Hey Silas from Ned in Spain ! So great to see you getting into the incredible Who and their groundbreaking Rock opera Tommy. It wasn't the first, that was the Pretty Things " SF Sorrow " album, but it was the most famous and influential. There are not many guitar solos if any on this and a whole lot of acoustic playing. The lead instruments are really the bass, John Entwistle and drums by Loony Keith Moon. If you wanna hear the guitar of Pete Townshend cut loose and melt some faces, along with the rest of the Who, you MUST like MUST hear Live at Leeds and Who's Next. Those are essential. Trust me....

Just reminder the entire album is a continuing STORY of a deaf, dumb and blind kid. It's the first rock opera. "Quadrophenia" is another rock opera by The Who, a bit more harder rock. Each had a movie, too. The visuals of "Tommy" are amazing! You should watch it!

Since you're enjoying Keith Moon on the drums as much as you are, you really need to watch a live video and see him / them in action.

Great reaction, Silas! The big short well-known athems are yet to come in the next parts. With Tommy& Quadraphenia/normal- lenght-songs you will discover the pioneer side of rock opera (I think: first by The Pretty Think, hippie-opera, not a commercial success). For ME: The Who opened the doors for many hardrock bands of the 70ies with Who's Next (briliant) and Live At Leeds. Roger Daltrey is the predecessor of Robert Plant and Ian Gillian. On Tommy he sounds very harmless and seriously produced; but he has a fantastic "rock tube" (what can be guessed at Eyesight). Pete is an unique guitar devil in any aspects till be a destroyer, Keith is devil monkey drummer and John keeps the overview and the group together. I guarantee: on your Who journey you will notice this and be surprised several times. In the 60ies some bands (Black Night of Deep Purple, Honky Tonk Woman of RS, Join Together Of Who ...) did not release every single on an album: separated both. The Who had many hits e.g. the unforgettable I Can't Explain, My Generation.................. Have fun!!!

Keith Moon was a completely crazy guy but a great drummer. He made the drums a real, equal instrument and no longer just a clock. He was even sometimes placed at the front of the band at concerts.

"Live at Hull" (recorded the day after "Live at Leeds") includes a live performance of most of "Tommy" - just 1 bassist 1 drummer and 1 guitarist making as much glorious noise as those instruments possibly can. "Tommy" was actually played after "A Quick one ...", and before "Summertime Blues", but the CD format meant that "Tommy" was kept together as CD 2. The entire performance is extraordinary and well worth listening to 🎧

The Live at Leeds version is pretty good too, but Is a great example of the Electrified live Who. Tanglewood 1970.

@@Ben-sq6un I have a deluxe version of "Live at Leeds", which includes "Tommy", but Spotify doesn't, which is one of two reasons that I recommended "Live at Hull". The other reason is that I always assumed that the problems with the bass recording at Hull would make the recording lame to say the least, but actually it sounds great and I thought that a few of Silas' followers might discover the album and enjoy it 🎧

The thing about the who is you had Pete Townsend who wrote most of their music (all of Tommy) and played mostly rhythm guitar but also laid down some killer lead solos. Then you had lead singer Roger Daltrey and John Entwhistle who played what could be called "lead bass" - he seriously carried the melody in some songs on bass. Then there was Keith Moon who was said to play lead drums. He often tried to play all the parts on drums giving the Who its unique sound. Townsend was not afraid to give all the glory to the other band members with his guitar in the background. Really a one of a kind lineup.

Individually speaking, the 4 members of The Who are top 5 in my opinion in their respective roles. Roger Daltrey is one of the greatest front men in history and has one of the greatest vocal ranges in rock n roll. Keith Moon in drums is simply ridiculous! John Eintwistle's bass tone/bass lines and stage presence is up there with the greatest bassists. And Pete Townshend while he isn't a "guitar solo" guitarist has written some of the most important riffs and most unique chord progressions in rock music and definitely has that guitar hero thing about him. Together they are up there with the greatest to ever do it!

You should check out their performance on the Smothers Brothers show. They put an explosive charge in Keiths bass drum, but it didn't go off during rehearsal. They put in another one for the show without removing the other, and Keith decided to put in another for a bigger bang. They all went off during the show, which caused Pete's hearing loss and injured Rogers arm.

The great Keith Moon on drums. Unfortunately he died in 1978. The Who went on, but they definitely lost some of that magic after Keith's passing.

The way my dad told me about Keith Moon joining the Who was they had another drummer while having another name which i think was the detours (they also for a short time went by the high numbers when trying a bit more of a jazz or blues sound) but Keith told the band that he could out drum their current drummer. Keith proved that he could and btw he was 16 when he joined. At least again that was the story my dad told me. Not sure how accurate it was but his obsession with the band was why i grew up listening to them so much.

Maybe difficult to quite appreciate how different this seemed at the time. The whole concept of the “rock opera”, stretching a single coherent narrative across a double album, was new. Townshend (a bona fide genius) repeated the trick later with Quadrophenia; and Who’s Next, which many regard as their best album, was what remained of an even more ambitious effort that didn’t quite come to fruition. Very few bands showed as much growth in the course of their development as The Who, though they were never quite the same after Keith Moon’s premature death. His drums and Entwistle’s bass were a unique combination.

Not much in the way of guitar solos in Tommy; though, there is alot going on in the background. It is much more drum driven. I'm sure that is intentional. MUCH more guitar in the preceeding Who records as well as the following ones. Tommy is all about the story and the song structure and less about screaming guitars

You won't hear a lot of guitar solos from Pete Townsend because he doesn't do that many, much like you won't hear a lot of drum solos from Keith Moon for the same reason, because he just isn't good enough to do them, despite being considered one of the "best drummers in the world." (which of course is always very subjective) At least this is my experience listening/ watching one solo that he did.
