Can you be two things at once? Some would argue for instance, that you can't be both British and Muslim. That these two identities are antithetical. Comedian Tez Ilyas explores if this is true.
Find Tez on @tezilyas Tez Ilyas hit the ground running finding himself in no less than eight competition finals including the prestigious BBC New Comedy Award and Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year in his first year as a stand-up.
In 2015 Ilyas achieved phenomenal success with his debut stand up hour TEZ Talks. A sell-out run at the Soho Theatre and his own Radio 4 series based on the show followed, with a second series coming this year.
In 2016, his highly anticipated follow up show Made in Britain went on to sell out every single performance (including extra shows) at the Edinburgh Fringe and gained spectacular critical acclaim, with a smash hit nationwide tour in 2017.
His third show Teztify once again delivered a spectacularly powerful, provocative and brilliantly funny hour of topical stand up, delivering to packed out audiences night after night. Tez has appeared on The Last Leg (C4), Mock the Week (BBC Two), Live From the BBC (BBC Two), Man Like Mobeen (BBC Three), Kevin Hart’s Live from Montreal (LOL Network), Virtually Famous (E4), The Now Show (BBC Radio 4) and made a brand new quiz show pilot for Vice.
He has also written and starred in his own scripted comedy shorts for BBC Three, BBC iPlayer and Sky Arts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

No we don't we ain't America, most British don't follow a god we see the truth, or most Christians just follow the happiness comfort of not being alone instead of the religion. the prophet of Muslims mohammed married a kid or so it is written, the Christian God committed geneside on the whole world in a huge flood because of some crimes. Who in their right mind needs to follow these. And the reason Britain tries to make it hard for anybody who believes in other god to preach because the land was built on Christianity, the national anthem is 'God save our queen' I respect any person who respects the land and so do alot of people now, there is full Muslim community's that never hit the news because they are good community's. But you guys only pick up on the bad 20 thousand people not the 40million good people that are happy with diversity

When he describes being in service station and other such places, I could really relate. I love being British and British values mean the world to me. But I happen to be Asian and therefore have never fully felt like I belong and mainly because I feel like when I am in the football stadium or the shopping centre, I feel in a very subtle way that I'm different and it's difficult to explain unless you have been in a brown persons shoes. I don't have a massive beard and I wear jeans and all the rest. But I always feel uneasy about going to places where I might be one of the only brown faces. Having said that, British white people are generally amazing.

what you're feeling is quite normal. peoples natural instincts allow them to understand they're not apart of the "tribe" so to speak. I'm an English guy who lived in japan for 10+ years, i learned to speak the language fluently and engaged in the customs and culture of the Japanese people. I always felt like an outsider no matter what; they even had their own subtle ways of letting me know that too. i learned to live with the fact it's human nature to have an in group preference.

Just be happy with diversity we don't wanna bring religion into it that's when wars start. Why can't we all just do good for the people in the community and on the land and mind everyone else's business?

Islamophobic is big, people I grew up with people who grew up eating our food are Islamophobic lol Yes my grandad fought for England, like the millions Muslims who sacrificed their lives, but no one talks about them, almost all charities bank are running in Uk & USA is from the Arab Muslim world, yes we have businesses where we pay 80_90 thousand a year, paying for the free self entitled good for nothing, who is going round terrorising people with racial abuse, how did UK become Rich where did all the money came from? Read the history ignorants, learn to respect individuals & their faith, stop all the hate & live in peace, end of the day we are all from planet earth.

I’m in my early 60s & forty odd years ago I assumed the Asian and white populations of Blackburn would become far more integrated. I’ve worked with Asians & taught young Asians & Whites in Blackburn & it saddens me that two young communities at College have become ever more separate whilst areas of Blackburn have become almost exclusively Asian. It’s not what I wanted to see but as you say it ‘takes two to tango ‘ & the Asian community has made very little effort to move outside of their own communities ; whilst at the same time ‘ white flight’ takes place as locals perceive they are becoming the minority in a given area. I will not begin to deny that overt racism has taken place against Muslims & is deplorable. Likewise after splitting with my Son his partner & my 6 year old Granddaughter moved into a small new social housing development of small 1/2 bedroom townhouses in a predominantly Muslim area. She’s in her late 20s but has a ‘baby face ‘ that could pass for teens . Whilst walking to and fro school and the shops with my granddaughter she is regularly abused by groups of young Asian men as they are unhappy that several single parent families have been homes in+this new development and they point her out as a ‘school age single mum with loose morales’ into although the words are far more graphic and foul than that. I find it even more disturbing that on occasion this abuse is heard by their elders who often mix outside their front doors on early summer evenings & it goes without challenge even though a young child is involved. So, maybe it’s payback time for the abuse Asians have received in the past & proving that sections of each community are capable of behaving just as hatefully as the other . I’ve urged her to move but her attitude is it’s a lovely little house with garden, near school and shops so why should I let morons like that bother me!
