I worked in a no kill shelter and his dream shelter is all the things we were. Now I work in a low cost spay and neuter clinic (with wonderful donors who give us funds to cover cost for people who can’t afford the $20 cost). These jobs have been the best and most rewarding jobs in my life. The animals and the people give me purpose. I am grateful everyday for being allowed the privilege of being able to do this work. The animals are our first priority always.

I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Hansen several years ago in a dog training class. He never mentioned who he was, but as I had received the latest magazine from AZ Humane Society, I recognized him. He impressed me from the beginning, and we are so fortunate to have him here in the Phoenix area. Hats off to Dr. Hansen; if anyone can make a difference, he is doing it now.

This Dr should see my FB feed. The horror of county shelters is far from obsolete. Including those in California and Arizona. His dream would be nice, but it is just that a dream, Florida has a ever growing homeless pet population. The lucky ones make it to a shelter and are not dumped on a back county road or bound and drowned. What this county needs is for each county to have a FREE spay and neuter program. Then we may see some changes. AND breeder regulations! NO MORE back yard breeders or puppy mills. Lets pass laws that protect animals!!!

I love this guy and his devotion to our loving fur babies. It breaks my heart to see a dog or cat or... homeless. I have 2 Chihuahuas and I'm borderline neurotic about their welfare. Animals are such a gift. I love this progressive idea that is going to happen throughout the country. Long overdue. I donate to a couple of shelters on a monthly basis. It does the heart good.

Was there a part in Dr. Hansen's talk that I completely missed where he described - in definitive fashion - exactly how the shelter of the future (that he is helping to pioneer) differed from the type that have been in existence for years? I mean, I heard him describe the "glass walled" surgical room/suite, and the dogs outside playing in the yard, and the kittens who were being bottle-fed every two hours by shelter employees and, while that is wonderful, I am not certain that JUST those differences in how shelters are operated would constitute a "huge difference" in the "success" of the new types of shelters as compared to the older style that has been around for years. Either I was not paying close enough attention to him/his talk OR he did not provide enough specifics/details that I needed to better see or understand the whole range of differences between the old style shelter and the new. Maybe I just need to write/e-mail the good doctor for pamphlets/brochures that provide more in depth info, as I would like to let my local "No Kill" Animal Shelter know about anything that might make their shelter one that offers better methods of housing, caring for and rehabilitating the animals that are taken in by them than they currently have or employ.

why do all these problems seem to be in highly populated areas.

Wow...Steven,....as a retired RN from upstate NY....if I could "finish out" making a small $35-40K a year within your progressive shelter for animals...that would be incredible. But alas,...I"m not wealthy...and money doesn't grow on trees. I'd send my resume "tonight" if you had paid "sustainable jobs there sir. Do you? Frank from Upstate NY.

Yay, progressive shelters... and cat cafes, like Denver Cat Company, where folks can meet - and spend quality time - with potential furr-ever companions in a casual cafe setting. (:-)
