The fact that he was one of a handful of drummers to be asked to audition for the job in Dream Theater is an enormous compliment in itself. They are an incredibly technical band. Stepping into the shoes of their (then) departed drummer was the musical equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest. Most drummers would view being *asked* to audition as one of the highest honors of their career.
@SuperballBG4 күн бұрын
The audition was just PR basically. They were going to go with Mangini anyway. Not saying this to take away from any of the drummers that took part in that, they're all great in their own way.

I talked to a guy who is a mathcore drummer and I told him that I struggle with odd things and he said he struggles with linear patterns. I was completely blown away at his response being most music is linear. I thought I was just the majority and he was some sort of music genius, but everyone has strength and weakness. It's more important to learn from each other than to compare ourselves.

I for one am more impressed with people who have a job and responsibilities on top of music, pay for their own gear, lessons, rent, and have an actual life story, faced adversity and overcame it. The greatest music tells a story and is an expression of yourself and your truth, and what story can you tell when you are 10 and aren't a fully developed person yet and all the things you experienced are your mama's house and elementary school? It's more than just notes played accurately at fast speed. Songwriting and improvisation is where adults could truly shine and express themselves. And yeah you can just have fun and just play whatever you like whenever you like, and there are no parents who yell at you behind the scenes and try to use you for views and clout 😅

The discussion about competence/confidence is so true. This year marks almost fifty years of being a “musician” and I was never supported by my family so they kept my confidence low my entire life. When I finally escaped their negativity I was already trained to always feel inadequate so even when my friends and other musicians gave me praise I still, to this day, feel inadequate. I have done thousands of gigs and had some amazing times playing music but even last week, at the age of 57, I played a gig and left feeling like it wasn’t good. As a parent I want my son to be supported and I realize how much damage the negativity my parents instilled into me for life. If you’re a parent don’t do what mine did because they truly sucked as humans!

To top it off he seems like a great guy and easily the coolest teacher you could have. For anyone interested in more of his drumming, he did a phenomenal drum duet with Dirk Verbeuren (another drummer I highly rate) at a Meinl festival in 2013. Pure joy to listen to!

Mr. Wildoer, Not a drummer but have been fascinated with drumming since I was a kid, and even more so as becoming a Progger in 1977, and a Metalhead in 1981-82. And going through all the subgenres invented in my lifetime. I became a fan of yours when finding your debut album with Darkane ("Rusted Angel"). By the time Dream Theater was looking for a drummer to replace Mike Portnoy (co-founder of the band, and a phenomenal drummer and writer), and you were mentioned in the audition for the band, I was very excited for you! I thought YOU would be the perfect drummer to take DT in a new direction to give new life to the band. Virgil Donati & Marco Minnemann were my 2nd and 3rd choices, for the same reason. But I thought you had a sound and technique that DT's vocalist, James LaBrie, thought would be the right fit because of your contributions to his solo albums. I'm sure you are just as happy as us old fans that Portnoy is back with the band he started at the Berklee School of Music . . . but your life-lessons, experiences and being humble helped you to discover what YOU "give" to _others._ And in-turn you receive admiration and respect. This is not just for drummers, musicians . . . but anyone that needs help moving forward with what is in them, that may not be apparent yet, but needed a bit more nurturing and those life-lessons. We fall, we get up and try again, learn from our _habits_ and mistakes to find our "Bliss", and hopefully we are giving something special for those who will reciprocate it, and do the same in their own journey. - Thank you Peter, as an artist/illustrator and fan of various music.

This is really great. I actually worked with a doc on the issue of ability and seeming stagnation. I used to think that mistakes shouldn’t happen but when I opened up to them that’s where I found the jazz in my playing, if that makes sense. Those *mistakes stopped me from gaining the rest of the expression - that’s a big fricken oops.

Thank you, Peter. I am fan of your drumming since the first Darkane album, and also the first Armageddon album. First thing I learnt from this is how to actually say your name properly. I’ve been saying it wrong for over 25 years 😝 You raise a lot of good points. I remember playing shows and walking off stage hanging my head in shame over mistakes I knew I made in the set, but then I would watch a video that got taken that night, and these micro-second mistakes that are corrected so fast actually seem indistinguishable. I think (especially live) don’t hyper focus and dwell on tiny slip ups. In the studio, maybe it’s a different case though 😅
