the usual way this question is asked is "what if MONEY did not matter?" Yet I just realized that I am not in it for the money, but for approval and admiration. So this way of asking is so much more powerful for me

This type of knowledge is what results in most amazing discussions. Self-realization of ego is different from realizing it's materialistic wishes. Psychedelic plants and language helped us evolve consciousness, and then materialistic culture and ego. I'm not just the only guy who firmly believes this. I suggest checking out some of McKenna's work (many lectures here on KZbin and elsewhere, better than some of these pretentiously marketed TED 'conferences' and all of it's mainstream academia)

This is the most deeply insightful and correct presentation I've heard. I asked this very question of people years and years ago, and they gave me a blank stare. It is the means to discover what you would have a more fulfilling life with should you pursue it. For those able to see to the extent this presentation speaks of (it's a small number sadly) they have only agreement and thanks for it having been stated to clearly.

This is amazing. It has resulted in the most profound conversations with every friend that has seen it. One friend stopped seeing his psychiatrist after beginning to answer this question. He realized living a lie was the source of all his problems. This really cuts to the core, past all the BS. I am still trying to answer the question and it isn't pretty. I imagine the world would be a much more amazing place if more people lived the answer to this question.

that is a very interesting insight. but we have to remember that the talk leading up to the question is about leadership and vision. a life with out any desire such as love,passion,vision is not empty but will not allow you to lead in a way that will make others want to follow you in a way that the speaker is talking about. a vision of the future might be an artificial desire but in order to lead in an effective way you need that desire to inspire others to follow..

In short: Being an effective leader is about appreciating and respecting differences, paradoxes, and contradictions and starting the behavioral pendulum of appreciation and respect. People won't follow you if they don't agree. They won't agree if they don't respect you. They won't respect you if you don't respect them and their differing ideas and attitudes. As a credible person, when you appreciate others, they respect you. When they respect you, they follow you. This is the law of attraction.

Every answer I came up with, I realized it can be treated like the ones which you call 'artificial desires'. So I came to the conclusion that it's not the point in the wish - the point is in the absence of wish. That led me to Buddhas' teachings, which referes to wish as 'source of all suffering'. So, I quess we all just want to be happy and enyoj this journey and everything we do has a root in that wish...and to achieve that, we need to stop wishing, because that is a journey with no end.

Gustafsson 1, 2, 3 - you asked, "So life is an illusion? What good does it give to you to think this way?" In Western society, we believe that there is an independent reality, regardless of your perspective (illusion), my perspective (illusion), or any leader's perspective (illusion). Words are not thought - words attempt to explain the thought. Words are only an attempt to portray the thought or the reality. Getting to the essence of your own and your follower's self-beliefs is leadership.

(how I interpreted it)..what is being said over all is you have everything you could possibly imagine(WHAT YOU THINK YOU WANT) then he says "what do you want now"(WHAT YOU REALLY WANT DEEP DOWN INSIDE) the first question is to eliminate artificial desires second question is to bring out what you truly want.. you have everything now what?love?passion?..then you should put all your life's dedication into that instead of trying to get all those other things you wanted in the first question..

I think what he's trying to say is that he wants entrepreneurs to imagine their vision of the future where they achieved every single life goals have won everything they could have ever wanted. When he asks "what do you want now?" the answer is a paradox, because you already have everything. When you already have everything you want, the only thing left is give something back. His question is basically "what do you want to give back to the world?" It's dangerous because he gave back everythin

Science is a method, not an interest to me (except for the "facts" that it helped discover, of course). Interesting. Although, that's not all that dangerous a question for someone like me. I already know what I want. Hell, I sacrificed a project I felt was unnecessary to pursue what I want. The alternative is that we go to a dark place with evil and torment FOREVER. and I'd rather go to Nirvana so I strive for it.

I feel sorry for some of you that didn't get Bryans message. Here's a simplification of it: "STOP LIVING FOR PEOPLE THAT WON'T OR WOULDN'T BE AROUND YOUR DEATH BED AS THEY LAID YOU TO REST - IF THEY KNEW WHAT YOU BROUGHT TO THIS WORLD BEFORE YOU DEMIZED." Once you can do that, ask your self what you want and then take your first step forward and keep going in your new life. If you have not already found your passion in what you are living for, this is probably why you didn't get his message.

At least business owners aren't lying to the public in their desires. Charities, for the most part, use donations to fund the charity itself--not to do the work the charity wants done. That's why the most successful charities are ones that take in actual things and not money. So, at least business owners that are helping the world are doing it in a more honest way with the world and not in a way that falsely represents their goals.

Tons of good info, but the structure of this talk is terrible. Very hard to follow because he meanders from point to point without a strong enough theme to keep it tied together. This is not only a bad style for TED, it is even a bad style for telling stories. It is challenging to see how the first 92% of the talk leads into the eponymous question, which he finally gets to at 18:00
@nwkegannw11 жыл бұрын
Completely intentional... the point of the first 18 minutes was to prime you for the question so that it would more impactful.
@andy4an11 жыл бұрын
nwkegannw Then it fails at that. structure-less speaking leaves you confused, not curious. And 18 minutes is quite a time commitment for the average youtuber. It seems more likely that people will start and give up on the talk than actually build curiosity about someone who just won't get to the point. The idea of leaving the bomb for the end is viable, but not like this.
