this is good thanks for post this clip it make me proud to be thai, and about TKD in my opinion it's only big in bangkok if you go out of there you'll find lots of muaythai camps in the country. one more fact muaythai is still one of the most watched sport on TV in Thailand(not sure if it still the first or not since everyone watching european football now)

@Jonth93 Yes, Muay Thai is much more than just the offensive techniques you always see in the ring. The older styles of Muay Thai such as Muay Chaiya contain a wide variety of highly effective defensive techniques, grappling maneuvers, takedowns, and throws. Hip throws included ! "Old" doesn't mean outdated, in this case. These moves can seriously injure, cripple, or even kill a person which is why you don't see them used in competitions.

How is Kru Preang and Muay Chaiya? Is it as amazing as it looks?

Muay Chaiya has root as other arts do, arround early of the 19th.century ..a martial art master from the royal palace in bangkok had moved to the Chaiya town (Surajthani province in present) ,he became a monk afterward and stayed in the temple named "Wat Tuang- jhub -chang" and since that time he passed his art to the local people there....

@smartchai so it is also the case in thailand. in the philippines there are more tae kwon do schools than YAW YAN (some moves are similar to muay thai and engages in full contact matches) and KALI (weapons martial art) training centers. i think the reason is most people dont want to really get hurt while training. they want to have the forms to look like fighters but in reality not strong or skilled enough for true action...as they say "just for show".

The popularity for Taekwondo became national when Thais knew that they can qualify for the Asean , South East Asian , Regional and International or World Olympic recognitions. Whilst Muay Thai is still a popular local spectator sport for many , the decline is quite alarming. But with foreign students and popularity , the camps in Thailand are still running. Muay Boran , Muay Chaiya etc all have been assimilated into Muay Thai. Similar to Taekwondo Hoshinsool self defense.

As seen in the special techniques section of this video ( part ) series , it is quite similar to the Malaysian Martial Arts known quite simply as Pencak Silat. The Black Uniforms. The Belt ranking. And the system of grappling and locks. I believe that Muay Thai Chaiya have or had influenced many Pencak Silat Masters in Northern and Central Malaysia. I would love to learn and pick up Muay Thai Chaiya.

@Jimbei420 I believe he does accept foreign students judging from what I saw on a TV show called, "Human Weapon", which appeared on the History channel. Kru Preang and the art of Muay Thai Chaiya is showcased in one of the episodes. No, you don't need to know generic Muay Boran to start learning Chaiya Boxing. BUT... it would help you learn the techniques and their poetic names faster since there are similarities among the old styles. It's always good to do your own research and compare notes.

Too bad that it's also very difficult to find enough Muay Chaiya schools even in Thailand itself. I can't believe that there are more Tae Kwon Do schools in Bangkok than that of Muay Boran !

A student of Kru Praeng's once told me that Muay Thai Chaiya did not actually originate in the south of Thailand so its origin could not have gone as far back to the days of the ancient malay kingdom and Ayutthaya. I do agree with u both though that being popular in the south it might have had some contacts with some Pencak Silat practitioners.

@MDIS i did some research and i found that Silat Pattani is the oldest form of all Silat Melayu, which i have a reason to believe thats where your Pencak Silat the malaysian martial art is from as well. Since Silat Pattani is originated from thailand it does support what you claim about their similarity. search "CD muay thai chaiya wanarat 1/9 " on youtube.. if you wanna learn more about muay chaiya and if you like it but their cd to support their cause. thanks

my korean friends absolutely fascinated about MT. TKD is more well known in the world and LOOKS cooler but its absolutely usless in a real fight situation. I do MT and converted them all when i prove to them how useless TKD really is. if your doing a martial art because it looks cool then your in it for the wrong reason

*Some facts about Muay Chaiya* The Muay from the city of Chaiya mainly refers to a certain Ajarn Ket Sriyapai. Ket Sriyapai was the son of a governor who was active in sports promotion and brought Muay Veti fighters (Muay Thai) from Chaiya to Bangkok to promote them there. Ajarn Khet never learned Muay Thai himself. The only reason why he is called "Ajarn" is that he has written and published some (fictional) stories about Muay Thai fighters. Ajarn Ket came from a high-ranking family and therefore never fought in a boxing ring. That would have been inappropriate for his standing. His actual profession was civil servant in the building industry. Later Muay Chaiya generations (for example Ket's school friend Tonglor Yalee) mixed normal Muay Thai techniques with Silat (Indonesia), Wushu (China) and Jiu Jitsu (Japan). For these reasons Muay Chaiya, and everything that comes from this direction, can neither be called an old nor a real Thai martial art.
