I've listened to this talk so many times I've lost count. Since finding this video, my life hasn't been the same. In fact, everything has changed for me. My work has improved, my studies have improved, projects that I have been putting off for six years will now be finished by Christmas. Even my wife has noticed this change. This talk has been the very key to absolutely everything in my life. Everyone should listen to this again and again and again.

*Summary: Marginal improvement is the key to success* Speaker says that what stands between us and our most ambitious dream is not magical skill or talent but more with how we approach problems and make decisions to solve them. Marginal improvements are the key to be better. Stop becoming a spectator and become an active participant of your actions and decisions. Take big assignments and break them into smaller tasks. Speaker says in college he used to not think of completing 5 chapters but reading 3-4 paras at a time for 5-10 min then do something else for couple minutes and then come back. He was a straight-A student all through college- dean's list. You have to break big goals into smaller achievable goals. The talk includes many personal stories about the speaker's life which I recommend you to watch for yourself. I also found the oratory skills of the speaker to be very good. A must watch video.

"instead of assuming that I would suddenly settle down and focus on learning, I decided to assume I wouldn't. And so if I wanted to achieve the type of outcome that I desired (doing well in school), I was going to have to actually change my approach." That's a great approach. Definitely going to try that. A big reason why I'm such a master procrastinator, I think, is because I'm constantly assuming that I could stop procrastinating anytime I want.

I was working hard but not seeing the positive outcome coming my way. Stephen changed that. He told me that I can and I will get where I want but also gave me the recipe. He told me to change the ladder and gave me the confidence and method to achieve more. He changed me. I'm now running my own business, doing exactly what I want, earning more than ever and not feeling I have a job. More importantly, I'm happy and know how to do more. The Japanese Call it Kaizen, which is to do something that is in congruent with your goals, even if it is just for a minute. This technique changed my life in just a few months. Goals that I failed to hit for years, habits that I failed to break since childhood, I achieved in a span of just 8 months
@ojsympson356 жыл бұрын
@Ayandolos if you set a goal, like let say to loose weight, it will be difficult to be consistent in effort especially when you are not used to excercising. So the way Kaizen works is that you put in effort everyday by being consistent and breaking down the task into something more accommodating to the mind. If you are supposed to run for 1 hr, and you fill tired, or not in the mood, just decide to run for 5 minutes instead. If you get up and run for 5 minutes, you will have manipulated your mind to take the first step, as a result, you might be able to run for maybe 20 to 30 minutes. It eliminates Procastination and laziness. The key is to be consistent no matter what, even in days that you don't feel like doing the difficult task.
@ojsympson356 жыл бұрын
@Ayandolos the secret is consistency, that is more important than putting so much effort in a task but failing to be consistent. Kaizen will get you to be consistent, then you will be able to increase effort and output in time
@ojsympson356 жыл бұрын
@Ayandolos exactly, when you don't feel like doing, just set a goal to do just 1 push up. When you are on the floor and doing just one, you will reignite your momentum and push to even 5 or 7, and that's how you will remain consistent

Just like another reader here I had a BIG million dollar question... how to work on something for 5 minutes, then take a break, NOT get distracted, and return to the task?? I purchased his book that came out a few days ago called AlphaBrain and he explains several concepts in detail. Doing the task is just a small part of the big picture and supposed to be the easiest. He puts in a lot of time before the task in planning and making decisions about what he is going to do and why? That's the toughest part that 95% people just don't do because it's hard to think through that stuff. They start at a task, get distracted and don't complete it. Steve breaks his goal down into tiny little pieces, plans out when, how and why he's going to do it, even planning for when he won't feel like doing it, and how to address that state in advance. Overall, he advises on how to improve the process of making the minute to minute decisions we make in a day and not fall into same old traps. Most of us don't approach problems that way and that's why we fail. I'm still trying to re-read, absorb and implement the advice in his book. I see how it can be life changing.

yah...same doubt arised for me too its worked for him...to not to get distracted and return to work if its not working for us...there is something that worked for us...we have to found that out by observing ourselves in my case...i put a timeslot...i.e.,at 6 am every morning i should do this..like that hope it may be helpful ...

I watched MANY TED talks and felt, yeah thats a good speech, BUT after watching this talk a couple of times (which I just felt compelled to), I literally got up and accomplished nagging projects in a few weeks that I couldn't do in years. Usually I try to finish a task and lose steam especially with an ADHD brain. Now I can put an excited effort for a brief time and keep coming back again an again without feeling like a failure for quitting. I feel competent not weakened because I don't get bored, I can't wait to come back to work. When spending a stretch of time doing something I need to do, distractions are a relief cuz I already lost focus, but now I don't spend enough time to get bored, I get excited to switch back and refocus with intent. It goes against common knowledge that our brain can't focus on more than one thing and it takes time to get your back. BUT if you approach something with complete attention as much as you can give it before you dread it, you will come back cuz you crave not dread to complete it. This is a very different message or advice Ive received for years. I will start with basic goals that need to be accomplished and now seem "almost fun" and hope to go from tasks to dreams. wish me luck

Don't think about the end point, but just follow the system. For example: Don't think about losing the 30lbs. Focus on building the infrastructure to support the healthy lifestyle that puts you at a lower rate. Eat a salad 3x a week, do jumping jacks for 20 minutes straight, drink 4 glasses of water a day. That's it. Then slowly adjust as you it become easier and your habits grow. Great video.

I studied business and worked for one of the largest companies in the world (Fortune 10) and worked for a global consultancy. Working for these companies, I learned the concept of effective problem solving no matter the size of the problem, with this maxim: “How do you eat an elephant?” -one bite at a time. 5:58 - That’s essentially what he is saying here.

Awesome.. Best Line "If you don't make the right decision when you're on the couch, there is no decision that occurs at the top of the mountain."

I didn't got this. Can you explain?
@nivedpalissery19694 жыл бұрын
@@KajalSinghshine Matlab aisa hai ki if we can't make small decisions everyday , then we won't be able to take big decisions in our life.. For eg, Let's say You are feeling lazy and don't feel like studying, but you know you have to study as it will open up more opportunities for you. So if you take that small decision of ignoring your laziness and doing what is needed , you will succeed. Eventually when we become successful in taking small everyday decisions, we develop our personality in such a way that if tomorrow some big tasks come in front of us, we won't hesitate to take action and complete it.

This is the best Ted Talk I've listened to, and I am 38. 2025 will be good!!

This is a great Ted Talk. At 32, I started taking lessons for Tennis and piano. I’m not thinking of the end goal, and just looking to improve marginally at every session and daily practice. With piano, I spend only 15-25 mins a day to practice. Within a month, I completed the primer level book, and it got me excited to learn even more. I am also keeping a track by recording myself from time to time. Amazing how daily habits and marginal improvements can make a big difference

lotusbvby I’ve been letting this play while doing other stuff at the same time, and letting it play once more when going to sleep. I have huge problems with my memory and concentration, and I’m trying to make this technique a part of my lifestyle. It’s been a little over a week now and I’ve watched this probably 30 times 😂😂 Still forgetting it though, but hopefully soon I won’t!!
