I saw Mayor-elect Nenshi give this presentation live at TEDxCalgary. It was one of the most impressive, educational presentations I've ever seen. I hope he'll be able to inspire our new city council, the city hall organisation, and the citizens of Calgary to build a sustainable 21st-century city.

Watching Naheed an not saying this as another fellow "brown" person he is so relatable actually seems like someone I a 19 year old college student can listen to an not get bored of I hope he wins I am definitely gonna be voting for NENSHI!

Looks like just what we need, a thoughtful, research based, sensible mayor with the good of the whole city in mind. I've seen what happens in places where neighbourhoods are divided by class. The rich spend a large chunk of their wealth on security and the poor live in squalor. You don't have to go too far to see the "gated communities" that result from this. Let's not let Calgary start heading down that road. Nenshi's got my vote!

We need to see beyond into how to unite the city. Naheed is representing us as a people so do not feed false ideas that will divide us. He has worked hard for it and now has an opportunity to make a difference. Wish him well as he wishes us well too.

So organized, eloquent, and meticulous. Clearly there is a reason Ric McIver and Barb Higgins declined to be in a televised debate with the man, because he actually has something substantial to say.

Best Mayor Calgary ever had its a shame that some nobrains disagreed with his commonsensical ideas .He has always been on point . I would always guit clickin channels to hear what this extremely intellectual person would have to say on any level . Calgary if you ever decide to create a legacy fer this Mayor make sure that no shadow covers his greatness . This man is what the whole world needs now . If you look up common and sense and logic you will find this fine mans face posted under all 3 .

He's obviously very intelligent. I actually had him teach me Globalization at Mount Royal University. I have to say that he would be a very good choice for leading Calgary forward on a reasonable and attainable route. I also really like that he wants to decrease poverty worldwide [and in Calgary, of course]. I think this is vital, as even CHILDREN are living in poverty, in fact, 1 out of 6 children in Canada live in poverty. That's embarrassing on a global scale and unethical as humans.

I sincerely hope that Nenshi is able to change Calgary for the better, he sounded like the most researched and thoughtful of all the candidates. Hopefully he'll do an awesome job, and all the rascists and religious regressives will have nothing to say against him.

The reason why there isn't any residential development eastward around the middle is that the area is most sloughs, with land mostly suitable only for warehouses and heavy industry. Have a good look at Google Earth around 50th Ave and 52 St SE. That is where those geese feed, that we see over Galgary as they fly in vees periodically over the summer

It would be great to get a perspective on how the City of Calgary plan is incorporating the 3 D's of a community. Look forward to a 2016 update. As a realtor (you can agree/disagree) Mayor Nenshi provides a platform to have a discussion. While working with a buyer in the N.E. it was interesting to see a cricket pitch instead of a ball diamond in the N.E.

I find it interesting that the mayor of Calgary leaves a closing comment about findinga way to reach those voices that cannot be heard. Then when those voices find a way to reach him, there is an injunction filed against them to remove them from the plaza. I'm not sure I understand how that is an attempt to reach those voices?

Nenshi just gets it. Do we ever need a prime minister like him, Harper, Mulcaire, Trudeau and even Elizabeth certainly DON'T get it. Honest communication and steady citizen engagement is more valuable then just making the right decisions. We need to know above all the reasoning behind the choices our leaders make. Even a decision we don't like would be acceptable if there is a good reason for it. Nenshi knows this, that a leader MUST be an educator. He gives us back agency over our politics.

Excellent video. Only problem with it is that his recreational facility map was only of one kind of facility, which is stand-alone arenas. However, in the NE, where I live, we have lots of arenas, but they're part of mixed-use facilities. There's a leisure centre / wave pool / gym / arena that wasn't on the map. There was a pool / gym / arena that wasn't on the map. And so on. And, frankly, stand-alone arenas are approprate to where rich people live. Hockey is expensive.

@SandwhichDepartment you will be voting in the next election no worries. You can have tremendous influence if you can get others to vote...only about 30% voted in the last municipal election! Even better if you decide to get them to vote for this fellow, the only one in the top 3 arguing over a $3 billion budget who went to university...

there are many ways to cut costs for the average home owner - get rid of existing method of determining home value - property taxes... by lot size regardless of estimated worth of home...1/2 acre or less - 10 %... anything more could be 15%; with the idea that those people are wealthier... get rid of those corporate assessors who poke around our houses and lots and disrupt our peace of mind... I estimate the city could save 10 million a year immediately

@Knight99less Describe what a true Calgarian is. My parents came to Calgary in the 70s and suffered awful discrimination, meanwhile my father was an architect and worked harder than anyone I've met and helped build this city with his own sweat and blood. He is more Calgarian than most who claim to be Calgarian. Yet you think you have more rights just because your family has lived here longer? Immigrants work just as hard to build this city as anyone else. And most don't take it for granted.

In Brazil no one has to stand at a bus stop in -25c for 4 weeks straight every year wondering when a car is going to slide off the road into him. The problem with Calgary is it is a horrible shaped city to begin with for a city built on a plain. Deer foot the roads this city relies on most, is flawed, making much too sharp of turns for its 100km speed limit. County roads with curve: reduce speed 50km. Deerfoot identical curve: reduce speed 5km.

@jsimaluk you're very right, and that is disappointing. Overall though, it doesn't affect the overall point of his message: notice there are still few to no facilities to the upper side of the new red line, and most of the ones that would have been above the original red line, are close to the downtown core and do not venture very far above the original red line. It's too bad he didn't just draw the same line though... would have still supported his argument.

I'm from Calgary originally and have had the chance to live in TO and Van and honestly Calgary is actually very progressive.. It'll take a while for Calgary to shake its rep as a podunk, conservative backwater city - but hopefully people can see past their own judgements and realize that the mayor is was elected by the residents and is representative of the cultural shift in the city. I'm sick of always having to defend Calgary when in Van and TO....all these cities are great in their own way.

Increasing engagement. Occupy in Olympic Park was all about citizens wanting to engage with the community from our own public park. You responded with police state harassment. No, Mayor Nenshi, you did not do a credible job hearing the voices of your community. No access to electricity, water cleaning oneself. No heat'...A complete denial of the most fundamental principles of universal human rights. You talk out of both sides of your mouth, Mayor.

1) You have misused and apostrophe several times in a single sentence. If you want your ideas and opinions to be taken seriously, research the proper use of the apostrophe. 2) Railway is a compound word. Walkway is a compound word. 3) Learn the difference between your (pronoun) and you're (contraction) 4) Do you have spell check activated? You misspelled "tendency". Peter O'toole: "If a man does not know how to say what he means, he will never mean what he says".

I live close to Glenmore Reservoir, between 2 of the richest neighbourhoods in Calgary. I have a fortress mentality - can't stand my neighbours. They're judgmental. I'm white, but I don't make a ton of money, and I don't fit the norm. I would WELCOME a diverse neighbourhood here. Bring it on.

How many screw-ups can you make in a single sentence? How many in a single word? You screwed up TWICE in a single word. In two syllables, you have two mistakes. quote: rail way's, walk way's, road way's ( I am going to presume you missed inserting the apostrophe incorrectly in "road way's"). How can you screw up TWICE in a single two syllable word?.... SEVERAL times... in a single sentence?

LOL. Free electricity and hot showers for people in parks are fundamental human rights? Stop insulting the cause for human rights by associating your irrational demands with real human rights issues. Without a doubt Nenshi himself knew that there's no way to have won the Calgary elections based on the typical campaigning. For anyone who can't connect the two, a minority/muslim mayor and a traditionally white, backwards, population, all it comes down to is the fact that he was able to tap into the dormant youth and immigrant portion of the population. That being said, I'm disgusted at the shit that's being said in the comments. Why is a man's religion the first thing that's seen?

@Knight99less That was not my point. The point is that you are wrongly assuming that Calgary has gotten worse because of people who came "after the fact". Unless you can point to substantial evidence that people who have recently moved here are less likely to positively contribute to this city then I am under no obligation to take your statement as anything more than a biased assumption. If anything, what you are against laziness and this is a societal problem globally.

This is social engineering. LA actually became great city (it's horrible now because of Democrats but that's a different story). The point is, everybody knows LA, nobody knows Curitiba. Also, people tend to live where they fit. I saw these rich neighbourhoods and I'm glad they exist. They're peaceful, beautiful and inspiring. You won't achieve that if you put all kinds of people into the neighbourhood. People are amazed by this speech but I'm not impressed. He's a socialist, plus he doesn't like rich, white people and it shows.
