This isn't even their song. It's a cover from a 1920s German Opera. There's another verse that they chose not to include because they felt it gave the wrong impression of why they were a musical group. It says, "Show Me The Way To The Next Little Dollar"

The odd instrument you are hearing on The Alabama Song is called a "marxophone." It's a small zither-like instrument with strings but has a sound similar to a mandolin. It involves strumming the strings as well as playing strips (like keys) that operate hammers on the strings. As to the song itself, the Alabama Song originated in Germany, which sounds a bit odd of course. It was written in the 1920s and translated to a sort of broken English at the time. Berthold Brecht wrote the lyrics and Kurt Weill composed the music. It was part of a play called "Little Mahagonny" produced in 1927, and the character singing the song is a "working girl" if you take my meaning. That second verse lyric, "Show me the way to the next little girl" was changed by Jim Morrison for the Doors version. Originally, given the play's character of a female call girl, she was calling for "the next little boy," as in her next customer. In 1930, a full opera by Brecht and Weill was produced as "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" in which the Alabama Song was also used. Even in the largely German language work, the song was always done in the broken English. Last note, Brecht and Weill also wrote the famous "Mack the Knife" that Bobby Darin made so famous with his jazz style recording, very different from it's original version in The Threepenny Opera. If you haven't heard Darin's Mack the Knife, I recommend that added to your list.

After "Light My Fire" began to take off, The Doors were booked to appear on "The Ed Sullivan Show", a popular television variety series that, in some ways, broke Elvis, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones in America. CBS Network executives were concerned about the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher", as there was rampant paranoia at the time about anything that might be construed as a reference to drug use. In a meeting with producers before the show, the band agreed to change it to something generic, like "Girl, we couldn't get much better"...The show goes on, Jim gets to the line, and not only sings the original, but stares straight into the camera, emphasizes the offending word by singing it louder and more pronounced, and yells immediately afterwards. People lost their shit, and the band was forever banned from ever appearing on "Ed Sullivan" again, maybe even CBS...Heh...

When Jim says the lines of "we must find a little girl" in Alabama song or "them little girls understand" in back door man, he's saying that through expression he isn't referring to minors lol. He's expressively referring to just women with an "innocent" connotation to them by calling them little girls. It does catch people off guard when they first hear those lines though

Jim Morrison was a rebel, poet and philosopher, possibly all together and unpredictable, partly on stage too incl. scandal. If you interested see OLIVER STONE's film 1991 with Val Kilmer as Jim; supported by band members Robby and John, heavily criticized by Ray (lack of authenticity). English Wikipedia: "Alabama Song" was written and composed by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill in 1927, for their opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny).The melody is changed and the verse beginning "Show me the way to the next little dollar" is omitted. On the album version, Morrison altered the second verse from "Show us the way to the next pretty boy" to "Show me the way to the next little girl", but on the 1967 Live at the Matrix recording, he sings the original "next pretty boy". The album version says all, as they played it live. The 3:11-single version was US no.1; the first Doors song I heard as child (in Middle Europa). Back Door Man is a cover written by 2 blues singers+guitarits Willie Dixon+Chester Burnett, The Doors often played it live.

Alabama Song was written in the 1930's by the German film maker Kurt Weill, sung & made famous by his wife Lotte Lenya. He was Jewish & needed to escape the Nazis so he came to the USA & started working in Hollywood. The music always made me envision a kind of circus of sin.

FWIW, Morrison's poetry/Lyrics are a Very Very Raw expression of mostly Male Human Nature. An exploration of thoughts and possibilities whether actually realized or just thought about. Constantly pushing the limits of what is "Acceptable" and more importantly the Consequences of certain actions which are expressed with both delight and sarcasm within the same song. So, The question is "What is True Freedom" How far can I go ? "Are there Limits" ? and "Are There Consequences" ? Is that Freedom ?

Light My Fire was a monster hit in 1967. Krieger's guitar solo uses different intervals than you often get on a rock solo, and the verse progression is also very interesting. The initial figure is based on the circle of fifths.

Let's not try to sanitize the great Jim Morrison. When he sang 'Little girl", he meant little girl. Not a five year old, give me a break, but it was the sixties, the pill, the Summer of Love. What do you think that meant? I sang "Alabama Song" in a play written in 1927 by German Playwright Bertolt Brecht before I knew who the Doors were. It's supposed to be sung by a whore in a bar, but we sang it as a bunch of soldiers. There are a lot more verses. After 'little girl' there is little boy and even little goat. Morrison would have known that as did my director and me. I heard this album for the first time at the cast party. I also found out that Jim had recently died. Long Live Jim!!. And the REAL, original Jim, not an updated version.

Don't worry too much about the "little gals" stuff. Times have changed, yes, but in those days "girls" in their late teens or early twens could be referred to as "little girl" or even "little child" (Beatles) without deliberately wanting to challenge the age of consent. On the Beatles' debut album, Paul McCartney (20 at the time) starts off with "Well she was just seventeen, and you know what I mean...". No one was worried one bit about that back then.

Little girl doesn’t refer to an underage girl in this case. You might notice Led Zeppelin used that term in “since I’ve been loving you” and The Ramones said it in “I wanna be your boyfriend”. It’s probably very foreign to someone as young as you. Just wanted to clear that up since your reaction was quite a disturbed one :) also this song wasn’t even written by The Doors.

@@Grithron2 It's not. It's an old gritty blues cover. Alabama Song was a cover of a of a German inter-war song in which the "little girls," was exchanged for the opposite and it wasn't a euphemism.

@@Grithron2 Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Morrison was singing this as an old blues man in context with the original song. The "little girls," are the children of the woman he is two-timing with. Sure "little girl," was a common come on in the late 60's to mid 70's but not in this song.

Hay Sil I think instead of starting with Second Helping u ought to start with Pronounced . Always start with there 1st album. Pronounced is bad ass. There's 4 classic songs off that album that's played on classic rock stations even today. Do it right bro.
