Interesting fact, the band was going in two different directions at this point in time. They could not agree on the sound moving forward for u2. Bono said that this point in time was the closest they came to splitting up. Then one night in the recording studio, the guitarist - The Edge - showed the rest of the band the riff he had been working on (the gentle one you hear at 4:25). It united the band together, and they have never looked back.

THANK YOU. So many people miss this simple statement. Most lyricist would say "We've got to carry each other" but Bono distinctly emphases how it an an honor to do so. As a closet empathist this song cuts deep

I've read "One" is a very popular song played at weddings. But... It's a breakup song. U2 did a version of this with Mary J Blige and it is also awesome. Thanks for making me smile again Silas.

When Johnny Cash asked U2 if he could record this song, they actually helped out in the recording studio. It really is a beautiful rendition.
@AnthonyL0401 Жыл бұрын
I would not call this simply a breakup song. This is a song about damaged people and the toxic strain they put on other people when they try to manipulate others to quell their own pain.
@redshift83028 ай бұрын
@@AnthonyL0401 According to Bono this was written when the band was on the point of breaking up and this was actually a song to help the band members realise that they needed each other.

Excellent reaction video to a spectacularly brilliant song, my friend. I would humbly recommend a generally lesser known gem - U2's *Please,* off of one of U2's most underrated yet greatest albums ever released; U2's PoP, alongside their hugely magnificent "PoPMart" tour.

I love your approach to these reactions Silas - new subscriber! Keep it going with the U2 journey. They were one of the most important and influential bands of the 80s, 90s, 2000s and beyond. Unmistakable vocals, innovative guitar sound, and bold lyrics that challenged the human condition on all levels and strongly advocated for social justice and equality across the globe. Their live performances are epic. They made a big splash at 1985's Live Aid with their performance of "Bad" (a must listen!). They also documented their 1987 Joshua Tree tour and released it as a full-length feature film called "Rattle and Hum" which was shown at movie theatres across the country. They've never been satisfied with status quo and have changed with the times which helped with their longevity. A lot to explore with this super-group.

A lot of people think that this is a love song, but it's not. At the time that U2 were writing the Achtung Baby album in 1991, the were on the verge of breaking up. They were constantly fighting with each other, going in different directions. Thus song is a song about breaking up, about betrayal. Which is why it baffles Bono why anybody would play it their wedding (which many people choose to do). You gotta check out U2 - One live at Slane Castle, one of the best live performances of the song ever.

This is one of the best albums of the century, Achtung Baby. It was recorded in Germany, hence the name. Every song is nearly as powerful as this one, although this is probably the best. The preceding album, The Joshua Tree, is a close 2nd IMHO. You should review them both.

Liked their songs but became a true fan after seeing them on the zoo tv tour in the Astrodome. My older brother and his friend had a ticket. Let Kravitz opened. I got scalped tickets when they added shows to the tour that included the then “Summit” (later known as the “Compaq Center”, currently Lakewood Church). I think Public Enemy opened on that one…the openers may be reversed…I old now…lol. To get a good feel for U2 (phases 1 and 2) checkout the movie Rattle and Hum. Prolly can’t do a reaction to it as I’ve never seen a reaction to it…it has a lot of good live performance footage. The accompanying album of the same name it a U2 staple.

I think you've heard 2 of U2's 3 profound relationship-technical life wisdoms.❤ That's missing the lesser-known, recent UK No. 1 hit "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" (Bono dedicated to his father). Now you will soon have to discover a new side of U2. P.S. Do you know that from September 29th U2 will inaugurate the visually fantastic new building The Sphere in Las Vegas, with the main focus on the album Achtung Baby 1991, played on the legendary ZOO TV tour back then. Honestly, I don't really know, what I should think of it.

We all got our own interpretations, but for me, "With or Without You" is for when you're a teenager and are suffering from unrequited love. "One" is for when you're in your twenties and are no longer putting your partner, or yourself, on a pedestal - a realistic song for adults in a relationship that is dying.

JoshuaTree is a great album to react to but if you want to see were it all started the album Boy is what you should listen to, even if you do it on your own and not on the channel. U2 has very different sides to them. Try Newyearsday, The Unforgettable Fire (about the hiroshima bomb), Angel of Harlem, Sunday bloody sunday (about northern Ireland). They have so much more. But start with these. You will understand why they are the biggest rockband in the world since the 80s. I like Summer of love as well. Its very recent. These guys are a treasure. Grew up with them and were my childhood heroes. Been to 3 concerts of them. Out of this world.

I came to U2 late - did not buy an album until Joshua Tree came out. That album is a sonic delight. But some friends held that album in disdain, saying that U2 had "sold out". I disagree. If a band does not change and grow with new concepts, they get boring. U2 has huge catalogue, quite a deep rabbit hole to explore. Should clarify, in the mid-80's it was CDs (compact discs), not vinyl albums per se. I love CDs compared to vinyl and cassettes.
