Emilio Justo, MD, unveils the accelerated success code by redefining delayed gratification. Enlightening his audience by sharing the discovery of the untold power of delayed gratification from his perspective as a Cuban refugee’s transformative journey reveals how patience, perseverance, and self-discipline pave the path to extraordinary achievement and unleashed success.
Since 1989, Dr. Emilio Justo has specialized in general ophthalmology and cosmetic surgery. He is renowned for his state-of-the-art refractive cataract surgery and blepharoplasty, having performed over 40,000 such procedures.
Dr. Justo was 1 of 10 out-of-state applicants accepted into the University of Michigan’s prestigious six-year pre-medical/medical program, earning M.D. and B.S. degrees by 23. He began ophthalmology practice in the Phoenix metropolitan area at age 27.
Dr. Justo is a business leader, real estate entrepreneur, public speaker, and avid aficionado of University of Michigan football. He has been married for 20 years with three teenage children. Dr. Justo and his family love traveling the world.
Dr. Justo emigrated to the United States at 3 with his parents, escaping Communist Cuba and searching for freedom and opportunities. Dr. Justo was Valedictorian of his high school and was awarded the Indiana State Good Citizen Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Growing up I was taught to question whether something was a want or a need, and if it wasn't a need I was encouraged to wait a day and see if it was still a want. A little thing but it's stuck with me and I think it works really well!

Choosing to pursue medicine in my mid-20s was an extremely tough choice I had to make, especially since I was about to leave behind a career in engineering and financial comfort for a path that required hard work, discipline, and frugal choices. Now that I am finishing up medical school, I'm starting to feel the gratification and validation that I had made the right choice. It's very evident to me now the difference of being your own master of desire, rather than giving into convenient impulses when going through rough patches in life

Fascinating talk. The idea that delaying our need for instant gratification will prevent us from being slaves to our impulses is profound. It supports his concept that the achievement of our most important goals depends on our willingness to delay and plan rather than living a life that seeks instant gratification in almost everything we do. This is an important issue that I believe needs to be expressed, especially to our youth. Outstanding talk and topic!
