Joseph is a geographer who believes that mapping and geotechnologies can transform education and society through better decision-making using geography. He served for 22 years as geographer and cartographer at NOAA, the US Census Bureau, and the US Geological Survey. He serves as Education Manager for Esri, where he focuses on GIS-based curriculum development, research in the effectiveness of GIS in education, professional development for educators, communicating the need for geographic skills, tools, and perspectives. Joseph is active in creating and teaching online courses in spatial thinking and geotechnologies. He wrote Interpreting Our World, Spatial Mathematics, The Essentials of the Environment, Tribal GIS, and The GIS Guide to Public Domain Data. He writes for 3 blogs. He has created over 4,000 videos.

Indeed. Geography is about why things occur where they do. Consider cities. With GIS, you can see the relationship between where cities are and what major geographic feature they are located near. For instance, cities like Seattle, San Diego, and New York, are located near or next to oceans. In fact, looking at a map, the Boswash megalopolis is located along the Eastern seaboard, near the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the USA's inland population grew along the Great Lakes region (Chicago, Milwaukee,etc) and large rivers (Cincinnati, Pittsburgh,etc).

As long as we have issues that cover space and time and that change rapidly, such as natural hazards, population change, water, energy, and so on, we will have some form of GIS.. whether it is called GIS or something else, we need a map based system to model changes and plan for a more resilient future.
