Alex Filippenko received his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Caltech in 1984 and joined the University of California, Berkeley faculty in 1986, where he is currently the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences. An observational astronomer who makes frequent use of the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck 10-meter telescopes, his primary areas of research are supernovae, active galaxies, black holes, gamma-ray bursts, and the expansion of the Universe. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences and one of the world's most highly cited astronomers, he has coauthored more than 640 scientific publications and is the recipient of numerous prizes for his research. He was a member of both teams that discovered the accelerating expansion of the Universe, propelled by mysterious "dark energy."

Somewhere in this information universe known as KZbin there is a video essay on quantum theory that I believe offers a clue, or maybe an explanation, for dark energy. According to this explanation the fabric of the universe, at the quantum level, is a sea of froth or foam of particles popping in and out of existence in pairs of both matter and anti matter. These paired packets of energy exist for an infinitesimally short period of time (perhaps Planck time) before annihilating one another. This self destructive pairing releases an incredibly minute amount of energy, but in the vastness of space this energy, though exceedingly brief in time and energy output might be sufficient to cause the universe to expand. Thus, like photons acting on the surface of a solar sail in which a single photon means nothing, the huge aggregate numbers of photons can cause such a sail to accelerate, it may be similar to the action produced by the pairs of virtual particle pairs on the universe itself.

My idea so I get to name it! What I mean is, no one has claimed it so I'm officially calling, "Dibs." Voyager 1 is now in the, "Milky Way's interstellar time" or "Mikey's Time." "V-ger's" message has sped up now that it's outside our Sun's, "Time Bubble," or, "Terran Time." It will be faster, still, when "V-ger" sends a message from beyond the Milky Way's time bubble. Then there's Outside the Local Group time bubble. So on and so on until we get outside any influence and into the, "True Interstellar Time Standard." Or, "T.I..." ;-P Now that "V-ger" is outside our Sun's reach, in interstellar space, it's now in the Milky Way's faster moving, Interstellar Time or "Mikey's Time." This can be proven by turning off everything except its clock and transmitter. Have "V-ger" read time for as long as possible. They WILL show the flow of time speeds up the further away you get from any celestial bodies. Until you reach the Milky Way's time standard or "Mikey's Time." •Our sun's time bubble: "Terran Time" we know and have measured. In a lifetime, our head is one second younger than our feet. •Milky Way's time bubble or "Mikey's Time." The rate/flow of TIME outside any influence but within the Milky Way: We just got there and are still figuring what the difference is. Wild guess I'd say time will increase in speed, now and until V-ger is outside the Ort cloud. •Local Group's time bubble or the rate/flow of time outside of any influence but within the Local Group: Name still open and unknown. Wild guess .08% to a couple seconds faster, maybe. Used just for reference. •Outside any influence in the, "True Interstellar Time Standard." (or T.I...) ;-P This name is NOT up for grabs. The rate/flow of time is fastest here. (Time flows fastest here so it's best to use a motor boat and hold tight. Always applies when you're in T.I....) ;-P A minute is a minute in all. It's the rate/flow I'm talking about. Heck, rivers of time flowing differently might explain dark energy and dark matter. The Milky Way's Interstellar Time Standard will be known as, "Mikey's Time." Pass it on, please and thank you.

dark energy is just that,!! or for the sake of argument anti matter that wiche cannot be converted into matter, it may be possible to detect it around a black hole as at the creation of matter i.e.stars it wud be expelled.simalerly this may be the case involving clashes of galaxcys or super nova. time no doubt will convey this.

Dr Alex, a great perspective total common sense, ya dark energy is 73% and we as 4% becomes part of dark matter and are remaing that so,for couple of million of years and not really questioning our role in the whole process, we as human have an in-build gadget which gets its illumination from that 73% of dark energy can i have e mail id of Dr Alex to substantiate my point further through some of my info-graphics.

The arguments for and against this mysterious phenomenon that we don't know. The exact nature of dark energy remains mysterious. Perhaps dark energy does not even exist unless captured and proof by storage by an infrastructure, analogous to a dam as proven by hydraulic power storage to produce electricity. May be a pyramidal infrastructure for the storage of a primitive energy storage that we also don't know. The discovery of what appears to be an accelerating expansion is undisputed, but are we being tricked by nature hidden mystery billion of years spacetime twilight zones (unless spacetime removed) and remaining matters? As we know oil and gas from fossils but some deniers saying that Petroleum is made from aquatic phytoplankton and zooplankton, and because petroleum is created by biomass, plastic also is a form of biomass. The mysteries continue until we can capture them and proof dark energy storage etc. in our applications to produce electricity etc..

i can easily acept millions of big bangs,BUT NOT ONE, had this been the case all matter wud hav been particlised if not vapourised.hence the universe wud have to be billions of years older than claimed. matter and dark matter are the same thing, all matter after being created in a black hole is degraded over eons of time back into its constituant particles. through mutual attraction quantum particles surrounded by dark energy are via gravity drawn together, eventully being funneled back into galxcys and spirelled back into the black hole centre along with visible matter and light etc, when finnally sqeezed into the necersary state they combust back into new stars, perfect recycling id call it.ha,ha, as for expansion all matter in cooler space will acellerate due to lack of friction with its suroundings.gravity etc, infinate expansion is highly unlikly, as is the colapsing theory, it may be that as with gravity bending light, the univers will also appear to bend with the overriding dark energy being the driving force, hence i beleive the universe to be self perpetuating, and constant although utterly unstable within its self. with regards to orther dimensions i see this as wholley aceptable,as are perception of the universe is blatantly flawed, as i sugest it is continually turning itself inside out in all directions, and there fore wichever direction we look we can in reality only luk INTO SPACE. where orther forms of life or entirtys are concernd it shud be found that there are millions more types of life existing in the sea of space itself than on any planet,;;.} both visible matter and antimatter are contrary to popular belief wholley compaterble, with dark energy they are the orchestrators of life, those searching for a god may hav more luck searching for at least 3.
