I have known Jose for 30+ years. It is with much happiness that I have watched him jump from accomplishment to accomplishment, methodically employing his charisma, perseverance, principles and beliefs to business and to life. Jose's Hayashi San story speaks of the power of a trio of great attributes we as people and our companies should aspire to: Innovation, excellence, and collaborative leadership. Invention is not easy, but it is an end in itself without any real benefit unless we "do" as Hayashi San taught Jose: Invention plus "must do" takes us to innovation. Just like Jose did with Hayashi San, resilience and discipline will make us evolve from ordinary to extraordinary too. Finally, we must be firm believers in that collaborative leadership is more powerful than the leader as just one. This is an excellent message on what it takes to make extraordinary innovation accessible. The message about embracing contractions and seeing the "and" instead of the "ors" really resonated. While it wasn't the main topic of the message, one thing about Jose's personal story about his boss stood out to me. Jose clearly has a deep respect and reverence for his former mentor, but I wonder if his recollection of him would be the same if Jose hadn't had the resilience to push through the tough and challenging feedback and extract the lessons he was trying to teach him. Great leaders empower those who follow them to achieve more than they thought possible. That usually doesn't feel good at the moment, though. When we look back on what we accomplished, we take pride in the accomplishment and have gratitude for the leader who pushed us out of our comfort zone. But at the moment, it's hard. It makes me wonder how often someone told me they had a "toxic" or otherwise "bad" boss who was just trying to push them out of their comfort zone, and they didn't have the resilience to push through and grow from the experience. I don't think Jose would describe his former mentor with the same reverence if he had quit after the initial feedback he got.

Challenges (plenty of that today) always put us under stress. Stress usually narrows our perspective thus leading to polarization (also plenty of that) and stagnation as a result of that. Collaborative leaders are the antidote. They understand that, in a metaphor, red and yellow can produce a new color they couldn't have produced on their own. That's the key to solving new problems in a new way. Jose reminds us of how critical this is today.
