We become good at what we practice and most of us are experts at practicing distraction. We live in a society that trains us to multi-task and jump from one thing to another in an uncontrolled way. The great panacea for a world plagued by distraction is learning and practicing the art of concentration. Living as a Hindu monk for 10 years Dandapani was trained in understanding the mind. There he learned and practiced the fine art of bringing concentration into everyday life. In this talk, Dandapani will share spiritual tools to learn to create unwavering focus in our lives and the boundless benefits that result from it.

Dandapani is a Hindu priest, speaker on self-development and an entrepreneur.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I like the analogy of a ball and on a surface for awareness and mind. I'm really grateful to learn this knowledge and also love the note that life is a manifestation of where your energy is flowing. Now I will need to be confident to find where my passions are and practice concentration because that's where I want my energy to flow! I also remember one day I joked with a friend on a difficult subject or major he took upon, but what he said shocked me a lot, and still keeps echoing in my head: "It's not that hard if you pay enough attention". I was touched by this attitude and also felt different. It is a very powerful, inspiring yet encouraging statement that I kept in my mind. Hope ones who see this comment be happy and successful in your life. Good luck my friends!

When someone speaks so clearly and eloquently, logically meeting all points of a topic and making it crystal clear and easily digestible to an audience, that itself is an impressive indication of their ability to concentrate. When you’re mentally aligned so staunchly to exactly what you wish to convey without even sub-moments of distraction, you’re naturally creative, funny & engaging and at the peak of your eloquence and intelligence. In a way, I even think intelligence is simply a measure of your ability to concentrate. Why is that geniuses just shut themselves up and intensely focus on one thing they do for an extended period of time? It is a way of incubating their awareness on an object of study for so long that it yields unbelievable, magical results utterly incomprehensible to the average mind. Yogis of the past really had it right in ancient India to develop droves of methods to articulate this lost art. Each breathing/kriya practice is engineered to center your mind and preciously improve what is termed ‘intelligence’ in today’s day and age. Sadly this knowledge is now horribly fragmented and known minimally, the mainstream still believing yoga to be a fitness & lifestyle gimmick to their pretense-filled, exterior life. The seriousness and grand scale of this topic is so underrated and grossly under-understood, I think it’s real time to reveal it’s true meaning and application to the deteriorating state of human affairs.

Take away points: - The mind and awareness are 2 separate things; ball of light analogy. - The art of concentration is the art of keeping awareness, that ball of light on one thing for an extended period of time. - Learn to concentrate by doing one thing at a time. - When talking with your partner, keep your awareness on that person, if it drifts away, bring it back. ‘Give him or her your undivided attention’

Focusing on one thing is basically eliminating all the unnecessary stuffs in your mind , a simple way to do so is by ask and decide method which says whenever you concentrate and plenty other things come to your mind , then simply ask yourself (like what do you want to focus on?) And you will notice that you will decide the most important thing at that moment and ultimately your focus will be on the most important thing. I'm not saying that asking yourself will help you to focus for long , but with frequent asking and practicing you will able to stick on one thing for long. Lately I've used this way and it's quite helpful ... just thought of sharing...it might help y'all too.
@mtyquinn6
@mtyquinn6 3 жыл бұрын
I do not think one can eliminate the unnecessary stuffs - but rather place the awareness on the stuffs that will ultimately get what you want (that is an entirely different discussion of what we SHOULD want ;-) ) As demonstrated here, we CAN choose what to focus on... Realizing that we have gone adrift to what we wanted to be aware of is the concept of concentration.

Nivedita Kashikar Sir you are correct. I do not share the same faith as you but as God is my witness you have spoken the truth. Some people blame EVERYTHING on something or someone when a matter goes beyond their compression. Religion is the most common since it is a deep subject which requires average IQ. Making those with such low IQ a moron. Thank you and please dont stop saying what is true.

every ted talk keeps amusing me, I'm gifted to have found this video, I was able to understand that the mind consists of two different parts, the awareness and the mind (in a sense that consists of different kinds of options), meaning, awareness and options. setting your awareness on a particular option increases focus on that option. I also understand that distractions are things that comes easily i.e trying to drift you away from what you are at, at a particular time, and the only to keep focused or get back on track is to drift your attention back to what you are at. keeping focused in a sentence, is just drifting your mind back to what you are at. Dandapani mentioned phrases like you own yourself, you can get yourself focused on anything for as long as you want. i.e if you pratice something a day for 6hours for a year, you are going to get really good at it, meanwhile if get yourself distracted for your decades, what are you going to be good at? He also mentioned things like if you don't know or practice concentration, how can you know how to concentrate, which is a very important context because knowing how the mind operates will increase your concentration, keeping you more focused. Thank you Dandapani!!!!

This video helped me to experience a mental shift in how I think and let myself get distracted. I used to think the distracting thought is just as important as the thought it's distracting me from, so it's ok to keep hopping back and forth recklessly. Thoughts are abstract, and every one of them can feel equally important, so how could I prioritize? Now I see it's not about the importance of the individual thoughts. It's about the importance of my ability to focus, so I shouldn't let myself get distracted from what I chose to focus on, whatever its abstract inherent merit.

To everyone watching this video, Hindus are the most persecuted lots in the history of humankind. Once extended from Afghanistan to Indonesia, they perished from everywhere except for India and Nepal. Spaces of arts, academia and politics don't like talking about it because Hindus are a divided community themselves. Missionary crusades have converted millions of Hindus lately and high birthrate among Muslims and forced conversions in the hinterland pose a threat to the Hindu civilisation. Non-proselytising Hindu civilisation needs your support.

I told the school this. Concentration is an art. It needs to be practiced. That should be the first thing children are taught. I said this on behalf of my son when he started school. There are very few of us who were born to understand things like this and best of all be very aware of things like this. After the fools burn the world to the ground Hopefully people like us will get a chance to show how great things could be when we control our emotions and instincts and stop fearing eachother. If you're afraid of change let us show you how great it can be.

I agree with the essence of this talk - practice concentration through meditation. However I do not agree with the premise that ADHD/ADD is something you can cure with it, as someone with ADHD it isn't just an attention issue, it is so much more. Whilst it would deeply help, there's no denying that, it is a longer journey than simply mastering attention. I can hyper-focus my attention in a way someone who is neurotypical can not, I believe its more about learning about your own brain and experience and how you function (alongside mindfulness and meditation and other things).
@Kipicus
@Kipicus 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. ADHD isn't a lack of discipline, it's a physical lack of dopamine that creates a myriad of different symptoms which is far greater than just "I need discipline." As much as I enjoy sitting and listening to talks from monks, there is a fundamental misunderstanding behind the science of neuro-divergence and I hope as we continue to learn, people start to have compassion for those who are neurodivergent and stop using them as a "Look at this guy, don't be like them." sort of example. We definitely don't want to tell people who have ADHD to go off their meds, because a common co-morbidity is depression and anxiety, and living with ADHD unmedicated is kind of their own personal heck. :(

One thing I would change here - concentration practices can help a person with ADHD, but if you have ADHD, you start with an inherent and significant disadvantage relative to most people. It's just like a chronic physical health condition - you can still exercise and eat healthy, and you should, but the rewards will not be as great (but still worth it).

I taught myself to concentrate by learning to play the piano. Daily practice from age 6, noodling around and being able to copy songs (using both B& W keys) by age 4. After a couple of decades I was an accomplished pianist and accompanist. There are other ways to get there. Music practice is excellent for concentration.

I was only joking though. Can't afford much of a vacation myself at the moment (and I could do with one!). Having said that, I'm starting to look in to the power of positive versus negative thinking, the law of attraction and all that. The more I look in to it, the more I think that there may be something to it. I suppose that is what I was getting at, but in a jokey kind of way. Anyway, I hope you get the vacation you need soon. If you cant afford exactly the kind of vacation you want, why not go camping. I can't recommend it enough!
