Күн бұрын

As a college student, activist, and community volunteer, Luis is working to change our perspective on the undocumented immigrant youth of this country.
Luis Mejia is a student at FSCJ. Although he has lived in
the United States for 17 years, he is originally from Mexico, and is one of the
thousands of people who were granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival by
President Obama’s direction to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in
2012. Growing up between American and Mexican cultures, Luis has discovered how
valuable an education is in each.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

From the top floor of the hospital I was born. You can see Mexico. Three miles and my life would have been very different. People don’t get to pick where they are born. If you were born here , like I was, this nation is not our birthright. We could have been born anywhere, we are very fortunate. People are willing to walk a thousand miles to get here. Give thanks, and please people have empathy for your fellow man.

Luis, I just saw this video. I am so proud of you. You were an exceptional student in my course and seeing this makes me all the more impressed with you for your perseverance and fortitude. I am so sorry for the laws created that don't take into account the real life ramifications for those effected by them. Proud of you for sharing your story and speaking out! Question: wouldn't it be better - to change the countries that people flee from to be more like western countries? Rather than displacing whole countries full of people to western countries because they dont want to live in their home countries? But then again - isn't that what colonialism was? To try make all countries like western countries so no one would have to flee anywhere?

So why arent you thinking of the people you leave behind? Make your country better. Stand for "social justice " in YOUR country. Your parents created this situation. Why dont you cteate a TED addressing the parents who are responsible for your plight? I know there are wonderfully talented young people such as Luis that are PUT in these frustrating paradigms, but as he tells of the woes, there is a missing premise. Laws to preserve our culture and resources were ORIGINALLY fought and paid for by those who thought it worth the COSTS. Few that come illegally, come with AMERICAN VALUES in mind. When you go through the citizenship process you are merely introduced to those values and at least must affirm them. You also, must then pay a cost. We are not a one world society. America has particular ideology. It is upon that foundation our schools, wealth, individualism, and pursuits are built. Luis, your confusion at the source of your rejection stems from there. And i am sorry, but 20 yrs to make THIS American was worth the choices and struggle.

@@mitchellwintercat People like you tend to forget that countries like USA where founded by inmigrants, your are giving the bare minimum explanation of the problem but not adressing it, not in the slighest.. you are just diminishing it, the sins of the father are NOT to be inhered by the sons, that's just wrong, a'm not saying that every inmigrant should be accepted just like that, but AT LEAST inmigrants that where there a loong time, since they where childs and underaged, should be allowed to remain there.

@@dethskullcrusher nico, if someone uses your property, just because it was accessible to him, you would not assume it to be his right to do so. It wouldnt matter HOW LONG he was using it. You would expect it returned as if stolen. Crime is committed by the parents and the rest of us are expected to help the criminals and their BENEFICIARIES to be justified. Again, declare your allegiance to USA, pay your time and money, then you have rights as a citizen.

I understand your struggles my brother and I know how hard it is to succeed when there are so many factors that are out of your control, I pray that one day there will be change. The laws that were created in those times when there was only one dominant group and they took the land of and tortured the natives, took advantage of others and made them slaves, yet they claimed that back then it was " land of the free".They also introduced opression slavery and control as a way of them succeeding and creating laws that would benefit them . Unfortunately ever since those times there has not been law reforms that are needed. Even for people born in U.S and are minorities experience institutional racism. I am proud that you were able to share your story in Ted X 👏👏🙏

You sound like you are blaming our government and laws which is accurate since you and your family were allowed to overstay visas. But your parents are also to blame. Your story may be sad, but America cannot be the dumping ground for all the world's problems. My first question for you is who is paying for your education? Is it American taxpayers and legal immigrants? Are you suggesting we should change our laws to accommodate you?

Maybe the glass is half full. You got a free education in the us. Its a lot more than you would have got where you came from. Either way you had a great 16 years of your life here and a free high school education. If you go back to your home country now your life is still better because you where here originally. Stop crying and be thankful for what you have. I have more respect for someone who can take advantages in life and build on them. Rather than cry on stage that you had one advantage but that's not enough just because its not "fair". Fair, if you had been born in your home country you would have got none of it. So be thankful for what you got. Strive on. Do better. And reapply for citizenship after doing good in your home country for a while

Of course the comments are disabled on the male privilege ted talk. I personally disagreed with most of the ideas being spoken about, but I am not allowed to discuss my opinion on the matter! Why not? People should be free to disagree and have their own opinion on issues in our society. I know this is a comment meant for a different video, that is posted on a completely random video and that might be rather annoying, so for that I apologise. However in future, please turn comments on for issues such as male privilege, so discussions can be had between people who disagree and agree.

His analogy up front is wrong. No straight A student gets one C and is then not omitted into a 4 year school. He says "don't label, don't judge, don't stereotype", but that is what he is doing to our immigration system and everyone in it. He says we are all in together but he is pleading for himself and his cause and people like him. If he wasn't in this situation, would he care? Once he has listened to everyone's stories then he can propose a solution. He never talks to his parents or about them. Never once asks them "Why did you do it? You were breaking the law. Either he must or his parents must accept some responsibility for the situation. In addition when he mentions the problems that other countries are having, there is no proposed solution to the countries problem only a potential solution for an individual or family to come to this one. We do have a broken immigration system here in the US but one of the major breaking points is so many people came in illegally or over stayed their visa. 1. secure the border. 2. Fix the visa program (ie track and send back as soon as overstay). 3. create a faster, smoother immigration process. All of which the current president is trying to do. The last 5 failed. This one will probably as well.

Or the Atilla the Hun Won't pay restitution to Greeks. Oh wait, what were we talking about again I forgot. I remember restitution, well Ms. Kim, did you get restitution from Ghenghis Khan?

I don't understand why all these parents couldn't become citizens by going through the right channels and taking the test? Could someone explain that? And why couldn't the children (2nd gen.) become citizens either themselves? I honestly don't understand how they couldn't do it?

@@alexz3t899 I have done plenty of research over the last few years. I even wrote a research paper on it back when I was in college, and that's EXACTLY what they do. There are 9 U.S. consulates and 1 U.S. embassy spread all throughout Mexico where refugees can ask for asylum and are either granted or denied after extensive background checks. Nearly half the people that apply are granted asylum. The other half do not, as they do not meet the criteria for asylum because they either lie, have criminal backgrounds or simply want better economic opportunity, which is not a valid reason for seeking asylum. Many choose to bypass the documentation process entirely, crossing illegally because they are selfish and want to take advantage of our ridiculous immigration laws, while at the same time cut in front of everyone else waiting patiently to get in legally. Hundreds of thousands of illegals are apprehended at the border annually (over 100,000 this last April alone). Illegal aliens take advantage of our laws and our welfare system by having anchor baby children and then applying for welfare under their names, upwards of $3500 or more per month. Almost none of them pay income taxes but still receive all the public resources a citizen does, such as free public education for their children (citizens or not) as well as many other services provided by the government at the city, state, and federal levels, all at the taxpayer's expense. They are parasitic in nature and we need to put a stop to this invasion.

Now I understand why many people have prejudice to most immigrant. Firstly, they should know that they are immigrant. They leave their homes, come to new places with the hope to find new life. That's a need okay. But pls understand your position. You come to other people's house and most of you acting like as if it is the residents' responsibility to take care of them LOL. Ordering the right for equal school fees, asking to be adopted and acting like it's a society sin, blaming how cruel the gov is since they can't have visas, unable to be the resident while they leave their home and coming to another foreign country. I obviously don't deny the fact that there are still many immigrants come to developed countries and becoming successful there and they become citizens. But for 1 thing, they dedicate. And now what? When seeing immigrants come, resident will only see most of them acting like an orphan, asking a stranger to adopt them otherwise he would cry and conclude that the stranger is inhuman and cruel. While most immigrants come, crime rate increase, not to mention, littering, affecting to social daily life. So stop blaming and playing victims as if it's the whole society's fault and how desperate u are. Thank u, next

Is it okay for a person to steal a loaf of bread if they are hungry? Maybe we can overlook that one. What happens when 100 people steal bread because they are hungry? A 1000? 10,000? 100,000? And what if those 100,000 people have children that are also hungry? Is it okay for them to steal bread? What happens to the bread makers who lose to these people who steal their bread? What happens to the people who can pay for bread but have to pay more to make up for the loss to the bread maker? Is there any justice for the bread maker or the person who now has to pay more?

No one is stealing from anyone, that is the perspective and victim mentality that a person creates as an individual . America is the land of opportunities for all but the government needs to reform the laws to help all americans not just the poor " bread maker".The laws have been created to keep the poor people in poverty and opressed. The laws never help the middle working class which is impossible for the middle class to become rich. The rich will continue to be rich and in control because they take advantage of the loop holes of the laws that their own created.. it was not surprising for me to see president #45 push the tax reform that would give tax breaks and incentives to businessmen such as himself BUT it was not specifically wrote on that tax reform law that it was mandatory to create jobs for the working class..ofcourse another loophole that the rich will know how to work the system for their convenience

Yo Mamma It's not theft if you ask first and show gratitude and get the go ahead to take the bread. The folks who try to immigrate here do this. The process is what is broken, not the folks who suffer because of the system's inadequacy.
