A word of advice as you approach "The Wall". It's probably their darkest and most complex album. Extremely atmospheric. Try not to get caught up in trying to figure out what it all means first go around. Sit back, take it in, and enjoy the ride.. or should I say, the darkness.

In case you've not noticed yet Floyd had two singers, David Gilmour whom you've heard a lot of so far, and Roger Waters, who sang this song here. Two very distinct voices, once you remember the smooth vocals of say Breathe or Wish You Were Here by David, compared to the maniac vocals that Roger delivers here. Big compliment for your reactions on the three albums: your patience, your spontaneity, your interest in the musical and lyrical background. I 'm pleased with the reaction of the young generation and get to know other ways of approaching. With 14 I had the first contact with Pink Floyd by the TV broadcasting of the Pompeij concert 1972. I was confused and flashed at the same time although I heard ELP and the best 5-member-Genesis. The music couldn't get out of my head anymore. After Dark Side Of The Moon (best musical concept album with unique song bridges and so experimental) I released even that Live songs Echoes and One Of These Days were on the album Meddle 1971 (for me absolutely the starting point of Dark Side). I think it was the UK NME titled PUNK Floyd about Animals: it's musical rawer and first Roger's social vein dominated the lyrics (fragments of Sheep and Dogs were played or developed on the few concerts at the end of 1974 in UK and later 1975, also Shine: an amazing way to compose songs, unfortunately not maintained, what leads to a dismisal, a split and a return). I'm a Pink Floyd music fan, not know much about the biography, but the concert films Pompeij/spec. Echoes and Pulse are fantastic. Have you also done the experience: flashed by a book, then saw the film and must ask you seriously, if the director had he same book. THE WALL (one of the best lyrical concept album, constisting of indivual songs, not to compare with Dark Side): touched me enormously, but the single video and the film were for me too BLACK&WHITE. Later I had'n't recognized that Roger belongs to the post war generation: other UK school system and understanding of society (reasons for PUNK? and BRE...?, haha!?!)..

A line often missed in the first verse is "I've looked over Jordan, And I Have seen" which is a reference to "Swing low sweet chariot" suggesting the sheep are being led to the promised land with the double meaning of going to heaven, "things are not what they seem " as we discover they are being led to the slaughter house", also given the origins of Swing Low Sweet chariot there are other connotations here
@loadedorygun2 жыл бұрын
it’s the revolution of the sheep, my dude! They rose up at the gates of the slaughterhouse and took it to those dogs! After all these years it’s still so hard to wait for that final layered rhythm guitar riff that just peals out freedom for those sheep lol. Run ya, run! May the sheep ever rise.

The Division Bell album is really good. My favourite tracks are 'Coming Back To Life' and 'Keep Talking' featuring the late physicist Stephen Hawking - that last track is a wonderfully constructed piece of music. It's especially performed really well live at their 1994 'Pulse' concert at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London. An absolute 'must-see' show before you leave this planet!
@gypsysteve35762 жыл бұрын
Yep Division Bell is my 2nd fave album of theres (maybe as much as Wish) after Animals. 'Coming back to life' (Studio Version) could possibly be the best song by floyd EVER... but hard to say for sure theres so many good ones. Davids vocal nature is more appealing to me than Rogers. 'Marooned' is a great solo too. Also Davids solo album 'On an Island' is right up there with Division Bell, and 'Blue' is my fave Gilmour solo of all time. That Pitch Shifter sound takes his notes thru the stratosphere.
@ninja_tony Жыл бұрын
@@gypsysteve3576 it’s one of my favorites too. I’ll never understand how anyone can say Division Bell sucks. I get that Roger’s biggest fans a lot of times claim there was no Floyd without him, but I think Division Bell is an extremely solid album and still has all the energy and passion their earlier albums did.
@gypsysteve3576 Жыл бұрын
@@ninja_tony yep agreed. And i see it as the entire collection as just being different phases of floyds evolution. No one is right or wrong, and no album is better or worse. Its all what moves us individually. Some will gravitate more to the vibes of rogers melancholy and anger and political voice ...because the are that way in nature themselves, or going thru hard times where they need to be around that energy to not feel alone in it. Then others will gravitate to daves lighter and mellower nature and flow, for likewise reasons. Then some may be drawn to a little of both, or at different stages in each individuals journey thru life. Everything has its place and purpose. For me division bell (like animals) just feels like it 'flows' more smothly than some other albums. Compared to say DSOTM which feels more disjointed, but i still like it too. Some people love Sids era, but theres only a handful of songs from that era that do anything for me. But those born in the 40s n 50s may love that. Im 60s born so naturally was exposed to 70s till present floyd more. I think alot of reason people dont like 'Division Bell' or 'On an Island' albums is coz (apparently) Polly has her hand in its creativity. But Polly is part of Daves life, so its also his expression of that version of himself. The solos in 'Blue' move me in a different way than other floyd solos do ...its incredibly uplifting (to me). As is 'coming back to life' on the previous album.

One problem with listening to each song separately is you can miss little details which carry on through the album. When you listen to the whole album, listen out for the echoing "stone" which started in Dogs & came back in Sheep. The cool thing about The Wall is, it was made into a movie. Once you listen to the album, you can see the movie, it will give you a great context on the meaning of the album. The songs flow together like Dark Side, it would be best to do a side at a time (there are 4 sides). If you can't do that, at least listen to Another Brick In The Wall part 1, The Happiest Days Of Our Lives and Another Brick In The Wall part 2 in one sitting. Those should not be broken up.

In my opinion the best of the three big songs on Animals, beyond everyone’s favorite ‘Dogs’ - which is still bloody brilliant. Whereas the other two can be accused of some padding in their middle sections - albeit functional - this one’s all business. Great drive and energy, relentlessly galloping towards Gilmour’s glorious guitar-driven climax!
@anahatatutu2 жыл бұрын
I always put the following comment up for reactions to this song: Here is a deeper analysis than I think you will generally read. First, let's get something non-musical out of the way... In the context of the album's cast of human animality, we are all some degree of amalgamation combining the three animals... On to the compositional subtlety and genius of the music itself. Everyone hears the grim tether of fate return as the 'drowning stone' motif from Dogs reappears in Sheep. But this is more than it appears. They drop the stone motif into the water of the musical palette of Sheep where it ripples into an echo - referencing that earlier work from Meddle, and depicting that the fate of the sheep echoes the fate of the dogs. Even further, the chaotic crash and fade at the end of each verse where the voice fades into synth is an adaptation of the motif that first appears in the later section of Saucerful of Secrets where there is a series of buildups - albeit instrumental - that end in chaotic crashes. This idea also occurs instrumentally in "On The Run" from DSOTM. Here is another 400-level Floyd factoid... Although everyone hears the return of the Stone motif, almost no one hears the return of the 'dog-whistle' from the instrumental section of Dogs [HOW APROPOS] It is not conjectured to say that the "Hear Boy" motif is pivotal when it reappears reworked before the recitation of the psalm in the descending diminished chord two-note guitar riff. The point? Dog whistles are covert coercion by the oppressors and are not meant to be heard overtly. These are a few examples of the sophisticated and masterful simplicity and elegance of Pink Floyd's compositional techniques. They are unrivaled in the cohesion of their work.

Before you do 'The Wall' watch the MOVIE "The Wall" ...it will help you understand so much more. After the Wall ide recommend do... 'Division Bell' a later incarnation of PinkFloyd. Then 'On an Island' by David Gilmour ( the guitarist and one of the 2 main singers of Pink Floyd). On that album is the song 'Blue' ...which imo is possibly the best solo from any Pink Floyd or David Gimour albums. The pitch shifting takes his notes up to the stratosphere. Its on a whole other level. Then come back to earlier days and do the album 'Meddle'. By then you would have covered all the best Pink Floyd albums, and personally thats the order ide do them in. "THEN"... watch the whole live concert video 'Pulse'. Other PF and Gilmour albums have good moments too. I just reckon the above listed are the cream.

I'm late to this party - I've been following your reactions for a while and I like your attitude (especially regarding the discovery of great music of decades past. Others have noted that this album is loosely based on the novel Animal Farm, but I haven't seen anyone explain the concept clearly. This is Roger Waters' commentary on life in early 1770's Britain (but much of the symbolism is relevant today). The dogs are big business, the pigs are the government, and the sheep are the citizens being screwed over by both. I could go deeper into the analysis, but this should generally explain the lyrics. Just keep exploring, and enjoying, the miracle that was/is Pink Floyd. No band has ever made such stunning expositions of the human condition, and taken listeners on so many amazing sonic journeys....they will never be equaled. The term "rabbit hole", when used to describe an artist's catalog is insufficient here - Pink Floyd is a mine shaft, very deep, with countless side tunnels to explore (drop some bread crumbs so you don't lose your way). Rejoice in the fact that their music will live on far longer than we do, bringing joy and wonder to future generation.

OK, so. Allegedly 'Animals' was inspired by Orwell's Animal Farm, which was an allegory about the animals taking over the farm (Orwell intended it as an anti-communist narrative), it bears reading, even today. The album 'Animals' analyses the various animals in a contemporary perspective: The dogs are the people who control the world, who are always looking over their shoulders for the next person vying to take their place. The pigs are those that try to manipulate society for their own purposes, to keep society under control for their own gain. Businesses looking for evermore profit, or those looking to control the status quo. The 'Mary' referred to is in fact Mary Whitehouse, who in the 1970's tried to enforce quite extreme censorship of the media including television and film. The sheep, I hate to say it, are you and me. We are destined to follow the dogs and pigs and be lead to the slaughter in the name of business profit and international diplomacy. Now replay the album and follow the lyrics. Hmmmmmm.

You got to be careful when catching media you haven't heard before that presents ideas of conspiracy and danger, particularly when it seems deep and meaningful. Now, I agree with Roger Waters' politics fairly thoroughly, but you can just as easily get caught up in the crap the other sides are selling (yes, there are •always• more than two sides) and that can become just as authentic and meaningful to you. Just remember, the level of feeling and certainty that someone has while talking or singing or dancing or acting or writing or conducting business has no bearing at all on the truth of what they're saying. It only relates to how much they believe what they're saying, or just as likely, how much they want you to believe it, regardless of whether it's true or false. (This is a very adult and cynical explanation, I know) Just remember to keep reading and always consider the likelihood that you could be wrong, about whatever point of view you've adopted. And be especially careful about points of view you've been given by those you trust, before you've had the ability to give much meaningful thought to it.

THE BOX "THE BOX" is an idea I had to fight the diabolical system of power that plagues us. I thought of this: power has enormous economic and human resources, uses extremely complex psychological tactics and above all uses lies in all its forms on a global level; So I thought that what can defeat it is something extremely cheap and simple that spreads truth and awareness: I thought of a box containing cards with the names of dozens and dozens of independent journalists, independent historians, independent doctors independent historians, independent doctors, independent psychologists, independent thinkers, etc... The idea is that once the box is opened, people, students, will search for these names and discover the truth for themselves. and discover for themselves the truths that are hidden from us. This box would be produced economically and distributed wherever possible. If it worked in Italy, the idea could be copied in every country in the world. On the lid should be written: "THE BOX".
