Gilmour was not flashy yet seemed to place every note, every bend, every pinch harmonic, in the perfect place. Many guitarists would do too much, but David Gilmour did just enough at just the right time. My personal guitar inspiration and playing style is thick with Gilmour. And yes, Poles Apart should give anyone with a heart goosebumps, masterpiece.

Just one man’s opinion, but having seen Floyd live multiple times and have all vinyl, it’s unclear to me why there’s so many who believe this album to somehow be substandard Floyd or unimpressive. This and Momentary Lapse are both top shelf all day long, with highly listenable compositions. David and Rick shine. 🤘😎

This was always a strong Floyd album for me. It certainly was missing a key Floyd element without Roger, but beyond that it was beautiful and well-written and produced, and seemed honest and not trying to be something it wasn't - it wasn't reaching, it was natural. It was one of only two of their albums that wasn't marred by bad songs imo.

Justin I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. This is a beautiful and rich production of great compositions. Btw, what was the other album you praised. Was it Dark Side(or should we just put that one out of reach?) for if not I thought of Momentary Lapse as the other. It’s funny, I was 13 when Dark Side was released, have seen every album tour, and yet have NO favorite. Must be the consistency of a very high bar they set for themselves, with perhaps a rare few other groups able to do the same. Anyway, just curious. Regards

@@ronaldelliott4373 I'm surprised this comment wasn't downvoted, it's a pretty controversial thing to say about Floyd's albums. The other "perfect" album of theirs for me, is Animals. Like I said, there are no bad songs. Unfortunately for me, the same can't be said for DSOTM, or even my favourite WYWH, although that one's close. Welcome to the Machine is too ugly in the midst of all the magestic beauty of that album. Although I suppose that was the point, given the topic. It's nice to see an old school fan such as yourself (no offense) hold two non-Waters albums in such high regard though. I didn't get into Floyd until The Division Bell era, so I have a different relationship to their older material than some.

@@justinatest9456 Indeed. First time I ever saw pigs fly that night. The Animals show I caught was somewhat experimental for the time, as it was amped through the P.A. in quad sound. I also agree with your comments about Welcome To The Machine. It was unique for the times but hasn’t held up as the rest of the album does. Here’s something on KZbin from Roger I love. It’s Pig’s (in 3 parts) live 2016, Roger Waters Tour in Mexico City. It’s a feast for the senses and a sarcastic nod as well. If you get a chance, let me know what you think. I love MLOR, it's still premiere Floyd to me. This improved on the the trios formula. Gets better with every listen too. You stay away for a while and come back to it and it's slightly more magnificent than the last listen.

I believe this song was their goodbye to their old band mate Roger Waters. David talks about the past, Richard gets the first solo on keyboards (Roger fired him before quitting the band).. then there's thoughts of childhood at the circus, but the boys remember walking that tightrope around Roger. And they conclude with "we're still going, you're the one that's faded out. Since this was written, Roger has mellowed and rejuvenated his career. They even reunited for one night. But I feel David may have forgiven, but he doesn't forget. Very reserved with Roger. Almost cold.

FYI - the crackling noises at the very beginning are (I have read) actually sounds of the earth's crust cracking.

Cool seeing someone your age discovering "our" music (I'm 74). Too bad you never had the opportunity to see them live. Truly an unforgettable experience. This album came out about the same time as their last tour and was a good part of the Pulse concert, which I saw all 3 shows when they came to the Oakland Coliseum. You really need to watch the entire Pulse concert.

Woohooo! Thank you for doing this one Silas. Im so happy for you to experience this album. Its a lighter album than much of their previous stuff ...not as dark. And thats whats so refreshing. My favourite Song by PF 'Coming back to Life' will be on Part 2. It starts lonely, but then lifts into hope. I love that its a positive message, compared to alot of their darker stuff, (especially The Wall). And Coming back to life is such a deeply emotional vibe too. Enjoy Silas. And thanks again for not skipping over this album. Its in my Top3 fave PF albums, along with 'Animals' and 'Wish', and only just before 'Dark Side'. David Gilmours solo album 'On an Island' is (definately) worth coming back to. My fave guitar solo of Davids; 'Blue' is on that album.

It's rather hard to find a bad song on any Floyd album! I mean some people have opinions about some of the songs on their final cut album. Some people don't like anything beyond their debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn and are some songs on their early albums when they were doing a lot of experimenting that some people don't like. But even with that said it's still hard to find bad songs on a Floyd album!!

This was definitely the best post-Waters Floyd album and best since the Wall. My only critique would be I would have liked more Rick Wright, but that's just nitpicking. It was really great to have Rick back in the fold playing and writing. I would suggest listening to Rick's solo album, Broken China, which came out following this. Anyway, I love Cluster One, because it features David and Rick speaking to each other musically, much like in Echoes. Keep Talking, Coming Back to Life, Lost for Words, Wearing the Inside Out, and High Hopes are just great songs. But really, I love this entire album. I don't understand why people like MLOR over this album. I rank it as maybe one of my top 5 or 6 Floyd albums all time. And that's coming from a huge Roger fan, as well. Just my opinion!

This album would have been stronger if they had incorporated more of Rick’s parts that later ended up on Endless River. They were definitely going in a more ambient direction at some point in the recording process which for whatever reason they abandoned in the end.

@@mikewatts867 Endless River is a nice companion piece to the Division Bell, much like the Final Cut is more of a companion piece to the Wall. Just leftover stuff, but some interesting stuff to listen to. It's sad they didn't revisit the Endless River material while Rick was still alive. I also wished they left Louder than Words an instrumental. I hate the lyrics on that song or least ask Roger if he could have written some lyrics to sum up the band's career. They were actually on speaking terms at the time. "We bitch and we fight/Dis each other on sight." Those are horrible lyrics for the Floyd's swan song. High Hopes would have been a more satisfying end to the band.

I could be totally wrong, and I accept that. I always thought this was a goodbye album for David towards Roger Waters. Didn’t really factor in Syd. The title,The Division Bell, gave me the sense that he was telling Roger I tried so hard to mend fences, but you just told me to bugger off. This album gave birth to the Pulse tour, which I am happy to say I was able to see the concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. I love your reactions Silas. That’s how you feel music from the heart.👏👍

A lot of bands would have signed a deal with the devil to produce an album like this. But A Momentary Lapse of Reason stands higher in my personal rank, because it was less self-congratulatory and manneristic. It was louder and more energetic, while this is more like a pre-retirement record. A lot of fantastic songs here, anyway.

Even though this is their last album proper. There is still early Floyd, which is a bit different, but also some solo albums by Roger and David to discover. Since you are a fan of David's voice and guitar it is certainly worth it to check it out at some point. Check Gilmour's song: In Any Tongue (Pompeii version) for a taste of his solo work.

Hey Silas great. Since summer 1994 - I was so in love in a person near the fantastic Atlantic coast by Bordeaux - I never heard the whole album again. Cluster One means: slow down, relax and brace yourself, then follow two so different high quality songs, specially Poles Apart still blows my mind. Thank you Black Rose for you info (musically I have often different opinions); I'ill get me behind the text/what he said about Syd and Roger/his wife Polly Simpson was co-author on the most tracks. I'm looking forward to the next two parts and wait for them. But I swear no later than saturday I'll go to the beach and listen to this commercial but so atmospheric album to the fullest, surely a few times next week, I happen to be in Tuscany right now - the right music for the right time. Rick has several parts (co-composer) and moments, e.g. in Poles Apart + in the next Marooned - Grammy 1995/best instrumental ,,,,

Gilmour riffs are unequalled bro! The Division Bell album was released in 1994, the Pulse Concert at Earls Court, London, is part of The Division Bell world tour. March 3rd to October 29th, 1994, 112 shows worldwide. 59 shows in 33 cities in the United States,... Compare that to The Wall world tour in 1980, which had only 18 shows worldwide, only 12 in North America and 6 in London. The 12 total concert dates in the U.S. were only in 2 cities,... 7 in California and 5 in Uniondale Long Island, NY. I was at the February 25th show at The Coliseum in Uniondale NY

What do you want from me always sounded to me like David took 'Raise my Rent' off his self titled album and came back to it with 20 extra years of experience almost as if to say this is an idea I had then, this is what I can do with it now. Polly Samson is a great lyrics writer - just different to Roger. The line "I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes", which is totally about Syd, basically an updated "now there's a look in your eye, like black holes in the sky." Apparently (per the band in various TV documentaries), that was the sign for them he'd gone mentally, his eyes were dull and lifeless.

A decent album and in my opinion a big improvement on the awful 80's production of Momentary Lapse, which I feel ruined some very decent songwriting. The only problem I have with this album is the song configuration, which comes across as disjointed. Because of this, I tried messing around with the configuration on Spotify and came up with a listing that I feel really flows much better. 1. Cluster One 2. Keep Talking 3. Take it Back 4. Marooned 5. A Great Day For Freedom 6. Lost For Words 7. What Do You Want From Me 8. Coming Back To Life 9. Poles Apart 10. Wearing The Inside Out 11. High Hopes. It would be interesting to know if anyone prefers this configuration, or absolutely hates it. Just my personal preference on how I like to listen to the album.

I don't understand all those complaints about the '80 production. It sound old and plastified, true. But it was the way to make music in that time, and numerous rock bands made excellent use of it (we think of all the hard rock / hair metal movement). Pink Floyd simply embraced it, like they embraced the punk vibes in "Animals", the disco in "Another Brick in The Wall part II". It is not Floyd fault if that sound today is not welcomed by some integralists.

@@andreabindolini7452 Fair enough. On a personal level I just felt that the whole 80's sound wasn't representative of Pink Floyd. I'd hardly say that Another Brick in the Wall can be classed as "Disco" music, even if it does loosely use that type of production in the song. The same goes for Animals, which is inspired by punk but also not a direct punk album. There's still elements of the Floyd sound in both those records, whereas Momentary Lapse is a complete change of style.

So one level of interpretation here as I may have said a few days ago comes from the album title. Which is a Parliamentary term process, so you can interpret on some level the music being about ruling / governing. "what do you want from me? " is almost about electioneering and promises, Poles Apart even the name has a political suggestion, and hints at setting somebody up for a fall in order to succeed them its no coincidence that it has the phrase "Hey You..." which is of course from The Wall, its no suprise this album was released after the Berlin wall and the Iron curtain came down and reunification of Germany was going on, this is the another level of meaning of Division Bell (Germany being a country divided in two after world war II, and a bell tolling the end) I visited Germany after the wall came down and visited east and west and Poles apart is a good description of the 2 halves of the country in terms of wealth and standard of living.

The keyboard you hear is a Hammond Organ, or more specifically a b3Hammond Organ. The b3hammond was one of their most popular models & was used by Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Genesis, Deep Purple & so many other artists, it would be easier to mention the ones that 'didn't' have a Hammond - b3.

You have not done The Final Cut yet. It came after The Wall and though it is very much a Roger Waters album it is worth listening to m, more alike the Wall. I personally really like The Final Cut. It has several dramatic songs

14:31 dont know if im trippin or something,,,,no my friend, your not trippin,,,you are "FLOYDIN" , as it should be, i am a kid of the 60s, so my introduction to the floyd was meddle and dark side, and i have followed faithfully every since,,it has been a complete joy for me to be able to watch you (a youngster and a floyd virgin) being totally turned on by this incredible band , an album at a time, its not good to cherry pick song from floyd albums until after you have heard and digested their albums in full before cherry picking, they are not even a band or a genre , they are a Phenomenon, they dont sound like ANYBODY, nor does anybody sound like them, they are a creative force all of their own, a lot of bands cover their stuff but there will NEVER be another floyd, they are the ones who pioneered so much in recording etc, most of the cool shit today learned from the floyd,, and the mega concerts/stadium rock was invented by them, the beatles and a few others,

The Division Bell is by far Pink Floyds worst album ever, it makes me cringe listening to it, so middle of the road. You should listen to The Endless River which was recorded at the same time, it is a far superior album.

But I have listened to it only 2-3 times and likely won't anymore. The Division Bell is a decent album. I would much rather listen to it compared to The Final Cut/Moan.

@@flubblert it seems to me as a great album, The Division Bell, I am very into it, if you're referring to me, but it's not the worst of Pink Floyd, for a person(me) who's more into thrash metal to get into Pink Floyd says a lot about this album and most of the classics from Floyd's.
