This lady may not be the best trumpet player BUT she broked the barrier of our Latino musical culture , I personally grow up in Cartagena, Colombia dancing the type of music that she plays , it will take many many years to people like Brownman to understand this (maybe not in his life time). She is one of us and We love her. She is beautiful and has great talent. However not her best performance here. When you play cumbia, porro, salsa, danzon, chachacha, bolero ,mambo, and many others then you can judge her.

Why don't you google those criticizing her and check their credentials. You'll find many of the trumpet players in this thread doing so are actually MORE accomplished and credentialed than her. Not "famous" -- but better players with a deeper, more respected resumes inside the industry. Ted Talks is not an exclusive source of brilliant musicians. And being on a Ted Talk does not automatically certify one as incredible. This Ted Talk was about a woman's interesting story -- NOT her abilities. Which are, in fact, average at best. A simple investigation of the Latin-jazz artform will make that obvious, as many of those criticizing her middling abilities have already stated.

This is a very enjoyable video! She plays well, and has a nice stage presence. I feel sorry for those that feel they must only critique a performance, instead of being able to feel it. While yes, there may be better technical performers, you need to also understand there are different musical styles, and tastes too. While one performer may be better technically, it does not mean the feel for the music, and what is conveyed to the audience, or for that matter the listener of as recording, is a strong emotionally when listening to the "better" performer. In many music styles, a perfect performance lacks a feel of reality, and will not be received as well by the listeners of that music. Since the ideal is to draw in the audience, which then is actually the better performance?

A little sloppy BUT she is GREAT! Trumpet playing is my Passion, it's my church. When I play a tune, all the pressures, all the challenges, conflicts and difficulties in my life are gone. I'm completely cleansed and reborn. I think anyone who doesn't have a passion like this for something is dead inside. She has this passion.
@denshi-oji4947 жыл бұрын
Well said. A heart felt performance often feels better, and is better received than one that may be a perfect performance. The passion is truly where the heart of the music is conveyed, sometimes the passion is so great, it can even make an absolutely horrid performance still very enjoyable. There have been many performances I have seen, by various musicians over the years, and some of the most enjoyable ones were when various musical performance errors/mistakes were made. What made them so enjoyable? The passion of the performance. It is easier to feel the difference in the live performance however.

What is the trumpet playing? Higher, faster, louder? It' s not music. And TED is not for such a competition. It's the place for the people, who have the story of their life.
@BrownmanMusicArchives7 жыл бұрын
@ Daiel Zellwger -- Only someone who has never listened to ACTUAL Latin Trumpet players would define trumpet playing like that.. Go away and figure out what makes a solid Latin trumpet player, then come back and see if she meets those standards. As many in this thread has already figured out --she does not. And, TED is about showcasing excellence. She is far from that. She's right at the medium. Average. Banal. Mediocre. For TED to showcase mediocre, is a travesty -- which is why SO many people are upset in this thread.

Just to be clear, a musician gets what he/she goes for. Even for the best, it goes beyond just playing. I'm glad this woman got a gig. But TED fancies itself cutting edge. This doesn't even come close! I have been to over 80 different countries and musicians travel all the time and play in bands in other cultures all the time. For example, the public would be better served by a TED talk about Alex Sipiagin, the great Russian jazz trumpeter who moved to New York and is developing a legitimate career performing music of the highest caliber. Or Liesl Whitaker, who plays lead trumpet for the Army Jazz Ambassadors, if you want a story about breaking through a serious musical glass ceiling. Ingrid Jensen is a serious talent if that's the angle you are looking for. This woman is average. I can throw a rock down Frenchman Street in New Orleans and hit 20 trumpeters that play better and leading more interesting lives.
@davidcranfield21976 жыл бұрын
Gary Leming - I couldn't agree more. You could throw that same rock down any street in the West Village in New York and hit 100 trumpet players playing better with more interesting back stories. I was there recently and went to 55 Bar and Smalls. The talent was astounding.

@Daniel Zellwger -- no, the trumpet playing is EXACTLY what most of us are talking about. You may not be, but many of us here are. And if you enjoy her story -- good for you. But let's not pretend a good story = great musicianship. And musicianship is on the low end here, as many have pointed out, despite your hollow cries of "but her story is soooo moving". It may be. But I'd be more moved if she was actually great at what she does. And she really isn't.

I can't believe the top comment of this video is, "That's some very *mediocre trumpet playing". She is a likable person who's trumpet playing is only part of what she has to offer. This music, like New Orleans jazz, has its roots gritty self-taught playing. The music does not have to sound immaculate. It has to have flavor... Her music has it.
@fontajo7 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't be surprised. Anybody who is very serious about trumpet performance knows that the only reason she has any attention at all is the fact that she's a blond woman from a smaller country. I played like her when I was 12, and it's just a little bit annoying. Nonetheless, it is a ted talk so it's more about the story, that in which she has.

@BrownmanMusicArchives7 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Zellwger : The most important thing is that you want to elevate mediocrity because you like her story and/or look. Those of us who deal with music with our EARS, have seen past that, and demand more. Enjoy her, but let's not pretend she's something she's not. And what she's not -- is anything more than an average Latin trumpet player. (P.S. -- your claim that those dissatisfied with her banality are somehow missing something due to "blindness" is hilarious -- in an aural artform. Use your eyes and your kidneys and your testicles to appreciate her Daniel Zellwger -- but for those of us who listen with our ears... that's when she starts to fail).

Yeah, I know - perfectly in tune, consistent timbre, passionate, and performed in front of a large crowd of intellectual strangers. Yeah. She kinda sucks.
@JazzyJonas8 жыл бұрын
Also, "very mediocre" isn't a thing.
@BrownmanAli8 жыл бұрын
She doesn't suck. Those are your sarcastic words, not mine. What she is though -- is mediocore. Average. Middle of the road. And she's achieved notoriety by being a blonde woman playing Latin music in an unremarkable, pedestrian way. You like her. You like her story. Good for you. But she's not a gifted Latin trumpet player. She's a "decent" Latin trumpet player at best. To say otherwise simply demonstrates your lack of knowledge of the idiom and the plethora of exceptional, first-rate players there are out there. Here are some examples of great Latin trumpet players you can Google -- Arturo Sandovol (Cuba), Claudio Roditi (Brazil), Diego Urcola (Argentina), Michael Rodriguez (New York), Jerry Gonzalez (Puerto Rico), Bryan Lynch (New York), Alexis Baro (Cuba), Julito Padron (Cuba), Jesus Alemany (Cuba), Gustavo Bergalli (Argentina), Alexander Abreu (Cuba)... That's the tip of the iceberg. I am a fan of this music. I am a student of this music. I am a scholar of this music. And that's some very mediocre trumpet playing. Enjoy her for your own reasons, but you're clearly quite unqualified to argue her mediocrity. My comment stands. And yes, her mediocrity is so pervasive in the face of who's out there doing what she's doing -- only vastly better -- that use of "very" is indeed merited. It's now a thing. What I do appreciate is her ability to market her uninspiring playing ability into a touring career. Like Chris Botti, this is to be applauded as feat of marketing genius. A great many also enjoy Kenny G, having no idea what the standard for soprano saxophone actually is (-> Coltrane). P.S. -- performing on a stage in front of strangers is not an argument against mediocrity, nor is it a feat. It is, in fact, exactly what professional musicians do, so you listing it as a qualifier of ability is laughable. Unless you're impressed by sprinters who can climb stairs. So like what you like. No one's telling you not to. Just know what you're liking. And let's not pretend it's something it's not.
@JazzyJonas8 жыл бұрын
I'm actually a professional trumpet player. I never said she was incredibly amazing like Arturo, Claudio, Brian Lynch etc. I just think she's really good. I think her rather cute story may play into my opinion a bit, but she has great technique and probably sounds even better with a good band in an appropriate environment. You definitely seem to know what you're talking about, though. I'd love to hear you play sometime too. Trumpet love :-)
@dboy504boom38 жыл бұрын
People here who think she is mediocre, or not impressed, are just mad she's making more money than you while doing what you love to do as you are sitting there broke and looking for the next gig to play, while she's touring the world. we can compare her to many greats, buts its not about her playing its about the story she is able tell with her instrument, and expressing it in a way the crowd can feel and understand where she comes from. that's a pointless argument.
@SincerelyMe123 Жыл бұрын
Not a music expert, but that trumpet didn’t sound good. One crack would pass, but she had more, I think? I didn’t think it was remarkable
