The education revolution and our global future | David Baker | TEDxFulbright

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Never before in human society have so many individuals dedicated so much time, energy, and resources to becoming educated. The education revolution is irrepressible: but can we understand its dynamics and rise to the challenge of making it a potential major force for positive global change?

I like how Baker's ideas delivers this talk as a contrast perspective to the "negative myths" about education. Those negative myths are valuable for our collective understanding of schooling, in my opinion, but there is always another side to any critique of an institution or an issue that sounds so clear and obvious. And so here we get another side of what is clearly a complex issue. And now I'm left pondering a number of things and questioning some of my own assumptions -- and I guess that's the point of these TED talks. Thanks.

A lot of people are saying that the negative videos aren´t necessarily bad, and that they can be used to make education better. But I think it is important to remind ourselves every once in a while of what good things has education brought us as well. Otherwise we will create mostly negative attitude towards it, and that, ultimately, is what ruins learning in the first place.

"Sir sombody" - seriously - couldn`t look up the name of the most famous talk on TedX on education for your Ted Talk about education? I like your idea and showing the importance of basic education. Thank you. But don`t pretend Sir Ken Robinson would ever not value education. All of those people wanting to change education, just also realize that it could be so much better. We are certainly better off because we got education, but how education still works doesn`t fit to the world we live in and in which our kids will live in.

Although I don't necessarily agree with his overall conclusion, I believe David does have a good point about the way in which education changes the world and people's lives. I think what he was saying in the middle of his speech is that education helps people reach higher potentials, that overall education is making the world a better place and it will continue too. That is why he is saying their is some good about the current education situation of the world. I would have to agree that Education has and does improve lives and the world, although I would add that fantastic education improves peoples lives much more than poor or mediocre education does. This is why we must still do all we can to improve education.

You should have listened to sir ken robbinson more carefully rather than mock him he gave us such a realistic information For our inner developments and he has a deeper thoughts about education..

I think he's under the weird and false assumption that those negative statements about education are somehow against education itself. which of course they aren't. nobody thinks that we should get rid of education. that would be ridiculous. however, the current education system is very much improvable. and I think the negative statements he is referring to are merely pleads to go about improving education, but certainly not abandoning it.

You mentioned Sir Ken Robinson as if he is against education and all.. It seems you were very sarcastic. Education is necessary but don't you think education needs a change from clerical approach to more innovative approach so that it an accumulate more changing working ways

education nowadays is institutionalized and based on western ideas leaving out a couple of important aspects - some teachings may work for 1 thing but not another. education should be more individualized , more global, less classroom like, and should take place in the open or let say in nature in order to see what nature has left for us

Wow, he literally said nothing of substance. He didn't even define the term "education" which he used about a thousand times in this talk. If all education is good does that mean if I am educated to obey nazis and Zeus is that good? This guy is a good example of what is wrong with education it does not teach you how to think logically. First step in communication, define your damn terms.

Was there any new revelations brought out in this talk? No. No kidding, you are better off educated than not educated and that learning things is good for the physical brain. He asked a team of scientist to find out the benefits of education, well, it provided them with a job. Are we really going to waste time comparing the achievements of an educated person to those of an uneducated person? I find that the more educated you are the more money you can make. Duh

This lecture is using terms that build capitalistiic, individualistic, bureaucratic, critical thinkers that is only beneficial for the elite through political marginalisation of the masses through self esteem crashing examinations which is designed to feed the market...and when the market crashes like in covid 19, it proved that the indigenous, without education could survive and the educated citizen simply died because of miseducated, policy driven bureaucrats that could not and were not educated to deal with a crisis that threaten humanity, due to a self interest educational paradigm that focuses on limited careers and no survival skills. So bring paid by capitalist funders speakers like this become tools of mass oppression through social engineered competitive schooling that created the tragedy of covid 19 and all social ills of drug, child, family, corporate, western governmental abuse coated in misleading terms used for this purpose... So called advancement, progress, which came to naught with thousands of useless policies written by wrongly educated individuals...

Oh, I'll think about this guy when someone talks about how dumbed down the country's gotten, no problem. In the meantime, he's not qualified to pick up Ken Robinson's dry cleaning. What a hack! He says absolutely nothing of substance; literally everything he says is nebulous and basically meaningless. When he joked that we shouldn't show the photo of him in Peru to his "funder," I thought, "This guy is paid to do research that will confirm what his funders want it to confirm." Which is to say, bad research. Then they sent him out to do talks that would drive home this conclusion--that education will save the world, and already has--even though he has nothing scientific or substantive to back up the claim. (They should have picked someone less obtuse and more articulate to do their PR campaign.) If I were a singer, I would NEVER cover a Billie Holiday song. And if I were talking about education, no matter what my perspective, I would NEVER get on stage and tell an audience that Ken Robinson had it all wrong (especially if I were a hack). Good grief!
