety of the human race (this is the most basic and selfish reason for why people care for it, not taking into account any other species of animal), but some people just don’t care about a cow’s well-being as much as others, and this video is supposed to be from an objective point of view - not taking into account our morals or ethics, just our health and the wellbeing of the planet.

There was a study that found that the amount of weight of animals killed in farming the crops it takes to make vegan and vegetarian products ( think mice, rabbits, small things that die due to pesticides and the horrible effects of mono crop culture) is less than the weight of animals slaughtered at beef farms ... might actually be all meat farms, but definitely at least beef. So that’s total weight. The number of animals killed is far higher, as it would take x amount of mice to equal one cow. All in all, billions of animals die for the vegan lifestyle. Whereas carnivores can live off of 1-2 cows a year.

Governments paying farmers in order to make cow milk cheaper than plant milk should be illegal. Unfortunately, the dairy industry has a history of lining politicians pockets and running ad campaigns. It targets farmers too so they know they can make more profit that way. But it's all a cycle. The only reason it's cheaper to make cow milk is because the farmers are voting in favor of laws for taxpayer money to make up the difference. We just need to run campaigns and education seminars to teach farmers we could have the same laws for plant based milks. We could be using taxpayer money to pay farmers for plant based milks instead. Plus incentives to switch their farms, which can be expensive.
