Eilona Ariel is a documentary filmmaker whose work was deeply inspired by her life in Asia and her practice of the ancient meditation technique called Vipassana.
She moved to New York City in 1978 and spent nine years studying and working as a musician and a photographer. In 1980, she received a diploma from the Germain School of Photography. She left the USA in 1987 to spend several years living in Asia. In 1995 she returned to Israel and established the Karuna Films Production Company together with Ayelet Menahemi.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Before I undertook 10 days vipassana course, my wife was very critical of me and I was not knowing the reason for her behavior. After I returned completing the course, I noticed a dramatic change in my wife's behavior. She was very cool and composed with me. I then realized that the real change was in me and my habits. I will practice vipassana meditation rest of my life.

How profoundly did the course affect you?
@sumitshresth
@sumitshresth 10 жыл бұрын
Alexander Suraphel well it totally depends on how seroius are you about this course. First and foremost, there is total posibility that you will misunderstand the method as most people do even after repeated attempts in correcting them. The only way is to be very serious about this method and try to get exactly what to follow that method. Second, if you are not focussed then this would not be effective. This is not like drugs or any other stuffs where it will work its way automatic. This is like driving where you have to constantly put your focus because the moment you leave it you never know you will hit somebody
@asliindependent
@asliindependent 10 жыл бұрын
Alexander Suraphel it has been 8 months since I did the course, I would like to list few changes that I observed :- 1 - my anger is in check, it's not that I don't get angry any more it's just that I realize it as soon as the emotion triggers and I am able to get back to normal way earlier than what I used to. 2 - being an artist the feeling of competition, jealousy, anxiety(about the future) were always there, I have been able to get it under control, again I won't say it has gone completely, but there is a significant improvement. 3 - now this might seem to be a small thing but I used to suffer from severe headaches at least 4 times a month and I had to take medicine for it to go away. Since vipassana, the frequency has reduced drastically, and even when headaches do occur I don't take any medicine, all I need is a good 1 hour meditation for it to disappear. Even with the headache, it doesn't distract me from the work that I am doing, for me this is really a huge relief. These are the obvious changes that I've seen, other than this there are so many things which I realize time and again that how differently I am able to handle those situations which used to bother me a lot before. And whatever is lacking is not because of the technique, I have to confess it's because I haven't been able to practice regularly, I've been doing it whenever I am emotionally drained or when I feel a strong need to cut off from the outside world, for those who think 10 days course is difficult, I suggest the real task begins afterwards, strange creature our mind is, even though we know vipassana is so helpful in every way, we'll find it really difficult to get time to do it everyday, I will try to overcome this obstacle. Although I am just a beginner, I would definitely recommend it to everyone, just keep the expectations real and don't believe that any magic will happen overnight to take away all your problems, we have to take those hard steps and keep moving on that path continuously to reap rewards. Vipassana is a tool which will be there for us in the turbulent times, it can not change the outside circumstances, it's there so that we can find the inner strength to face any situation, we don't have to wait for any supernatural power to rescue us. And more importantly it will help us to stay grounded when everything is going our way. "Equanimity" is vipassana's essence, a practical and sure shot way to achieve equanimity in all circumstances.

@@brendadurr5186. Ms. Durr, I just re-read you post of three years ago. My apologies for not reading correctly, and for my rudeness. Okay, I’ve taken the 10-day course myself, twice. The first one in Bombay, now Mumbai, in 1971, directly from master Goenka, lucky me. The course was quite informal in the sense that there weren’t many personal restrictions. We, congregants, could talk to each other during breaks, exchanging ideas of what we were learning. My entire nasal and bucal area, and hands, would feel an expansion, a growth. These areas couldn’t grow any larger, as if the walls of the room were limiting the growth; incredible feeling. After the 10 days, a bunch of us walked to the ocean. Some of us had to look down to see if our feet were actually touching the ground; thinking that we were just floating. I took the course again in 2018 near Pokhara, and it was a disaster. It was extremely regimented where we couldn’t talk at all, not a word, with our fellow meditators. After the course I tried to complain but they wouldn’t want to hear it. Needless to say, I didn’t learn a thing. Why have you been taking the course so many times, haven’t you learned it? I now practice what I think is a more advanced approach to meditation, kundalini. I think I have deciphered some of the symbols within the chakras. I find that those symbols are a simple physical exercise instruction manual, nothing more, nothing less. Cheers.

Chander - Great to know you did push yourself to go through the entire course. I think you might actually be losing the essential message of the whole course when you say that you couldn't find the "bliss". Vipassana is not about reaching out to find something or running away from something you don't like, but just being more and more aware of yourself, your actions and reactions and trying to separate yourself from them in order to break the habit pattern of reacting blindly (unaware). Also, there are various meditations techniques - none of the genuine ones would ever be "easy" if they're effective. It just can't be, if you know what I mean :)

@@theaungkhant. Aung, Gautama never stopped any rebirth because there was never any rebirthing. That concept was conceived by someone’s imagination and became a very successful meme, nothing else. When we die, we die, we just cease to exist, we are caput. The thing that would reincarnate would be a soul, but the concept of the soul is also product of our wandering imagination; it doesn’t exist nor has it ever existed. It’s just that there’s no evidence for it. Gautama, upon his “awakening,” supposedly stopped all belief systems. The concept of rebirth was simply syncretized into Buddhism from the ubiquitous hinduism of that era. I recommend that you rid yourself of any and all belief systems. If I did it, so can anyone.

The course she refers to is a vipassana 10 days (more like 12), it's free in that they request a donation at its end, you can leave anytime you want, ANYTIME you want. Coincident with its value is how hard it is. For 10 days you live as a nun/monk eating 2 vegetarian meals a day, not talking to anyone other than the instructor. The grounds in Ontario, Canada are beautiful, the accommodations humble. I was going to do a solo canoe trip, found this silent "retreat" and stumbled into learning how to mediate. I've not looked back. Although I fall considerable short of the two hours a day they suggest you maintain I still find it enormously beneficial and am looking forward to taking the 10 day course again soon. I'm a psych major, philosophy minor and so was on the look out for cult like characteristics. I spent the first couple days waiting for the catch. I found none and since completing the course no one has called asking for anything.

Mona Kapoor I would say take it easy. Do things are your pace. Dont compare yourself to others and if you ever think you are meditating the wrong way then dont be shy and go ask your teacher during appropriate times. He/She will be super nice and will answer to every question at the best of their knowledge. Everything at the center is organized so that you can have a great course so if anything is stopping you from having a good course then ask the staff or you might waste your time. And last but not least. The course will be difficult. It is for everyone even people who have been meditating for a long time. Dont let difficulty put you down. Take the challenge and I wish you the best. You can do it. :)

I would love to try the Vipassana 10 day course. I did TM through The Meditation Trust in London (Feb 2014). Recommended practice is 20 mins, twice a day. The technique is very simple. I struggled for the first couple of weeks. I cried my heart out and felt very angry. After that it got a lot easier. Now, most days, my body feels like I've been at a wonderful spa. Recently I got angry about something in my head but my body remained utterly relaxed. Amazing. I can't believe how much bliss we have access to, using such a simple technique. I don't know the differences between various meditation methods. I guess you just try and see what works for you. I grew up in a city with a very high crime rate. I was raped, close friends around me murdered, never safe even at home. I moved away but still ten years on I was hyper vigilant and anxious with a short temper. I just would never have imagined I could feel blissful like this. Good luck to all of you xx

I can honestly say that together with assisting the birth of my daughter and meeting my family in Iran for the first time, Vipassana has been among the most valuable experiences of my life. Just as with having a psychedelic experience, this technique enriches the mind in ways you can't possibly imagine before you enter the course; it opens windows of perception. I am forever grateful and wish these simple pragmatic teachings for everyone. With every metta at the end of an hour's session I include thanks to Goenka and all those who passed down the teachings. I will be forever in their debt and I continuously try to pay it forward by informing people about Vipassana and look forward to joining the course again next year as a server.

I taked 10 courses and I am working every day in my house, 1 hour. If you are searching a big chance in your life, you can purify your mind alone. Undertanding the true nature of suffering. I did, and I handle my life better and I am developing true happiness day a day. The results are in the same time that your start. Good life for everyone !!!

I am from Nepal. One of my friends, who is also a computer engineering student, has also taken this course twice. Both times when he returned to the Kathmandu valley from meditation and met me, he told me how powerful it was. He told me how greatly it affected him. At the same time, I had taken a 'Reiki' course somewhere in the valley, and it had also affected me positively. One thing we found in common was we both were able to remember our dreams clearly the next morning we woke up. However, as we both stopped practicing at home, the power of remembering the whole dream weakened over time. I realize this is not good. This video has made me feel I should take Vipassana course as soon as possible.
@Birggittah
@Birggittah 10 жыл бұрын
During the course the mind is very concentraded, focused and probably also when we sleep so i think that's why we are able to remember dreams so well. When we return to real life with so many stimulants, the concentration wears off again, to normal... but... there is just so many better, greater benefits of vipassana :)

For years I questioned why being silent was so frowned upon in American society. I read lots about European and Asian societies that believe in not speaking if there is no necessity; not smiling at others to promote fake emotion or delight; not engaging in fake social interaction; etc. Aside from the social aspect of silence, the spiritual aspect is deep. Being enough for yourself, regarding yourself as the only companion that you are forced to live with all of your life etc. etc. I realized that becoming peaceful with myself and my thoughts and my opinions was the only way I would have a chance at living this life happily. I was finally guided by the universe towards Vipassana meditation and it all makes sense now! I am so happy to incorporate this form of meditation into my daily practice now in hopes of gaining more insight on the power of being silent.

I attended this Vipassana meditation course recently. And I have started practicing on a daily basis at home. and if I were to describe what is this meditation technique, this is how it would be. How the mind-body connection works through body sensations and how our body sensations can be used to connect to the craving/aversion pattern of our mind (and use it to purify our mind eventually) and reach an equanimity state in our living. Enlightenment and liberation both will follow in the long term (in this life, or in more lives), but then, with continued practice, one can progress for sure.

If you are a serious mediator please attend one ten day course to learn the basic technique and you will realize that this is the meditation you need to follow all your life. "All" other techniques at some point come and merge into this one as rivers merge into ocean, so if you have access to ocean why settle for river. Invest just ten days of your life for a life long freedom.

Hope you found a place to learn meditation, there are so many people claiming they understand and giving lessons on meditation but unfortunately only a handful of people ( monks) who have dedicated their life's who has attained vipassana meditative state you will find in the world, in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Burma. if you are seriously looking to practice then you would have to learn it from a monk who practice Therawada meditative practices, in fact meditation practice you can not do without a proper teacher, and it is one to one and you have different stages /attainments before attaining the state of vippassana,

Yeah, you are right about practicing under a Theravada monk. I didn't find any place yet, but there are ten days courses like 2 times a year in my country. I can't go yet because my life became unnecessarily more difficult since I joined university and now I need to finish it. I am currently just meditating one hour a day using the instructions of Yuttadhammo, a Theravada monk from KZbin. I know it's not proper meditation but at least it helps me see impermanence a bit in my thoughts and I'm not as delusional as before(I think ?).

Keep in touch, let me know when you are ready, one thing I will tell you, if it is just part time few hours a day, just to have peaceful time or calm your mind after work, then I suppose 10 day retreats twice a year is fine, however if you are looking for permanent happiness, then it would have to be full time meditation...
