This was a great talk with an important message! We need to bring more attention to environmental issues and talk about people's role in dealing with them. Cooperation is key!!! And that is cooperation at every level including the household level! People tend to think it is only authorities and governmental bodies who need to take action, while it's about time we became more conscious about our water footprint in our everyday life and think about how we can reduce that. We have to start acting responsibly for our and future generations' sake!

My take away--- Water is an infrastructure / commons resource and should be owned and managed collectively not owned and managed individually. Collective long term benefit rather than individual short term benefit. Politically difficult to accomplish. Works for some things: riparian rights, communications, energy distribution, transportation routes (land, ocean, air), ocean fishing.

Interesting as an introduction to a facet of the global water problem, but quite shallow in terms of science. I mean I would have liked to see the results of his models and what kind of insights they provide, how his research evolved after his experience in Africa, or maybe give more examples of conflicts that have been related to water issues (Lesotho/South Africa, Bolivia). It sometimes sounds like he is lecturing the audience...

Thank you Kaveh your talk it is right, water scarcity is a real thing today and will get worse unless humans change right away the way we use it. More than 70% of the available fresh water is consumed by agriculture and food production must be increased many times to supply the growing population. So, if agriculture requires more fresh water there will be less water available to cities. The solution is that agriculture must be discarded as a human activity. Agriculture has been, and it is the single most devastating activity to earth's ecology. I propose hydroculture as an alternative. Hydroculture is the production of food without using soil and one of its most known activities is Hydroponics, Aeroponics, Aquaponics, etc. Let me explain some benefits. One acre of hydroponics vegetables produces the same amount of food as 10 acres in agriculture. Growth cycle is faster for instance it takes for agriculture 90 days to harvest lettuce with hydroponics production takes less than 60 days. Since there is no need for using soil hydroculture can be performed anywhere that is within cities, in desserts, arid lands, etc. No use of pesticides since production is controlled at least no herbicides. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THAT USES 90 to 95% LESS WATER THAN AGRICULTURE. So the impact is that cities will have more supply of fresh water with less pesticides. GAME THEORY!

Cold Steam the efficient way to use the sun geothermal composting rocket stoves any heat source to produce electricity and or distilled water explained from basic concept to employment. Water boils in a vacuum at 75 F or 24 C Two open containers one full of water the other empty connect them at the bottom and water will reach an equilibrium 50 50. If one is sealed except for the connection the other will remain empty because of the vacuum created in the sealed container. Gravity will overcome this vacuum if the containers are taller than 34 feet. If the tanks are 40 feet tall the tanks will reach an equilibrium of water levels at 34 feet leaving six feet of hard vacuum in the sealed tank. This makes a vacuum pump set we need two of them if we were going to distill water as the cold side open tank is used to collect the distilled water from it as the continuous input of water needs to go somewhere. Each sealed tank has four valves three at the top two of those on opposite sides (B&C) one at the very top (D) one at the bottom on the side (A), water-based vacuum pump operations are, Close bottom tank valve A and top tank valve C. Open top tank valve D. Fill sealed tank through top side valve B. Close valve B and D when full. Open bottom valve A. This primes the system to let the warm water in that will vaporize and run through the system when you partially reopen valve B (to control flow rate) and open valve C to its fullest. For only power generation need one pump set and one vacuum tank so we can have a Hot side and a Cold side one to boil the water and one to have the low pressure/vacuum to draw the steam in through the turbine then the cooling coils then to the tank. At the bottom of the cold side, tank is a return pipe with the one way valve to the heat source the one-way valve prevents expansion back to the cold side and as the hot side vacuum chamber is the only outlet for the expanding water and it is drawn by the vacuum the cycle proceeds. You can combine the two and get power generation and distilled water keeping the return line from the power generation system will let you switch if you don't need distilled water on a continuous basis in large quantities. I am going to make one feel free to make one as well it is open source.

And guess what?.How much we store or collect water from rivers, from heavy rains??.Yes, you guess.Almost nothing!!! A simplest way to save water in the world with no cost as follows: Step 1: At a washbasin - Just turn water tap maximum and measure total volume of water in a minute. That’s around 9 liters or more. What on earth is he talking about...water is a cycle, ever replenished, over and over. The oceans are 2/3rds of the earths surface. Desalination of ocean water is the solution to drinking water, and sanitary water solutions. On the other hand I am astonished that we use potable drinking water in the west to spay on our grass. 70% of treated water in some areas of the US is used to water our grass and landscape plants.
