It does actually make sense that North Korean female defectors wouldn't be the slightest bit submissive. A submissive woman wouldn't leave, she'd stay. She wouldn't necessarily have the strength and courage to risk her life and families lives and brave whatever the rest of the horrors they gotta go through that they don't talk about for freedom.

It is these few women of strength and substance, who have refused to be defined by their brutal beginnings, who will NOW begin to identify patriarchy and power dynamics especially for Asia (and its women - I am one), a region that still openly kowtows to patriarchal norms. It is THEY who will define meaningful ideals for womanhood and feminism - more than ALL the K-pop starlets and their fans in S. Korea combined.
